To drink more water, make safe water easy to reach and easy to choose: carry a reusable bottle, serve water with meals, and choose it instead of a sugary drink when that fits your needs. These are practical suggestions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), not guaranteed ways to change behavior or a prescription for a fixed daily amount. Access and safety matter too: a habit is harder to build when water is unavailable, unreliable, or unsafe.

Why is drinking water more than a personal habit?

Water intake depends partly on the choices people make, but also on whether safe water is available when they need it. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a safely managed drinking-water service as one that comes from an improved source on the premises, is available when needed, and is free from faecal and priority chemical contamination. In 2022, 73% of the global population—about 6 billion people—used such services. At least 1.7 billion people used a drinking-water source contaminated with faeces that year, according to WHO’s 2023 reporting.

Those figures describe different realities: some people need a convenient reminder or routine, while others face a basic access or safety problem. A bottle may help someone carry water to a meeting; it cannot repair an unreliable supply or make a contaminated source safe. WHO’s guidance on domestic water quantity also considers how accessibility, reliability, continuity, and price shape the amount of water households can use.

That distinction helps identify the real obstacle. Before adding a new habit, consider whether water is easy to obtain at home, work, school, and while travelling; whether the source is considered safe locally; and whether another drink is the default at meals or when eating out.

How can I drink more water during the day?

Start with a small change that solves a specific inconvenience. CDC’s practical suggestions include carrying a reusable water bottle, choosing water with meals or when eating out, and adding a wedge of lemon or lime if that makes water more appealing.

Make water available where you make choices

  • Carry water when portability is the problem. A reusable bottle can keep water within reach during a commute, class, or workday. It is an optional convenience, not a requirement or a guarantee of higher intake.
  • Put water into an existing routine. Serve it at meals, or make it one of the choices you consider when ordering food. Pairing water with a regular event makes the choice easier to remember without relying on a complicated tracking system.
  • Change the default beverage when appropriate. When you would otherwise choose a sugary drink, consider water instead. This is a way to change the beverage choice, not a claim that every drink has the same role or that everyone must avoid other beverages.
  • Adjust the taste if plain water is unappealing. CDC suggests adding lemon or lime. Treat this as a flavor preference; it does not address whether the water source is safe.

Choose one action that fits the barrier

Barrier Practical action What it addresses
Water is not nearby when you want it Carry a reusable bottle Portability and convenience
There is no dependable option at a fixed location Improve access to a maintained fountain, dispenser, or refill station Availability at that setting
A sugary drink is the usual choice Choose water with a meal or when eating out Choice among beverages
You are unsure about a water source Check local utility or public-health guidance and follow advice for the identified hazard Source safety, not convenience

These actions address different problems; they are not interchangeable products or a ranked list of methods. CDC presents them as practical suggestions, and the cited guidance does not establish that any single bottle, reminder, or flavor addition creates a lasting habit.

How do I make drinking water a habit without setting a universal target?

Build a routine around access and regular moments of choice rather than assuming that one daily volume suits everyone. The CDC guidance says water needs vary by age, sex, pregnancy, activity, and breastfeeding, and may rise with hot weather, physical activity, fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. It does not provide one universal daily target for every person.

  1. Notice when water is least convenient. Think through the day: Is water missing at the desk, during travel, at meals, or in a shared space? Identify one setting rather than trying to overhaul every routine at once.
  2. Match the change to the obstacle. If water is available but not in reach, carrying a bottle may help. If the problem is a lack of a reliable refill point, a bottle alone will not resolve it; access at that location is the relevant issue.
  3. Attach the choice to a routine you already have. For example, serve water with a meal or consider it when ordering food. These are CDC suggestions; they are not a promise that a particular cue will work for everyone.
  4. Reassess when circumstances change. Heat, activity, illness, pregnancy, or breastfeeding can affect needs. If you have a medical condition or questions about what is appropriate for you, get individualized advice from a qualified health professional rather than treating a general habit tip as personal medical guidance.

