Foster a rescue animal safely by giving it a secure, easy-to-clean retreat; keeping it separate from resident pets for about 14 days by default; confirming veterinary, vaccination and parasite-prevention plans; and introducing animals in controlled stages. Use dedicated bowls, litter equipment and cleaning tools, keep routines predictable, supervise every interaction with children or pets, and isolate illness immediately. The rescue organization and veterinarian should set the final plan when an animal’s medical history, exposure or legal quarantine status changes the risk.

What does safe fostering involve?

Safe fostering is a household management plan, not simply providing food and affection. You are protecting resident animals from contagious disease, preventing escapes and bites, reducing stress for an animal with an incomplete history, and giving the rescue timely information about health or behavior.

Build the plan around six controls:

  • Health control: verify preventive care, medications and testing with the rescue and veterinarian.
  • Physical control: use a secure room, crate, exercise pen or gate that the animal cannot push through, climb over or open.
  • Hygiene control: use separate equipment and a clean-then-disinfect routine.
  • Introduction control: move from scent and barriers to short, supervised meetings.
  • Stress control: provide a quiet retreat and consistent feeding, toileting, walking and medication times.
  • Escalation control: know whom to call for illness, escape attempts, bites, aggression or a change in legal quarantine status.

ASPCApro recommends discussing housing, separation and animal-specific risks with caregivers before placement. Ask the rescue to confirm which parts of its own protocol take priority if they differ from general guidance.

What should I ask the rescue before pickup?

Get the animal’s history and the organization’s written instructions before it enters your home. Missing information is itself a reason to use stricter separation and slower introductions until a professional can advise you.

Medical and exposure questions

  • Which vaccines has the animal received, on what dates, and which are still due?
  • What parasite prevention has been given, and when is the next dose due?
  • Has the animal had testing for conditions relevant to its species, age or origin?
  • Has it recently been in a shelter, transport vehicle, boarding facility, kennel, outdoor colony or another foster home?
  • What symptoms, allergies, chronic conditions or medications should you monitor?

Behavior and handling questions

  • Is there a known bite, escape, guarding, chasing or handling history?
  • How does the animal respond to dogs, cats, children, visitors, crates, leashes, grooming and being touched?
  • What food, portion, feeding frequency, litter substrate and toileting routine has it been using?
  • Which situations trigger fear, freezing, vocalizing or defensive behavior?

Operational questions

  • Which room, crate, pen and separation protocol does the rescue require?
  • Who is the daytime and after-hours emergency contact?
  • Who authorizes veterinary care and how are invoices handled?
  • What should you do if the animal escapes, bites someone, refuses food or develops diarrhea?
  • Does a state or local quarantine order, transport restriction or import condition apply?

Save the answers, medication schedule and emergency numbers where every adult in the household can find them. HumanePro recommends written symptom protocols and readily available emergency medical contacts.

How do I prepare a safe room or enclosure?

Prepare the retreat before pickup so the animal goes directly into a controlled area. It should be climate-controlled, escape-resistant, free of hazards and simple to clean.

For cats and kittens

A spare bathroom or bedroom works well. HSSV advises removing cords and small objects, securing doors and providing a litter box. Block gaps behind appliances or furniture where a frightened cat could become unreachable. Put the litter box away from food and water, and provide a covered or otherwise quiet hiding option that you can still access in an emergency.

For dogs

Use a crate large enough for the dog to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably, or an exercise pen in a dog-proof room. A baby gate can block stairs or rooms containing hazards. Check that latches close fully and that the dog cannot climb, dig under or knock over the barrier. A crate is a management tool, not a substitute for walks, enrichment, toilet breaks or human contact.

Remove common hazards

  • Electrical cords, medications, cleaners, pesticides and toxic plants.
  • Small objects, plastic, string, children’s toys and anything that can be swallowed.
  • Open windows, balcony access, loose screens and doors that do not latch.
  • Unsecured trash, food, litter products and standing water.
  • Furniture gaps or vents where a small animal could disappear.

Keep the retreat private, but do not isolate the animal from all human contact. Sit quietly nearby, speak softly and allow it to approach rather than forcing handling.

Which foster setup should I choose?

Choose the arrangement that gives you the strongest combination of disease control, escape resistance, cleanability, low stress and supervision that your home can sustain.

