For most healthy adult cats, start with a measured daily ration divided into two or more small meals. The right amount depends on the individual cat—not a universal number of cups—so use the food label as a starting point and work with your veterinarian to set and adjust portions.
How much should I feed my cat?
There is no single serving size or calorie target that fits every cat. Calorie needs vary with age, reproductive status, body and muscle condition, activity, health, and weight goals; foods also differ in calories per cup. A feeding guide on the package can help you begin, but it cannot account for all of those differences.

Ask your veterinary team to determine a daily calorie target for your cat. Then use the food’s calorie information to measure the corresponding daily amount. Track your cat’s weight and body condition and review the ration with your veterinarian as needs change. VCA notes that the veterinarian is the best source for nutrition recommendations specific to an individual cat: VCA, “Feeding Your Young Adult Cat”.
How many times a day should I feed my cat?
For young adult cats, VCA describes two or three measured meals a day as a practical schedule. FelineVMA recommends dividing the daily allowance into multiple small meals across the 24-hour period. These approaches share the important point: measure the full daily ration first, then split it into portions that suit your cat and household.

How should kittens be fed?
Kittens are growing, have small stomachs, and generally need several small meals. Feed food formulated for growth until growth is complete, typically around 12 months, according to VCA’s kitten feeding guidance.

How to manage feeding in a multi-cat home
When cats compete, avoid, or guard food, provide separate feeding stations with distance and visual separation. Make sure each cat can reach its own food and observe individual intake. A shared bowl makes it difficult to know which cat ate how much.
How should treats fit into the daily amount?
VCA advises that treats make up no more than 10% of a cat’s daily calories. To avoid adding treat calories on top of the ration, use part of the cat’s measured food allotment as treats. See VCA’s guidance on feeding treats to cats.

When should you review the feeding plan?
Recheck portions when your cat’s weight or body condition changes, activity shifts, health needs change, or a veterinarian recommends a different goal. For an inactive cat, do not simply cut the current ration without veterinary guidance: reducing food inappropriately can create nutritional deficiencies. Regular weight checks alongside portion control help you and your veterinary team make informed adjustments.
