Before fostering kittens, find out whether their mother is caring for them, then match the care plan to their age and health. Very young orphaned kittens need frequent feeding and hands-on care; older kittens may need socialization or medical support. A local shelter, rescue or veterinarian can help assess the kittens and set a safe plan.

1. If you find kittens outside, check before taking them in

An unattended litter is not necessarily orphaned. A mother cat may be away finding food or staying out of sight while people are nearby. If the kittens look clean, plump and quiet, ASPCA guidance recommends providing food and dry shelter while monitoring from a distance rather than immediately removing them. See the ASPCA’s advice on kittens found outside.

If a kitten appears ill or injured, contact a shelter, rescue or veterinary clinic promptly and call ahead to confirm it can accept them. If you bring kittens indoors, check for an identification tag and ask a veterinarian or shelter to scan for a microchip. Local rules for reporting or handling found animals may also apply.

2. Choose a foster role that fits your time and experience

Fostering can mean anything from helping older kittens become comfortable around people to caring for neonates who need frequent feeding. The ASPCA’s description of its foster roles gives a useful sense of the differences, but the roles available and support provided depend on the local program.

NOVYQREN Pet Nursing Kit for Newborn Puppies, Kitten & Small Animals
  • One-Stop Scientific Feeding: Designed specifically for newborn kittens, puppies, and various small animals, this kit includes a 50ml professional feeding bottle, four precision syringes of different capacities (1ml, 3ml, 5ml, 10ml), four biomimetic nipples, as well as a funnel and measuring cup. From precise feeding immediately after birth to supplemental feeding during the transition period, this single kit meets all your care needs.
  • Precise Measurement for Safe Feeding: Recognizing that newborn pets are extremely sensitive to feeding amounts, the kit includes four syringes of different sizes, each featuring clear, durable graduations. This allows you to control feeding with milliliter-level precision based on your pet’s weight and age, effectively preventing choking or digestive strain caused by overfeeding.
  • Bio-Mimetic Nipples: Made from ultra-soft, food-grade silicone, these bio-mimetic nipples replicate the natural feel of a mother dog or cat’s mouth. They are bite-resistant and gentle on the mouth. Multiple nipple shapes are available to suit pets of different sizes and developmental stages, increasing the success rate of feeding.
  • Easy to Clean, Comes with a Dedicated Storage Case: The included cleaning brush easily reaches the bottom of bottles and syringes, ensuring no milk residue remains. All accessories are neatly stored in a transparent storage jar/container, making it convenient for home storage and keeping your tools organized and ready to use—whether you’re traveling with your pet or on the go.
  • Essential Professional Tools for Young Pets: Whether caring for orphaned puppies or kittens, administering medication to sick adult pets, or providing nutritional support for frail premature pets, this multifunctional kit offers the most professional support. The included measuring cup and funnel make the process of mixing formula more precise and spill-free, making it the ideal assistant for pet owners and animal rescuers.
Foster role Typical needs What to consider
Classic kitten foster Often kittens four to eight weeks old; care may include feeding, supervision and socialization. Ask what daily care and adoption preparation the program expects.
Neonatal or bottle-baby foster Very young kittens may need bottle or syringe feeding and care around the clock. Confirm you can meet the feeding schedule and learn the organization’s handling instructions.
Medical foster Kittens needing care during or after treatment. Ask which tasks you will handle and when the kitten must be seen by a veterinarian.
Ringworm foster Kittens receiving care for ringworm. Ask about isolation, cleaning and protective measures before agreeing.

The ASPCA describes these categories in an article dated July 10, 2023. Its program provides guidance, training, medical care, food, equipment and supplies in its service areas; support elsewhere varies. Ask your local shelter or rescue what it supplies, what training it offers and who to contact if a kitten’s condition changes.

3. Plan care around age, especially for orphaned kittens

Orphaned kittens need a caregiver to take over care their mother would normally provide. Kitten Lady’s Fostering 101 recommends the following feeding and stimulation intervals for kittens in the first four weeks. These are practical age-based recommendations, not a substitute for instructions tailored to an individual kitten.

Kitten age Recommended feeding and stimulation interval
0–1 week Every 2 hours
1–2 weeks Every 2–3 hours
2–3 weeks Every 3 hours
3–4 weeks Every 4 hours

Feeding is only part of neonatal care. Kittens too young to urinate and defecate independently need help eliminating after each feeding, according to Kitten Lady. Before taking in a very young litter, make sure you can provide the required attention, including overnight, and get specific care instructions from the foster organization or veterinarian.

4. Use kitten formula for orphaned kittens and wean gradually

For orphaned kittens from birth to four weeks, Kitten Lady recommends kitten formula rather than cow’s milk. During weaning, kitten milk replacer can be combined with kitten food to make a soft gruel. The ASPCA’s cat nutrition guidance says weaning normally starts around four weeks and is usually complete by eight to ten weeks; hand-fed kittens may be ready to begin around three weeks.

