Ask about experience with Bernese Mountain Dogs or other large, long double-coated breeds, their handling and facilities, and exactly how they would care for your dog’s coat. A Berner generally needs regular brushing and conservative trimming—not routine shaving.
Where to look for a Bernese Mountain Dog groomer
Ask friends, family, your veterinarian, or other Berner owners for local referrals. You can also search the American Kennel Club’s groomer-finding guidance and directory options. Treat a referral or directory listing as a starting point, not proof of breed-specific skill: talk with the groomer and, if possible, see the salon before scheduling.
Availability, prices, appointment length, and included services depend on the area and business. Confirm those details directly rather than relying on a generic estimate.
Questions to ask before booking
Use the same questions with each candidate so you can compare their answers. Look for clear explanations tailored to your dog, not just a reassuring claim that they groom all breeds.
#1 Best Overall
- ROUNDED PIN : The long tooth undercoat rake brush has smooth rounded pins that make it easier for pets to accept grooming. The 0.94 foot long steel teeth of the rake penetrate deep into the dog's hair to remove loose fur and remove all mats, tangles and knots. Long tooth undercoat dog rake brush Not suitable for cats, puppies or short-haired pets.
- NON-SLIP HANDLE : This large dog grooming comb has an ergonomic non-slip handle, and a rubber non-slip pad allows you to optimally control the pet's brushing tool, so you can brush your pet's long or short hair easily.
- REDUCE FLOATING HAIR : Got to brush regularly for 5 minutes to easily remove dead hair so it doesn't fly off. Your pet can reduce shedding by up to 90%. Your sofas, carpets and sweaters will be hair-free!
- EASY TO USE : Placing the large brush on the skin is important because the massaging action helps to relax and remove dandruff. First, gently trim the back and tail, taking care not to hurt the eyes or ears. Make the brush go down the dog's neck. If your dog has long hair (feathers) on the back of the legs, brush it through as it tends to get tangled. Finally, brush lightly over the soft belly to remove any remaining emanations.
- STRONG & STURDY : This pet shedding grooming brush is made of durable and rust-resistant stainless steel, so getting it wet won't break it.
- Relevant experience: “How often do you groom Bernese Mountain Dogs or other large, long double-coated dogs?” Breed experience is useful, but no directory listing or client count alone guarantees competence.
- Coat-care plan: “How would you handle seasonal shedding and the thick undercoat? What would you trim, and what would you leave natural?”
- Clipping: “Do you expect to shave or clip a substantial part of the coat? If so, why?” Ask for the reason and the expected outcome before agreeing.
- Training: “What training, mentoring, or continuing education have you had? Are you familiar with the breed’s coat and appropriate trim?”
- Handling: “How do you handle a large dog that needs a break?” Confirm that the groomer can safely accommodate your dog and explain their comfort approach.
- Facilities and products: “May I see the bathing and grooming area? What products and services do you use?” Ask about cleanliness, ventilation, workstations, and tubs. Whether you may observe during an appointment depends on salon policy and your dog’s comfort.
- Booking terms: “What is included, how long should the appointment take, what will it cost, and what is your cancellation policy?”
What a good Berner coat plan should include
The Bernese Mountain Dog has a long double coat: a flat, water-resistant outer coat over a thick undercoat. The AKC’s double-coat guidance describes trimming in areas such as the chest, ears, undercarriage, backs of the legs, and tail for some long-coated breeds, according to their breed standards. The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Western Australia notes that show dogs are generally presented in full coat with little trimming. Show presentation is not a requirement for every family pet; discuss the finish you want and the dog’s needs with the groomer.
Routine maintenance centers on brushing. The AKC recommends weekly brushing for Berners and more frequent brushing during seasonal shedding, when their thick coats shed heavily. The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America’s owner flier also describes the breed as double-coated, notes considerable shedding, and recommends regular brushing and periodic bathing, with occasional foot and ear trimming as an option.

Routine shaving is generally discouraged for double-coated dogs because the coat layers help protect the skin and support temperature regulation; shaving can also affect regrowth. Coat regrowth varies, and the available guidance does not establish that every clip permanently damages every dog’s coat. Severe matting, medical needs, or other individual circumstances may require a different plan, ideally made with your veterinarian. A groomer should be willing to explain the reason for substantial clipping rather than treating it as the default.

If the coat plan is unclear, ask for clarification before booking. If a groomer proposes substantial clipping without explaining why, seek a second opinion—especially if the concern is medical or involves severe matting.
Prepare for the first appointment
- Describe the result you want. Explain whether your priority is a tidy pet trim, routine coat care, or another specific outcome. Ask the groomer to describe the planned finish in plain terms.
- Share relevant information. Tell the groomer about your dog’s comfort with handling, any sensitive areas, and any skin or coat concerns. For medical issues, consult your veterinarian about the appropriate plan.
- Agree on the work before it starts. Confirm which areas will be brushed, bathed, or trimmed and whether any clipping is proposed. Ask the groomer to contact you if the plan needs to change.
- Settle the practical details. Confirm the appointment time, expected duration, services, price, and pickup arrangements directly with the salon.
Keeping up coat care at home
Regular brushing helps maintain the coat between professional appointments, with more frequent attention during seasonal shedding. A suitable undercoat rake may be one option, but tool choice and technique matter: ask your groomer what is appropriate for your dog, particularly if the coat is tangled or the skin is sensitive. A home grooming tool supports routine maintenance; it does not replace choosing a groomer whose plan and handling you trust.