Setup Best use Advantages Limitations and checks
Separate room New cats, kittens, sick animals or homes with several resident pets Strong physical separation; easy to zone food, litter and cleaning supplies Requires a secure door, hazard-proofing and enough space for exercise and enrichment
Crate plus baby gate Controlled dog management when a full room is unavailable Creates layers of containment and supports gradual visual access Crate must be correctly sized; dog still needs regular activity and cannot remain confined continuously
Exercise pen Puppies, small dogs or temporary indoor zoning More movement than a crate and can hold bedding, water and enrichment Some animals climb or push pens; anchor panels and inspect gaps
Barrier introduction First visual contact with resident animals Gate, screen or cracked door allows sight and scent while preventing chasing Progress only while both animals remain relaxed; never treat a barrier as escape-proof without checking it

How long should a foster pet stay separate from resident pets?

Use 14 days, or two weeks, as the default separation period unless the rescue and veterinarian approve a risk-based alternative. ASPCApro states, “Generally, newly arrived foster animals should be separated from pets in the home for 14 days.” Best Friends Animal Society likewise describes two weeks as a default and notes that age, vaccination and exposure alter risk.

Best Friends cites a three- to 14-day incubation range for common infectious diseases. An animal can therefore appear healthy while developing an illness. Keep the foster in its own room or behind secure layers, and do not share bowls, litter tools, bedding, toys or grooming equipment during this period.

When the default is not enough

Ask for a longer or modified plan when the animal is unvaccinated, very young, recently exposed, symptomatic, imported, or coming from a setting with a known outbreak. Keep foster animals from different shelters or rescue groups apart when possible because mixing populations increases transmission opportunities.

Puppy and kitten precautions

Young puppies should not walk on potentially contaminated soil until fully vaccinated. Best Friends recommends concrete, a sidewalk or puppy pads instead of grass, rock or dirt for young puppies. Follow the rescue veterinarian’s schedule for vaccination, parasite prevention and safe outdoor access; do not assume a single vaccine removes all exposure risk.

How do I clean and disinfect a foster area?

Cleaning removes dirt and organic material; disinfection inactivates remaining pathogens. Disinfect only after the surface has been cleaned, and follow the product label for dilution, surface compatibility, ventilation and contact time.

  1. Move the animal to a secure, clean area before handling contaminated bedding or equipment.
  2. Put on the protective equipment your rescue or veterinarian recommends and remove visible feces, vomit, food and other organic matter.
  3. Wash the surface with detergent and water, then rinse if the label requires it.
  4. Apply a disinfectant at the label dilution and keep the surface visibly wet for the full contact time.
  5. Rinse food-contact surfaces when directed, let everything dry, and return clean bedding and equipment.
  6. Wash your hands before and after handling the animal, waste, food bowls or cleaning products.

ASPCApro gives accelerated-hydrogen-peroxide examples of 1:32 for 10 minutes or 1:16 for five minutes. Those are examples from that organization’s guidance, not universal instructions for every product. Phenol-based disinfectants are toxic to cats; do not use them around feline foster animals. Store dedicated brushes, scoops, gloves and buckets in the sick-animal area rather than carrying them through the home.

Reduce cross-contamination

  • Handle healthy resident pets before the foster, then change or clean contaminated clothing when the rescue advises it.
  • Use separate laundry hampers and wash soiled bedding according to the fabric and product instructions.
  • Carry the foster in a clean carrier or vehicle surface that can be disinfected.
  • Keep waste sealed and follow local disposal rules.

How do I introduce a foster dog or cat to resident animals?

Introduce animals only after the separation period and a health review. Start with scent, add a physical barrier, then conduct brief supervised meetings; move back a step whenever either animal shows fear, fixation or aggression.

Stage 1: exchange scent

Rotate blankets or bedding between areas, or let animals smell one another under a closed door. Keep the exchange low-pressure: do not push an item into an animal’s face or punish hissing, growling or avoidance. Feed treats or meals on opposite sides of the closed door if both animals remain comfortable.

Stage 2: use a barrier

Try a baby gate, screen or slightly opened door. Keep sessions short and end while both animals are calm. A cat should have an escape route and elevated hiding places. Introduce one resident cat at a time rather than presenting the foster to a group.

Stage 3: hold a controlled meeting

For a dog-cat meeting, keep the dog on a leash and let the cat choose whether to approach. Remove high-value chews and toys at first, and feed animals separately to reduce guarding conflicts. Keep a second adult available when possible, and do not wrap your hands around animals that are fighting.

Stage 4: increase time gradually

Add minutes, distance and freedom only after repeated calm sessions. Watch for stiff posture, hard staring, stalking, lunging, hiding, pinned ears, raised hackles, repeated hissing or escalating vocalization. Calmly separate the animals and return to the last successful stage if any of these appear.

American Humane Society states, “When no one is home, animals should remain safely separated so unsupervised interactions cannot occur.” Continue that rule until repeated observations show reliable safety; some pairings need separation for the entire foster stay.

How should I manage food, toys and other resources?

