To get dog urine smell out of carpet, blot up as much urine as possible, rinse with cool water, and blot or extract the moisture. For odor that remains, use a carpet-compatible enzymatic cleaner labeled for pet urine, following its directions and testing it in a hidden area first. Avoid scrubbing and steam-cleaning the urine spot; if the smell persists, urine may remain in the carpet backing or padding and a professional cleaner may be needed.
What you’ll need
- Paper towels or a clean white cloth
- Cool water
- A pet-urine enzymatic cleaner labeled as suitable for your carpet
- A wet vacuum, if available
Check the carpet-care instructions and test cleaning solutions in an inconspicuous spot before treating the stain.
Trick 1: Blot fresh urine—don’t scrub
- Press paper towels or a clean white cloth into the fresh spot to absorb urine.
- Replace the towels or cloth as they become wet, and continue blotting.
- Do not rub or scrub: it can damage carpet fibers and texture.
Acting promptly makes odor treatment easier. For more detail, see the American Kennel Club’s dog-urine guidance.
Trick 2: Rinse with cool water and extract
- Rinse the spot with clean cool water.
- Blot the moisture with a clean white cloth or use a wet vacuum to extract it.
- Repeat as needed to remove residue without spreading it or leaving it in the carpet.
Do not use steam or heat on a urine spot. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) advises against steam-cleaning urine spots because heat can set the stain and smell. Keep pets away from the wet area until it dries, as the ASPCA advises.

The CRI’s technical bulletin on pet urine and carpet notes that urine can affect carpet backing and dyes. Some dye changes may appear later, and some stains may not be removable.

Trick 4: Treat old spots carefully and escalate deep odor
For dried urine, the CRI recommends pretesting a cleaning solution, applying a small amount to a white cloth, gently blotting from the edges toward the center, then rinsing with cold water and blotting dry. Follow the carpet and cleaner manufacturer’s instructions where they differ.
The CRI’s dry-urine guidance lists a solution of 1/4 teaspoon liquid dishwashing detergent per cup of lukewarm water, followed by thorough rinsing. It also lists one cup of white vinegar per two cups of water after the detergent step. These are general spot-removal instructions, not a guarantee for every carpet fiber, dye, backing, or old urine deposit. Pretest first and rinse thoroughly.

Fresh versus dried dog urine
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Fresh spot | Blot promptly, rinse with cool water, and blot or wet-vac the moisture. Use a carpet-compatible pet-urine enzymatic cleaner for remaining odor. |
| Dried spot | Pretest, gently blot with an appropriate cleaning solution, rinse, and blot dry. Follow product and carpet instructions. |
| Persistent or returning odor | Consider contamination in the backing or padding and consult a professional cleaner experienced with pet stains. |
What not to do
- Don’t scrub or brush the spot. Blot gently to avoid damaging carpet texture.
- Don’t use a steam cleaner on the urine spot. Heat can set the stain and smell.
- Don’t skip the pretest. Cleaning solutions may affect carpet dyes or materials.
- Don’t leave pets near wet carpet or deodorizing powder. Keep them away until the area is dry and any powder is vacuumed up.
