To get rid of cat smell, find and clean its source: scoop the litter box daily, and clean urine accidents with an enzymatic pet-odor cleanser. Air fresheners may cover an odor briefly, but they do not remove its cause. If your cat has started eliminating outside the box—or keeps doing it—arrange a veterinary check.
Find the source before trying to mask the odor
Check the litter box first, then look for urine or waste on nearby floors, rugs, furniture, and other surfaces your cat can reach. A persistent smell often means there is still a source to clean. Fragrance may temporarily cover it, but the guidance from the ASPCA and Humane Society focuses on removing waste, cleaning accidents, and making the litter box acceptable to the cat—not on scent products as a fix.

Clean cat urine with an enzymatic cleanser
For a urine accident, use an enzymatic cleanser labeled for pet odors and suitable for the affected surface. Follow its directions for application and drying; a product intended for pet urine is the relevant choice, but the available guidance does not establish one brand or formula as best.
The ASPCA recommends cleaning accidents thoroughly with an enzymatic cleanser designed to neutralize pet odors. Do not use an ammonia-based cleaner on the accident: urine contains ammonia, and the ASPCA warns that ammonia cleaner could attract the cat to urinate in the same spot again. Read the ASPCA’s litter-box guidance.

Keep pets away while the area dries
Use cleaners according to their labels and keep your cat away from the treated area until it is dry. The ASPCA says most cleaning products are safe around pets when used as directed; enzyme-based cleaners tend to cause mild stomach upset if ingested. If you suspect your cat has been exposed to or swallowed a cleaner, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 in the U.S. See the ASPCA’s household-product safety guidance.
Keep routine litter-box odor under control
- Scoop waste at least once a day and remove it promptly.
- Keep the box somewhere accessible to your cat.
- Use unscented litter if your cat dislikes perfumed products; some cats may reject perfumed litter or an enclosed box, so pay attention to your cat’s behavior rather than assuming every cat has the same preference.
- Wash the box weekly with warm water and unscented soap, baking soda, or no soap, and replace the litter completely. Avoid ammonia, deodorants, and scents when cleaning the box.
These recommendations come from the ASPCA’s advice for litter-box problems, its general cat-care guidance, and the Humane Society’s cat-care tips.

When your cat pees outside the box, look beyond the smell
A new or repeated elimination problem is not just an odor issue. Possible causes include a medical problem, conflict, dislike of the litter or box, or difficulty reaching the box. Arrange a veterinary examination to rule out medical issues and discuss whether the behavior could be urine marking. Do not punish your cat for accidents; seek qualified veterinary behavior advice if the problem continues or may be stress-related.

Make the box setup easier to use
When addressing box problems, the ASPCA recommends one litter box per cat plus one extra. Keep boxes in accessible locations and scoop at least daily. Consider whether your cat accepts the box style and litter: the Humane Society notes that some cats may refuse enclosed boxes or dislike perfumed litter. A change in setup should fit your cat’s needs rather than follow a one-size-fits-all rule.
