Call a veterinarian or emergency animal hospital before trying to move your dog. Describe the symptoms or injury, say that you have no car, and ask where to go, how quickly you must travel, and whether the clinic knows a local animal ambulance, pet taxi, or other suitable service. The practice you normally use may be closed or may direct you to an emergency hospital.
1. Decide how urgent the trip is
Do not wait for a ride while trying to diagnose the problem yourself. A veterinary professional can help you prioritize the trip and give handling instructions that fit your dog’s condition. First aid may keep a dog stable briefly, but it does not replace examination and treatment. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) puts it plainly: “First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care.”

If poisoning is possible
In the United States, call your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital promptly and follow its instructions. Poison-control services can provide additional advice, but contact details and fees vary by country and can change. Do not induce vomiting or give food, milk, or medication unless a veterinary professional specifically tells you to do so. Keep the product packaging, label, or a photograph of the substance for the clinic.
2. Make the destination and transport plan by phone
Use the first call to remove uncertainty before you leave the house. Ask the veterinary team to confirm:
- Destination: the exact clinic address, entrance to use, and whether the regular practice is open or is referring you elsewhere.
- Urgency: whether you should leave immediately, whether any brief first-aid step is appropriate, and what change means you should call back.
- Acceptance: that the clinic can receive your dog and has the appropriate emergency facilities.
- Loading help: whether staff can meet you outside or help transfer a large, weak, or painful dog.
- Transport contacts: whether the practice knows a local animal ambulance, pet taxi, or other animal-accepting service.
- Information to bring: medication names and doses, medical records, the time symptoms began, and details of any accident or possible toxin.
Keep the phone on speaker if another person is helping you. Write down the destination and repeat it back so a driver or helper does not take you to the wrong facility.

Choose the option that gets your dog to the clinic safely and soonest. Availability, cost, and equipment differ by location, so verify directly rather than assuming a service accepts animals.
| Option | How to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Friend, family member, or neighbour | Call several people at once and explain that the dog may need help loading and must go to a specified clinic. | A private vehicle may not have space or equipment for a very large, immobile, or heavily bleeding dog. |
| Animal ambulance | Ask the veterinarian for a local provider and describe the dog’s size, condition, and whether lifting assistance is needed. | Coverage and emergency response times vary; it may not be available in your area. |
| Pet taxi | Confirm that the service carries dogs in medical distress and can handle a carrier, stretcher, or multiple people. | Some services provide only ordinary rides and may refuse severe emergencies or dogs that cannot be safely restrained. |
| Pet-accepting taxi or rideshare | Check the current policy before booking and tell the driver the dog is injured or sick. | Pet-friendly does not necessarily mean medically equipped. A driver may cancel if the dog is bleeding, vomiting, or too large to load safely. |
Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons guidance for the UK lists private transport, friends or family, animal ambulances, and taxis that carry animals as possible arrangements. That guidance is UK-specific; services and rules differ elsewhere. The RCVS also notes that, except in unusual circumstances, a veterinary practice is generally best placed to provide the equipment, medicines, and facilities an animal needs.

4. Prepare the dog and the people moving it
Pain and fear can make a normally gentle dog defensive. Move slowly, keep your face away from the mouth, and ask another person to control doors, carry supplies, or call the clinic. Do not hug, corner, or suddenly reach over the dog.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not muzzle automatically
A muzzle can reduce bite risk in some situations, but it can be dangerous if the dog has breathing difficulty, is vomiting, is unconscious, or has a facial injury. Ask the veterinarian whether restraint is appropriate. Never use a muzzle that prevents panting in a dog that is struggling to breathe, and never leave a muzzled dog unattended.
Contain bleeding without delaying travel
If the clinic tells you to apply first aid, use clean cloth or gauze with steady, gentle pressure on external bleeding. Do not repeatedly lift the material to check the wound; add more layers if it soaks through. Do not remove an object embedded in the body. If pressure cannot control the bleeding, tell the clinic while arranging immediate transport.
Keep the dog warm, quiet, and confined
Prevent wandering, stairs, jumping, and unnecessary handling. A blanket can provide warmth, but avoid overheating a dog that is panting heavily. Keep children and other animals away. Do not offer food or water unless the veterinary team says it is safe, because anesthesia or certain conditions may make feeding hazardous.

