Do not guess a medicine or dose from a generic guide: age, current weight, health, treatment history, and the product label all matter. The 13 steps below explain how to prepare, treat under veterinary direction, and follow up.
13 steps to deworm a puppy safely
-
Arrange a veterinary appointment
Ask the clinic to review your puppy’s age, current weight, health, and parasite-control history. Bring any adoption, breeder, or clinic records you have. Puppies can carry intestinal parasites without looking sick, and roundworms or hookworms may pass from mother to puppy. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) explains that pets may appear healthy while carrying intestinal parasites.

Get the previous treatment record
Ask the breeder, shelter, rescue, or prior veterinarian for the dates and names of any deworming products used. Do not repeat an unknown treatment just because the puppy’s history is incomplete; give the clinic what you know and let the veterinarian decide what is appropriate.

Report signs that concern you
Tell the veterinarian about diarrhea, weight loss, a dull coat, excessive scooting, coughing, or worms you have seen. These signs do not identify the parasite on their own. Contact a veterinarian promptly if the puppy is very young, ill, or has severe or persistent symptoms.

-
Ask whether to bring a stool sample
Follow the clinic’s instructions for collecting and storing a sample. Fecal testing can help detect parasites, though an early or low-level infection may need further assessment. The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) recommends testing at least four times during a puppy’s first year; your veterinarian can set timing based on health, exposure, and history.
-
Find out which parasite is suspected or confirmed
Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms are different parasites, and one dewormer does not treat them all. Coccidia and Giardia are single-celled parasites rather than worms, so a standard worming medicine may not treat them. Ask the clinic what the test suggests and what the selected medicine covers.
-
Confirm age and current weight
Have the clinic confirm both before treatment. A puppy’s dose and eligibility depend on its weight, age, health, and the precise product and formulation. Never estimate a dose, use a product intended for another animal, or assume that different brands or forms have interchangeable directions.

-
Ask the veterinarian to select the treatment
The choice should match the parasite and the puppy’s circumstances. CAPC lists several approved agents for canine ascarids, including pyrantel pamoate, but that does not make it a universal dewormer or the right choice for every puppy. Ask what the medicine treats and whether additional treatment or testing is needed.
-
Use only the directions for the selected product
Follow the veterinarian’s instructions and the exact product label for route, amount, and timing. If the label and instructions seem inconsistent, or you are unsure how to give the medicine, contact the clinic before administering it rather than adapting directions from another formulation.
-
Clarify whether treatment must be repeated
CAPC’s 2025 general guidance recommends starting puppy anthelmintic treatment at 2 weeks of age and repeating it every 2 weeks until regular broad-spectrum parasite control begins. This is professional guidance, not an individualized prescription; ask the veterinarian how it applies to your puppy and what schedule to follow.

Keep the follow-up testing appointment
Keep any recommended fecal recheck or other follow-up, even if the puppy seems well. CAPC’s recommendation of at least four fecal examinations in the first year is a general baseline; the veterinarian should tailor timing to the puppy’s health, exposure, and history.
-
Remove feces promptly and wash hands
Pick up stool promptly, dispose of it safely, and wash your hands afterward. Keep children away from contaminated soil and reduce contact with feces. Some intestinal parasites can pose risks to people as well as animals, as AVMA’s overview of intestinal parasites explains.

Set an ongoing prevention plan
Ask your veterinarian about year-round broad-spectrum parasite control and a testing schedule suited to your puppy. Prevention and fecal testing complement one another: a prevention product does not remove the need for the clinic to assess exposure, symptoms, or possible infection.
What the schedule does—and does not—tell you
CAPC’s recommendations provide a general framework: begin anthelmintic treatment at 2 weeks of age, repeat every 2 weeks until regular broad-spectrum control begins, and perform at least four fecal examinations in the first year. The guidance does not tell you which medicine or dose an individual puppy should receive. Those decisions depend on veterinary assessment and the exact label. The guidance is U.S.-oriented; drug approvals and labels may differ elsewhere.
