1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart with a cat food labeled complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage, then compare how much your cat needs each day—not just the price on the bag or can. Dry food is generally less expensive than canned food, according to Cornell, but a low package price is only useful if the food is nutritionally appropriate, your cat will eat it, and the portion fits your cat’s needs.
Choose nutrition before comparing prices
Look for a nutritional adequacy statement showing that the food is complete and balanced for the relevant life stage. AAFCO explains that “complete” means the food contains all required nutrients, while “balanced” means those nutrients are present in the correct ratios. A product intended only as a treat or supplemental food is not a substitute for a complete diet.
Life stage matters: a food’s claim should fit whether your cat is a kitten, adult, or in another life stage identified on the label. AAFCO’s guidance on selecting pet food explains what to look for. If your cat has a condition that requires a modified diet, ask your veterinarian before switching to a less expensive food.
Compare the cost of the portion your cat will eat
Cornell describes dry food as relatively inexpensive and canned food as generally the most expensive format. But package prices are not directly comparable: foods differ in calorie density, palatability, and digestibility, so a cat may need different amounts of different foods. Cornell notes that canned cat food contains at least 75 percent water.

Use the calorie statement and feeding directions on each package to estimate the daily amount, then compare the cost of that amount. AAFCO says calorie statements provide kcal per kilogram and a familiar measure such as a can or cup. Feeding directions are a starting point, not a personalized prescription; an individual cat may need an adjustment. AAFCO’s label-reading guidance explains these figures.
- Check that both foods are complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage.
- Use kcal per kilogram and kcal per can or cup, together with the feeding directions, to estimate the portion.
- Compare the amount your cat actually needs rather than bag, box, or can prices alone.
- Consider whether your cat accepts the food and whether you can store it safely after opening.
There is no universal cheapest brand or reliable budget figure that applies to every cat. Prices and product formulas can change, and the appropriate daily portion depends on the cat and the food.

Make portions and feeding habits work for your budget
Measure food instead of guessing
Measure each serving and keep an eye on your cat’s body condition. Overfeeding can contribute to weight problems; too little food or an unsuitable diet can also put health at risk. Ask your veterinarian for an appropriate daily target if you are unsure how much to feed.
Keep treats within a small share of the diet
Cornell’s rule of thumb is to keep treats to 10 to 15 percent of a cat’s daily calories. Treats should not displace the complete food that provides the cat’s regular nutrition.

Choose a feeding routine the cat can manage
Cornell says most adult cats can be fed one or two meals a day, while feeding frequency depends on age, health, and preference. Some cats may overeat when dry food is left out continuously, so free-feeding is not a good fit for every cat. Kittens, pregnant or nursing cats, cats losing weight, and cats with health concerns need individualized feeding advice.
Store food properly and avoid false savings
Storage affects whether an affordable food remains usable. Cornell advises keeping dry food cool and dry, ideally in an airtight container, and refrigerating unused canned food after opening. Choose a format and package size you can store safely and use before it spoils.

Do not add supplements without veterinary advice
When a cat eats a complete and balanced diet, routine supplements are usually unnecessary and can be harmful. Add one only if your veterinarian recommends it.
Do not assume homemade food will cost less overall
Homemade cat food is difficult to formulate with the right nutrients in the right amounts and proportions. A recipe that appears inexpensive may not provide a suitable diet. Cornell discusses the formulation challenge in its cat-feeding guidance, and the ASPCA notes that suitable commercial food may be more cost-effective in its advice on cutting pet-care costs.

When a lower-cost switch needs a veterinarian’s input
Do not replace a prescribed therapeutic diet based only on price. Some diseases require modified nutrition, and a general maintenance food may not meet that need. Check with your veterinarian before changing a therapeutic diet or making a major change for a kitten, a pregnant or nursing cat, or a cat that is losing weight. Cornell’s guidance on how often to feed a cat also notes that age, health, and preference affect feeding decisions.
If the cost of food makes it difficult to feed your cat adequately, look for animal-welfare organizations or pet food assistance resources in your area. Availability and eligibility vary by location.
