The safest starting points are the Biewer Terrier Club of America (BTCA) member-breeder directory and the American Kennel Club (AKC) referral listing for Biewer Terriers. Neither list is an endorsement. Treat every name as a lead, then verify the parents’ health records, observe how the dogs are raised, discuss the family’s health history, and read the purchase contract before sending a deposit.
For this breed, ask specifically for documented results for both parents for the four BTCA CHIC core screenings: an ACVO eye examination, PRCD-PRA DNA testing, PLL DNA testing, and a patellar-luxation evaluation. Confirm the results through the relevant registry or laboratory rather than relying on a website, a verbal assurance, or an unverified screenshot.

Start with breed-club and AKC referral lists—but do not stop there
The BTCA breeder directory is the club’s suggested first stop for people asking where to find a Biewer Terrier breeder. Its purpose is to connect prospective buyers with member breeders. The AKC’s general guidance likewise points buyers toward the national parent club; its Biewer Terrier referral information identifies BTCA as that parent club.
These directories solve a contact problem, not a quality-control problem. BTCA says featured website links in its directory are a paid opportunity and that its members range from newer to more experienced breeders. The club tells buyers, “As such, we recommend your due diligence in vetting the Biewer Terrier Breeders you may contact.” A listing, paid feature, club membership, or referral contact does not establish that a particular litter was bred responsibly.

Referral pages can change, so confirm that the contact details, websites, and available litters are current when you begin your search. This guidance is U.S.-focused; another country may use a different parent club, registry, or health-testing system.
Know what the four core health screens actually are
BTCA’s health statement and breeder-education material identify four tests as the breed’s CHIC core requirements. AKC’s Biewer Terrier information lists the same four tests as the national breed club’s recommended screenings. Ask for results for the sire and dam of the litter you are considering—not merely a general claim that the kennel “health tests.”
| Screening | What to request | How to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| ACVO eye examination | A dated examination report for each parent, identifying the dog by registered name or other unique identifier. | Check the report and any registry entry connected to that identifier. Confirm the examining professional and examination date. |
| PRCD-PRA DNA test | The individual DNA result for each parent and the testing laboratory’s name. | Use the laboratory documentation or a registry record, not a breeder-created summary alone. |
| PLL DNA test | The individual DNA result for each parent and the testing laboratory’s name. | Match the result to the parent’s registered name, registration number, or microchip identifier where available. |
| Patellar-luxation evaluation | A veterinary evaluation report, including the date, dog identity, and the recorded result. | Look for the corresponding registry information, including an OFA record when the result was submitted there. |
Ask to see the underlying records before you commit. “DNA tested” is not a result; it does not tell you which test was performed, what the finding was, or whether the document belongs to the dog in front of you. A statement that a dog has a CHIC number is also not a substitute for reviewing the individual results. For each document, compare the registered name or identifier with the parent named in the litter information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat these tests can—and cannot—tell you
The four screens address specific inherited or orthopedic concerns. They cannot certify that a puppy will never become ill, nor do they cover every condition that can occur in a Biewer Terrier. A conscientious breeder should be willing to explain the findings in plain language and discuss how the results influenced a breeding decision.

Ask about additional testing without confusing “optional” with “required”
BTCA lists cardiac evaluation, Legg-Calvé-Perthes screening, serum bile acids, the degenerative myelopathy common variant, and hyperuricosuria among optional screening areas. Optional does not mean useless, and it does not mean every breeder must perform every test for every dog. Ask why a breeder selected additional tests for a particular line, what a result means, and whether a result applies to both parents.
Keep the categories separate when you compare breeders: the four tests in the table are BTCA’s CHIC core; the other areas are listed by BTCA as optional. A breeder who offers extra results may be providing useful information, but those results should not obscure missing core records.
Use the breed’s health context to ask better questions
BTCA’s health statement, approved December 17, 2025, describes the Biewer Terrier as generally hearty and relatively young as a breed, with few known health issues at this time. It also notes retained baby teeth, tartar buildup, and sensitive gastrointestinal systems. AKC similarly describes the breed as relatively healthy while noting occasional soft or discolored stools and advising veterinary attention when problems persist.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →These observations describe issues reported for the breed, not a prediction about a particular puppy. Ask whether the sire, dam, their relatives, or earlier litters have had dental procedures, retained teeth, chronic digestive upset, or other recurring problems. Request dates, diagnoses, and treatments when a breeder reports an issue. A frank answer—including an answer about an issue that occurred—is more informative than a claim that a family has never had any health concern.

