Choose a kitten by how its needs and known history fit your household—not by coat color or one appealing first meeting. Think about the time you can give, your children and other pets, and whether you are ready for the extra attention kittens need. Then ask about the kitten’s health and care records, and arrange a veterinary visit soon after bringing it home.
1. Is your family ready for a kitten’s daily care?
A kitten needs daily feeding, fresh water, a clean litter area, play, and supervision. Consider who will handle those tasks and whether the household can keep up with them as schedules change. Children can help, but an adult remains responsible for the animal’s care.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says children are usually mature enough to handle and care for a pet around age 5 or 6, while stressing that readiness varies by child and situation. Young children need close supervision and clear guidance on gentle handling. AAP guidance on children and pets

2. How do you match a kitten’s energy and personality to your home?
Consider your family’s activity level, available time, children, and resident animals. At a calm meeting, notice whether the kitten is alert, responsive, curious, playful, and willing to engage. Ask how it behaves in familiar surroundings, too; a shelter or foster caregiver may have seen more of its everyday behavior than a brief visit can reveal.

One meeting is only a snapshot. A kitten’s behavior in that moment cannot guarantee its adult temperament, and shyness or high energy during a short encounter does not tell the whole story. Look for a fit with your household rather than ranking kittens by appearance. CDC guidance on choosing and caring for cats and Cornell Feline Health Center guidance on adopting a cat
3. Would an adult cat be a better fit than a kitten?
Kittens are often energetic and need more attention and supervision. An adult cat’s personality is generally more established, and its care is usually less intensive than a kitten’s. That can make an adult easier to assess for fit with children, other pets, or a quieter home.
Neither age is best for every family. Choose based on the care your household can provide and the kind of companion you want. Merck Veterinary Manual guidance on selecting a cat

4. What should you look for when meeting a kitten?
Notice visible signs that may warrant questions or veterinary advice. Cornell describes a healthy-looking kitten as active and responsive, with bright, clear eyes, clean nostrils and ears, a healthy coat, and a suitable body condition. Ask about sneezing, discharge, diarrhea, unusual lethargy, or abnormal breathing; do not treat a visual check as a medical clearance.
- Observe whether the kitten is alert and responsive.
- Look for discharge around the eyes or nose, dirty ears, or a poor-looking coat.
- Ask about any recent illness, medication, or change in appetite or stool.
- Seek veterinary advice for concerning signs, especially abnormal breathing or marked lethargy.
Appearance can help you spot concerns, but only a veterinarian can assess the kitten medically. Cornell Feline Health Center and CDC cat guidance
5. What history and records should you ask for?
Ask the shelter, foster caregiver, or breeder what is known about the kitten’s age, weaning, human socialization, current food, health, vaccinations, and parasite control. Request copies of available veterinary records and ask what care is due next. If the kitten is a particular breed, ask whether breed-related health risks or screening are relevant.

These details help your veterinarian tailor care to the kitten’s age, history, and location. Missing records do not by themselves establish that a kitten is unhealthy, but they do mean you should not assume a particular vaccine, parasite treatment, or exam has already happened. AAHA/AAFP kitten life-stage guidance and Merck Veterinary Manual
6. How can you assess the source and care included?
Ask precisely what the kitten has received and what remains due, rather than relying on general statements about the source. Cats from shelters may already have received vaccinations or been spayed or neutered, but arrangements vary; verify the details for this kitten and obtain documentation when available.
Be cautious about an unknown medical history, pressure to decide or pay quickly, or an online listing that you cannot verify. No adoption or purchase route replaces an independent veterinary check after the kitten comes home. Merck Veterinary Manual guidance on selecting a cat

7. When should you take the kitten to a veterinarian?
Plan a first veterinary visit within the first week at home; contact a clinic sooner if the kitten has concerning symptoms. Bring the records you received and ask the veterinarian to review health, parasite screening, vaccines, nutrition, behavior, and the timing of spay or neuter care. The plan should reflect the kitten’s age, history, and location rather than a schedule guessed from incomplete records.
AAHA recommends a first visit within the first week at home; CDC guidance advises veterinary care within a few days to a week.

How to compare kittens when you have more than one candidate
Use the same questions for each candidate so that a striking appearance or a single lively meeting does not dominate the decision.
- Care demands: How much time and supervision does this kitten appear to need, and can your household provide it?
- Household fit: What is known about its behavior around children, people, and other animals?
- Health and history: What concerns have been observed, and how complete are the medical and care records?
- Support: What guidance and documentation can the source provide, and what will your veterinarian need to follow up?
Choose the candidate whose needs and known circumstances best match your family’s capacity—not the one that simply makes the strongest first impression.