5. Move a small dog safely
For a small dog, a carrier with the top removed is often safer than forcing the dog through a narrow front door. If the carrier cannot be opened from above, use a sturdy, well-ventilated box that is large enough for the dog to lie without being compressed. Line it with a towel for traction and absorbency, but do not pack it tightly around the body.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Ask the clinic whether the dog should be moved in a particular position.
- Remove the carrier’s top, if possible, before approaching the dog.
- Support the chest and pelvis together, keeping the body as level as you can.
- Lower the dog straight into the carrier or box; do not push it through a small opening.
- Secure the carrier so it cannot slide or tip during the ride, while keeping ventilation unobstructed.
If the dog is conscious and painful, pause whenever it struggles. A second person can steady the carrier and open doors. If the dog may have a neck or back injury, ask the veterinarian for positioning instructions before lifting.
6. Move a large dog or a dog that cannot stand
Get help if at all possible. One person should coordinate the movement and keep the head and neck aligned while others support the front and rear of the body. A blanket, coat, or other strong fabric can help maneuver a large dog a short distance. For a very heavy dog, a rigid board or purpose-built stretcher may be safer than carrying.
- Clear the route to the door and vehicle or pickup point before lifting.
- Place a strong blanket or coat beside the dog, avoiding sudden rolling if the dog is in pain.
- With helpers on both sides, slide or roll the dog onto the fabric only as much as necessary.
- Use the blanket as a sling for a short, controlled move, or transfer the dog onto a rigid, stable surface.
- Keep the head, neck, and spine in a neutral line and prevent the body from twisting.
- Move slowly on a count agreed by everyone. Stop if the dog’s breathing, gum color, or responsiveness worsens.
VCA recommends getting help and using a blanket or coat to maneuver a larger injured dog onto a rigid makeshift stretcher when appropriate. A household blanket or rigid board may be enough; do not delay an emergency to buy a commercial stretcher.
When spinal injury is possible
Suspect a spinal injury after a vehicle strike, significant fall, crushing event, sudden paralysis, or severe neck or back pain. Minimize movement rather than attempting a complicated lift. Support the head and neck, keep the dog’s body aligned, and follow the veterinary team’s instructions. If breathing is compromised, the clinic may prioritize airway management over perfect spinal immobilization; ask what to do while help is coming.

7. Load and travel safely
Tell the driver exactly where the dog will be loaded and whether extra people are needed. Keep a small dog in a secured carrier or ventilated box. A large dog should lie on a stable, non-slip surface, with helpers preventing falls during turns and braking. Never put an injured dog loose in a vehicle, on a passenger’s lap, or in an open truck bed.
- Keep the cabin quiet and maintain comfortable ventilation.
- Do not allow the dog to stand, climb, or put its head out of a window.
- Have one person watch the dog while another navigates or communicates with the clinic.
- Call the clinic again if breathing, consciousness, bleeding, or pain changes en route.
- Go directly to the confirmed destination unless the veterinary team redirects you.
If you are using a taxi or rideshare, ask in advance whether the driver will wait while staff unload the dog. A cloth or waterproof sheet can protect the vehicle, but it must not obstruct breathing or make the dog slide.
8. What to bring and what to report
Bring only what helps the veterinary team act quickly:
- Any medication the dog currently takes, including strength and last dose
- Vaccination or medical records if readily available
- Packaging or a sample of a suspected toxin, without touching hazardous material directly
- Photos of an injury, vomit, plant, label, or accident scene if taking the photo does not delay departure
- A list of allergies, previous illnesses, and the time symptoms started
At arrival, report what happened in chronological order: the event, first sign, changes since then, anything given by mouth or applied to the body, and how the dog was moved. Tell staff about possible bites, exposure to chemicals, or contact with a vehicle even if the wound looks small.

9. Common mistakes that make transport less safe
Waiting for symptoms to “settle”
Collapse, breathing trouble, pale gums, severe weakness, and major trauma can deteriorate quickly. Call the clinic and arrange transport instead of watching for improvement.

Forcing a dog through a carrier door
Pushing or twisting a painful dog can worsen an injury and provoke a bite. Remove the carrier top or use a suitable ventilated box for a small dog.
Lifting a large dog alone
A failed lift can injure both dog and handler. Recruit helpers, clear the route, and use a blanket or rigid support as advised.
Using a muzzle in the wrong situation
Do not muzzle a dog with breathing difficulty, vomiting, unconsciousness, or facial injury unless a veterinarian specifically directs you.
Giving home treatments without veterinary advice
Human painkillers, leftover prescriptions, induced vomiting, and food or drink can worsen some emergencies. Ask before giving anything.
Assuming any “pet-friendly” ride is suitable
A service may accept healthy animals but lack room, restraints, or staff for an injured dog. Describe the condition, size, and loading needs before booking.
10. A phone-and-door checklist
Use this short checklist when time is tight:
- Call the veterinarian or emergency hospital and state the symptoms, injury, and lack of a car.
- Write down the confirmed destination, urgency, and any handling instructions.
- Call a friend, family member, neighbour, animal ambulance, pet taxi, or verified animal-accepting taxi or rideshare.
- Confirm the service accepts this dog and can manage its size, condition, and loading needs.
- Keep the dog confined, quiet, and away from your face; use a muzzle only if the veterinarian says it is safe.
- Use a top-opening carrier or ventilated box for a small dog; use several helpers and a blanket or rigid support for a large dog.
- Minimize movement and keep the head, neck, and spine aligned when trauma could involve the back.
- Bring medication information and toxin packaging, but do not delay departure to collect nonessential items.
- Call ahead if the dog worsens or the estimated arrival time changes.
What to do if no service is immediately available
Tell the veterinary hospital that you are still seeking transport and ask whether it can recommend a local responder, arrange staff assistance, or direct you to another facility. Contact several trusted people simultaneously rather than waiting for one response. If the dog is in immediate danger, keep the clinic updated while you work through the available options; the veterinary team can help you decide which compromise is safest.
After you arrive
Follow the clinic’s instructions before unloading. Let trained staff take over when possible, especially for a dog with suspected spinal injury, breathing difficulty, or severe pain. Give a concise handoff: what happened, when it happened, what you observed, what was given, and how the dog was transported. Then answer questions and allow the team to examine the dog without further home treatment.