Children’s water habits are also shaped by their surroundings. A CDC page citing studies reported that one in five children and adolescents did not drink any plain water during the day, and that about half of school-aged children were underhydrated. The underlying studies were Rosinger, Bethancourt, and Francis (2019) for plain-water intake, and Kenney, Long, Cradock, and Gortmaker (2015) for inadequate hydration. These findings describe populations; they do not set a target for an individual child.

Is water a better choice than soda?

When you are choosing between water and a sugary drink, CDC recommends choosing water as a practical way to opt for a healthier drink. The point is the choice at that moment—not a claim that every person’s overall diet, health needs, or beverage options are identical.

Make the substitution easiest where the choice happens. At home, serving water with meals puts it on the table. When eating out, consider water while deciding what to order. If plain water is less appealing, CDC’s suggestion to add lemon or lime offers a simple flavor variation. None of these steps should be confused with water treatment: flavor does not establish that a source is safe.

How can schools help students drink more water?

Schools can make water easier to choose by providing clean, maintained fountains, dispensers, or hydration stations and allowing students to carry bottles where school rules permit. These are access measures: a reminder to drink cannot substitute for a functioning, available source.

Make access dependable during the school day

  • Keep fountains and dispensers clean and maintained so students can use them.
  • Consider whether refill access is practical in the places and parts of the day when students need it.
  • Set clear rules about carrying and refilling bottles so students know when and where they may use them.
  • For participating meal programs, make water available during the meal service specified by CDC guidance. This requirement applies to those programs and meal-service settings; it should not be generalized beyond them without checking the applicable rules.

Separate access from plumbing safety

A fountain can be available yet still require attention to water quality. CDC notes that contamination, including lead, can occur in school plumbing after water leaves the water main. Schools should follow local authority guidance on water safety and any identified plumbing concern; a clean-looking fixture alone does not establish that water is safe.

For families, the useful question is not simply whether a school has a fountain, but whether students can access it and whether the school or relevant local authority has addressed any water-quality concerns. Safety decisions depend on location and conditions, so avoid assuming that all school taps—or all household taps—are either safe or unsafe.

How do I know whether my water source is safe?

Convenience and safety are separate questions. WHO advises people to drink from a safe source. Whether a particular tap or other source is safe depends on local conditions, so consult the local water utility or public-health authority when you have a concern or receive an advisory.

WHO describes boiling, filtering, chlorine, and solar disinfection as possible measures when needed. They are not interchangeable guarantees: the appropriate measure depends on the hazard and the guidance for that situation. A generic filter should not be assumed to remove every contaminant, and adding flavor to water does not make an unsafe source safe.

In schools, plumbing can introduce a concern such as lead after water has left the main. For household or school questions, use local guidance about the specific source and hazard rather than relying on a broad claim about tap water. When an authority gives instructions for a local concern, follow those instructions.

Which change should I make first?

Begin with the cause of the missed opportunity, not with a universal daily number. If water is safe and nearby but easy to overlook, attach it to a meal or carry it with you. If there is no reliable way to get water at a location, focus on access. If safety is uncertain, resolve that question with local guidance before treating convenience as the main issue.

  • Convenience problem: make water portable or place it where a routine happens.
  • Choice problem: consider water at meals or when eating out, particularly when the alternative is a sugary drink.
  • Access problem: address the availability and reliability of a fountain, dispenser, or household supply.
  • Safety problem: identify the local concern and follow advice from the utility or public-health authority.

WHO’s public-health framing is useful here: sufficient household water for drinking, food preparation, and hygiene supports health and well-being. That makes water access more than an individual willpower question—and explains why the most useful first step can differ from one person or setting to another.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is bottled water automatically safer than tap water?

Not automatically. Safety depends on the source and local conditions, so use guidance from your water utility or public-health authority rather than assuming that one type of water is always safer.

Does adding lemon or lime make unsafe water safe to drink?

No. Lemon or lime is a CDC-suggested flavor addition, not a disinfection or treatment method. Use water from a safe source and follow local advice if there is a water-quality concern.

What should I do if local officials issue a water advisory?

Follow the instructions issued for your location and the specific advisory, and check with the local utility or public-health authority if you are unsure whether your source is affected. A general hydration tip cannot replace local safety instructions.