Pet-Ag Nursing Kit - 2 oz
  • NURSING KIT - This kit was designed to feed Esbilac, KMR, Goat’s Milk KMR, Goat’s Milk Esbilac, PetLac, or other liquids to small animals.
  • WHAT’S INCLUDED - The kit includes a 2 oz. nursing bottle with cap, 5 silicone nipples (3 regular, 1 elongated for smaller mouths, 1 balloon for larger mouths), and a bottle brush.
  • PROMOTES NATURAL FEEDING - Our flexible, latex-free nipples simulate the milking action of a mother’s nipple, which develops facial muscles and stimulates the normal flow of saliva. Bottle feeding also allows the animal to refuse formula when full.
  • EASY TO USE - Marked with gradations, the included bottle makes monitoring food intake easier and helps prevent over or under feeding. It’s durable enough to stand up to repeated use, and is easy to clean thoroughly with the brush.
  • ABOUT US - PetAg is a trusted leader in pet wellness, with science-backed formulas in our milk replacers, health supplements, and grooming products helping pet owners to proactively enhance the lives of their pets, for more healthy years together.
  1. Ask the shelter or veterinarian which kitten milk replacer and feeding method to use for the kitten.
  2. When the kitten is ready to start weaning, offer a soft gruel made from kitten food and formula.
  3. As the kitten learns to eat, gradually reduce the formula rather than stopping it abruptly.
  4. Do not push the kitten’s nose into the bowl; inhaling liquid can be dangerous.

Kittens learn eating, litter-box use and play by observing their mother, and abrupt separation can affect health and socialization, the ASPCA cautions. When it is safe and practical, follow the shelter’s advice about keeping kittens with their mother through the transition.

5. Set up a clean, warm space and protect resident animals

Prepare a dedicated area before bringing foster kittens home. Kitten Lady’s care guidance flags quarantine as a way to protect both incoming kittens and animals already in the household. Ask the foster organization how long to keep the kittens separate and what hygiene practices to follow; do not assume a new arrival is ready to share space, food bowls or litter equipment.

Doggiema Kittens Feeder Bottle,Silicone Feeding Nipple and Syringes
  • Angled Bottle Design for Natural Feeding: 45 angled kitten bottles allow nursing pet babies to drink milk while lying down, which is the most natural way for pet babies to feed. The ergonomic design provides comfort during feeding sessions, and holding the kitten feeding bottle for extended periods will not cause fatigue. The kitten nipple can be used in conjunction with a syringe for accurate milk portion control, especially useful when weak kittens need syringe feeding
  • Three Silicone Nipple Sizes for All Ages: Three different sizes of pacifiers ensure kitten feeders can be used from birth to weaning. The soft silicone nipple is appealing for kittens and puppies. If the nipple's milk outlet needs adjustment, scissors can be used to widen the opening for better flow
  • Ventilation System to Reduce Choking: Bottle features a ventilation system similar to human baby bottles, eliminating the need for manual ventilation during feeding and reducing the probability of choking on milk. Provides a safety protection comparable to infant feeding products
  • Complete Feeding Kit Included: The product includes 1 x 60ml bottle, 1 x 5ml syringe, 1 x small nipple, 1 x medium nipple, and 1 x large nipple, providing everything needed for feeding kittens at various stages of development
  • Safety Precaution for Teething Pets: When pet babies develop sharp teeth, use the feeding products with caution as nipples can be easily bitten off or swallowed by accident. Monitor your pet during feeding to ensure safe usage

Keep the kittens’ area clean and make sure very young kittens can stay warm. For additional practical materials, ASPCApro provides foster-family care sheets covering feeding, housing and bathing, including a kitten bottle-feeding guide. Follow the foster organization’s instructions if they differ from general guidance, because needs and protocols vary by kitten.

6. Call for help when a kitten seems unwell

Do not try to diagnose a serious problem or choose a medication based on a general article. Kitten Lady identifies lethargy, breathing trouble and injury as reasons to seek emergency veterinary care. Contact the foster organization or a veterinarian promptly if you are concerned, and follow their directions for urgent assessment.

Puppy Bottles for Nursing,Kitten Bottles for Nursing,Pet Feeding Bottle,(Cyan - 20ml)
  • Soft silicone pacifier: Soft silicone pacifier, even if the newborn kitten and dog without teeth can suck and drink smoothly, and will not choke when drinking milk
  • Pinhole liquid outlet: As long as the newborn kittens and puppies suck or nibble, the milk can flow out smoothly, thus achieving the purpose of feeding
  • Anti-choking valve design: The bottle body is controlled by the pressure valve, which can limit the flow in the drop inlet and control the milk flow to prevent choking
  • Capacity: 20 ml
  • Emergency signs: lethargy, difficulty breathing or an injury warrant urgent veterinary attention.
  • Preventive care and treatment: have the veterinarian or foster organization set the plan for each kitten, including any medicines or flea treatments.
  • Unclear symptoms: call the organization that arranged the foster or a veterinary clinic for advice rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.

Before you agree to foster

Use this short checklist to confirm the arrangement is workable:

  • You know whether the mother cat is present or whether the kittens need to be assessed as orphans.
  • You understand the kittens’ ages, feeding schedule and any help they need to eliminate.
  • You have the required time, including overnight care if you are taking neonates.
  • You have a separate, clean space and know the quarantine instructions.
  • You know which supplies and training the organization provides, who to call about illness and how adoption planning will work.