Separate resources prevent competition while you learn the animal’s habits. Feed the foster behind a closed door or secure barrier, and keep resident pets out of the area until bowls are removed.

  • Use separate food and water bowls and wash them with dedicated equipment.
  • Follow the rescue’s food, portion and medication instructions rather than changing diets abruptly.
  • Remove high-value chews, bones and favorite toys during first introductions.
  • Give each animal its own resting place, litter box or toilet area.
  • Observe appetite, drinking, urination and stool so you can report changes promptly.

Never take food away from an animal that is eating. If guarding appears, close the door and contact the rescue for a behavior plan instead of attempting to “test” the animal.

How can I make a foster feel secure?

Predictability lowers stress. Humane Rescue Alliance summarizes this as, “Animals crave predictability.” Keep feeding, walks, medication, toilet breaks, quiet time and bedtime at consistent times.

Give the animal a private retreat and let it choose when to approach. Expand access room by room as confidence and safe behavior improve; a sudden run of the whole house can create hiding, house-soiling or escape problems. Use calm enrichment appropriate to the species and medical status, and avoid overwhelming a newly arrived animal with handling, photography or training demands.

Children and visitors

  • Assume the history and tolerance are incomplete, even if the animal seems friendly.
  • Supervise every child-animal interaction.
  • Keep children away while an animal is eating, chewing or sleeping.
  • Prohibit teasing, chasing, hugging, riding or cornering.
  • Do not let young children walk a foster dog.
  • Limit visitors during the first days; make visits brief, quiet and positive.

Tell visitors not to open the foster room or exterior doors without your permission. Use the retreat whenever you cannot actively supervise.

What should I do if my foster animal gets sick?

Isolate first, then contact the rescue and veterinarian promptly. Do not wait to see whether symptoms spread to resident pets.

Signs that require immediate separation

  • Vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Coughing, sneezing or labored breathing.
  • Eye or nasal discharge.
  • Marked lethargy, refusal to eat or drink, fever or sudden behavior change.
  • Unexplained skin lesions, heavy parasite burden or neurological signs.

Move the foster to the designated sick-animal area, use dedicated equipment, wash hands and prevent contact with resident pets. ASPCApro advises continuing isolation until signs resolve and a veterinarian considers transmission risk minimal. Record onset, frequency, appearance of vomit or stool, temperature if a professional has shown you how to take it, food and water intake, medications and contacts with other animals.

Emergency escalation

Call the rescue’s emergency number and seek veterinary help for breathing difficulty, collapse, uncontrolled bleeding, repeated seizures, suspected poisoning, severe dehydration, heat illness or a serious bite. Follow the rescue’s authorization process when time allows, but do not delay emergency stabilization while trying to reach a non-urgent contact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Legal quarantine or movement restrictions

Formal quarantine rules override ordinary foster logistics. Massachusetts guidance says an animal under quarantine should stay where it is and may require written authorization before moving. CDC rescue guidance says sick or exposed imported dogs should not enter foster homes until appropriate authorization is obtained. Ask the rescue or local public-health authority before transporting, surrendering or rehoming an animal covered by an order.

What supplies do I need to foster a dog or cat?

Buy or borrow only what matches the rescue’s instructions, but prepare the basic containment, hygiene and identification equipment before pickup.

When is a home not the right foster placement?

Tell the rescue before accepting an animal if you cannot provide a separate space, reliable supervision, secure containment, transport to veterinary care or separation from resident animals. A placement is unsafe when an adult cannot consistently enforce doors and gates, when a resident pet is medically fragile, or when household members cannot follow the handling plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask for a different placement or professional support if the foster repeatedly escapes, threatens people or animals, cannot be safely handled for essential care, or develops symptoms that require isolation you cannot provide. Reporting a mismatch early protects the foster, your pets and the next household; it is not a failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I foster a rescue animal if I already have pets?

Often, yes, if you can provide a separate room or secure enclosure and follow the rescue’s quarantine and introduction plan. A veterinarian may recommend a different arrangement when a resident pet is elderly, immunocompromised or otherwise high-risk.

Should foster animals share a water bowl with my pets?

No during the separation period, and separate bowls remain sensible when illness or guarding is possible. Label bowls and clean them with equipment reserved for that animal’s area.

How do I know whether a foster dog is ready to meet my cat?

Readiness means the dog can remain loose-bodied and responsive behind a barrier while the cat can eat, move and retreat normally. A calm look through a gate is not proof of safety; progress requires repeated supervised sessions with a leash and escape routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if my foster pet bites someone?

Separate the animal without putting yourself at additional risk, provide first aid and seek medical advice for the injured person. Notify the rescue immediately because bite-reporting, vaccination verification and local public-health requirements may apply.