Compare breeders on evidence, not presentation
Once you have several names, use the same questions and documents for each. A polished website and attractive photographs can make a kennel look established, but they are not evidence of health or husbandry. The following framework keeps the comparison focused on things you can check.
| What to compare | Evidence worth seeing | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Parent health | Results for all four BTCA CHIC core screens for the actual sire and dam. | Are the records complete, current where an examination has a validity period, and independently verifiable? |
| Family history | Specific information about conditions in parents, relatives, and previous litters. | Does the breeder disclose problems and explain how they affected breeding decisions? |
| Living conditions | A visit or live video showing the dam, puppies, housing, cleanliness, and daily interaction. | Do the conditions look safe, calm, and consistent with the breeder’s description? |
| Communication | Clear answers, complete records, and time for your questions. | Will the breeder discuss limitations rather than promising a risk-free puppy? |
| Placement plan | A written contract, health terms, and a return or rehoming process. | What happens if your circumstances change or the dog cannot remain in your home? |
| After-placement support | Specific contact arrangements and practical guidance for the dog’s lifetime. | Who do you contact when a health or behavior question arises? |
Do not rank a breeder by the number of titles, social-media followers, or years in business alone. Those facts may provide context, but they do not replace the records and conversations above.
Questions to ask before you reserve a puppy
Health and records
- May I review the sire’s and dam’s results for the ACVO eye examination, PRCD-PRA DNA test, PLL DNA test, and patellar-luxation evaluation?
- What are the parents’ registered names or unique identifiers, and where can I independently verify each result?
- Which laboratory performed each DNA test?
- What health problems have occurred in the parents, their relatives, or prior litters, including dental and gastrointestinal problems?
- What optional tests have you chosen for this line, and why?
Puppy care and development
- What veterinary examinations, vaccinations, parasite-control treatments, and identification procedures has each puppy received?
- What handling and social exposure have the puppies had, and how do you describe their individual temperaments?
- May I meet the mother and see where the puppies are raised, either in person or through a live video call?
- What happens if a puppy’s health finding changes before pickup?
Placement and support
- How do you decide which puppy suits a buyer’s household, activity level, and experience?
- What written health guarantee or other health terms are included, and what do they require from the buyer?
- Does the contract require that you be contacted if the dog cannot remain with us?
- What return, rehoming, and lifetime support do you provide?
These are buyer due-diligence questions, not a claim that BTCA or AKC mandates every item on the list. The purpose is to learn how a particular breeder operates and whether the arrangement fits your household.

See the dam, litter, and routine—not just a puppy photograph
A responsible breeder should be able to show you the mother and the place where the litter is raised, subject to sensible biosecurity and the puppies’ age. In person, observe whether the area is clean, secure, and appropriate for small puppies. Notice whether the dam appears comfortable with the breeder and whether the breeder can describe her normal routine, appetite, and veterinary care.

If distance makes a visit impractical, request a live, two-way video call rather than a prerecorded tour. Ask the breeder to show the puppies, the dam, the living area, and documents you have already discussed. A live call cannot replace every in-person safeguard, but it makes it harder to present old footage or a different litter as current.
Do not take a puppy away from its mother or littermates solely because a breeder pressures you to decide immediately. Ask for time to review records and the contract. A legitimate health or travel deadline should still leave room for clear documentation and questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Read the contract before paying a deposit
The contract should identify the puppy and seller, state what veterinary care and records will be supplied, and explain any health terms. Read the conditions carefully: some agreements specify required veterinary examinations, notification periods, or remedies if a covered condition is diagnosed. Make sure you understand whether the breeder will take the dog back or help arrange a safe home if you can no longer keep it.

Recognize warning signs
- The breeder will not provide parent records, registered names, or laboratory information.
- Documents show a different dog, an unclear identifier, or a result that cannot be checked independently.
- The breeder says that registration, a CHIC number, or club membership proves the puppy is healthy.
- You are discouraged from meeting the dam or seeing the litter’s living conditions.
- Every puppy is described as identical, guaranteed perfect, or free of all future health risk.
- The breeder refuses to discuss problems in relatives or previous litters.
- You are pushed to pay quickly, use an irreversible payment method, or accept a contract you have not read.
- There is no clear plan for veterinary records, return, rehoming, or support after placement.
One concern does not automatically prove unethical conduct; for example, a breeder may limit visits during a disease outbreak. Ask for an alternative such as a live video call and judge the explanation alongside the records and contract.
A practical search process
- Define your requirements. Decide whether you need a companion, show prospect, or another role; consider children, other animals, grooming time, and your ability to manage a toy breed.
- Gather leads. Start with the BTCA member directory and the AKC Biewer Terrier referral information. Record the date you checked each listing because contacts and litters change.
- Contact several breeders. Send the same core questions and ask for the parents’ four screening records before discussing a deposit.
- Verify the documents. Match each result to the correct parent and check registry or laboratory information. Ask about any discrepancy rather than guessing.
- Discuss the family history. Ask about dental, gastrointestinal, orthopedic, eye, and other recurring concerns in the line, and listen for specific, consistent answers.
- Evaluate the setting. Visit or use a live video call to meet the dam and see the puppies’ environment and daily care.
- Review placement terms. Read the contract, health provisions, return or rehoming policy, pickup timing, and post-placement support before paying.
- Use your veterinarian. Arrange an independent examination promptly after the puppy comes home and provide the veterinarian with the breeder’s records. Persistent soft or discolored stools, dental problems, or any other concern warrants veterinary advice.
What registration and breed history do—and do not—prove
The Biewer Terrier became the AKC’s 197th recognized breed and entered the Toy Group on January 1, 2021. That date explains why you may find newer or less uniform referral networks than for long-established breeds; it is not evidence that any breeder is responsible.
Registration identifies a dog within a registry and can make records easier to trace. Referral listings provide a route to contact breeders. Neither establishes safe breeding decisions, truthful advertising, adequate socialization, or a lifetime commitment to a dog. Those questions must be answered by the individual’s records, practices, and written terms.

Make the decision on verifiable care
A reputable lead becomes a credible choice only when the breeder can show the four core screening results for both parents, explain the wider family history, let you see the dam and raising conditions, answer questions without pressure, and provide clear written responsibilities after placement. If a breeder cannot supply that evidence, continue your search even if the listing, photographs, or registration looks impressive.
