For most backyard flocks, the simplest reliable method is to offer a complete commercial ration matched to each bird’s age and purpose, alongside clean water. Use scratch grains and scraps only as limited extras, and treat pasture as a supplement—not a replacement for balanced feed.
What should I feed my chickens?
Choose a complete chicken feed labeled for the birds’ life stage and purpose. A complete ration is formulated to supply the nutrients birds need when fed as directed; Alabama Cooperative Extension describes complete feeds, with clean water, as designed to be the sole nutrient source. Start with the feed label, because age ranges and formulations can vary by product.
| Birds | Typical feed choice | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Pullets intended to become layers, through 6 weeks | Chick starter | UF/IFAS gives 20–24% protein as its guidance for commercial starter through six weeks. University of Florida IFAS Extension. |
| Layer pullets, 6 to 18 weeks | Grower feed | UF/IFAS gives 16–20% protein from six to 18 weeks. University of Florida IFAS Extension. |
| Laying hens, from about 18 weeks | Layer feed | UF/IFAS describes layer feed as containing approximately 3.5–4.0% calcium; use it for birds intended for laying, not immature chicks or pullets. University of Florida IFAS Extension. |
| Meat birds | Stage-specific broiler ration | Broilers have distinct starter, grower and finisher needs. Follow meat-bird feed labels and guidance rather than applying a layer-hen schedule. Alabama Cooperative Extension System. |
The high calcium level in layer feed is not appropriate for young birds, which need substantially less. UF/IFAS notes that birds under 18 weeks need about 1% calcium; feeding layer feed too early can cause harm. If chicks received a coccidiosis vaccine, check with the label and a poultry professional before choosing medicated starter: UF/IFAS cautions that medicated feed counteracts the live vaccine.
Which feeding method should I use?
| Method | When it fits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Complete commercial ration | The default for most backyard flocks | Match the ration to age and purpose; keep it available as directed and avoid feeding layer ration to immature birds. |
| Mash, crumble or pellet | Different physical forms of complete feed | Maryland Extension notes that crumbles and pellets can reduce selective eating and feed waste, but cost more to process than mash. Check that the form works with your birds and feeder. University of Maryland Extension. |
| Complete feed plus controlled grain | A managed system for owners who can control grain quantity and keep enough complete ration available | Grain is lower in protein, minerals and vitamins; too much can dilute the diet and cause deficiencies. This is not the same as unrestricted scratch feeding. Alabama Cooperative Extension System. |
| Home-mixed ration | Owners able to source ingredients and formulate to birds’ requirements | Ingredient nutrient content varies. Colorado State Extension advises confirming ingredient content and meeting age- and purpose-specific requirements; casual ingredient mixing is not a dependable substitute for complete feed. Colorado State University Extension. |
Can chickens eat scratch grains every day?
Scratch grains—usually cracked, rolled or whole grain—can encourage scratching behavior, but they are not a complete diet. Feeding too much can displace nutritionally balanced feed. Oregon State Extension suggests limiting scratch to roughly 10–15% of daily food consumption, or to what the flock eats in about 20 minutes. Treat those as practical rules of thumb, not a universal prescription; appetite and conditions vary. Oregon State University Extension Service.

Scraps and other treats
Keep treats modest. Colorado State Extension advises that treats make up no more than 10% of the daily diet, and that scraps should not be moldy or salty. Its avoid list includes avocado skins and pits, undercooked or dried beans, onions and rhubarb. When you are unsure whether a food is suitable, leave it out and ask a poultry veterinarian or extension service. Colorado State University Extension.
Can chickens live on pasture?
Foraging can provide grasses and insects, but the amount varies with forage quality and breed. Maryland Extension estimates grazing may supply 5–20% of feed requirements under varying conditions. Keep a complete ration in the feeding plan rather than assuming pasture alone balances the diet. University of Maryland Extension.

Do chickens need grit?
Grit and calcium serve different purposes. Insoluble grit—small, hard particles retained in the gizzard—helps grind whole grains and less digestible forage. Calcium is used to form eggshells. Birds eating whole grain, scratch or substantial forage may need access to grit; birds eating highly digestible commercial ground feed may need little or none. Chickens with access to suitable ground may pick up small stones themselves. University of Maryland Extension.
Do laying hens need oyster shell?
Not necessarily. A complete layer ration may already provide adequate calcium, so extra oyster shell is not automatically required. Alabama Extension says a high-quality complete layer diet may make supplemental calcium unnecessary; Oregon State suggests eggshell quality is one factor to consider when deciding whether separate oyster shell may help. Follow the ration label and consult an extension service or poultry veterinarian if shell problems persist. Alabama Cooperative Extension System; Oregon State University Extension Service.

How should I provide water and store feed?
Offer clean, fresh water every day. Oregon State’s laying-hen guidance reports water intake at two to three times feed intake by weight and says birds drink more in warm weather; this is guidance for laying hens, not a precise universal intake for every bird or climate. Oregon State University Extension Service.
Keep feed clean, dry and protected from rodents. Maryland Extension recommends covered containers or pallets and cautions that bags placed directly on concrete can absorb moisture. University of Maryland Extension.
