To get rid of fleas on a cat, use a flea treatment labeled for cats with veterinary guidance, treat other pets in the household with products suited to each animal, and clean the places your pets spend time. A flea comb can help you spot fleas, but combing alone will not control an established infestation. These seven practical steps work together; they are not a universal veterinary protocol, and not every product or step is right for every cat.
1. Check your cat for fleas and flea dirt
Comb your cat’s coat with a fine-toothed flea comb, paying attention to areas where fleas may be easier to spot. The comb can collect adult fleas and flea dirt, which looks like small dark specks. To check suspected flea dirt, place it on a wet towel: the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) says it turns red. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises putting collected fleas in soapy water.

A veterinarian can assess a suspected infestation using your cat’s history and physical examination, and may use skin testing. If your cat is scratching but you cannot find fleas, ask a veterinarian rather than assuming fleas are the cause. Flea products come in different forms, including topical treatments, oral products, and collars. The right choice depends on the individual cat and the current product label. Ask your veterinarian which option is suitable, and check the label for species, age and weight eligibility, application instructions, and any precautions before use.

Do not improvise a dose, combine pesticide products, or substitute a home remedy for a cat-labeled treatment. CAPC flea guidelines; Cornell Feline Health Center.
3. Treat every pet in the household appropriately
CAPC recommends treating every pet in the home to control fleas. That does not mean using the same product on every animal: select a product labeled for each pet’s species and follow its instructions. If you are unsure how to coordinate treatments for cats and other animals, ask your veterinarian.

4. Vacuum frequently and thoroughly
Vacuum the areas where your cat spends time, including floors and furnishings, as part of environmental control. Cornell describes meticulous vacuuming as a practical measure alongside treatment of the cat. Vacuuming supports a flea-control plan; it does not replace an appropriate treatment for the cat or other pets. Cornell Feline Health Center.
5. Wash pet bedding and address the rest of the environment
Wash your cat’s bedding and clean other areas where pets rest or spend time. Fleas can persist in the environment, so treating only the cat may leave room for reinfestation. If you are considering a pesticide for indoor or outdoor areas, follow its label and get veterinary guidance; do not apply a product to a pet or space in a way its label does not allow. CAPC flea guidelines; EPA guidance.

6. Keep up prevention and monitor for reinfestation
After the immediate problem is addressed, continue a prevention plan and watch for renewed flea signs. CAPC recommends year-round, lifelong flea control for cats. Your veterinarian can help select an approach that fits your cat; follow the product’s current label for its application schedule rather than relying on a general interval.
7. Get veterinary help when the infestation or symptoms are serious
Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat has severe scratching, wounds, signs of infection, weakness, or a heavy flea burden. Kittens with heavy infestations are particularly vulnerable to anemia. Do not respond to persistent fleas or worsening skin problems by increasing doses or layering products without veterinary direction. Cornell Feline Health Center.

Do not use a dog flea product on a cat unless the product label specifically allows that use. Some products that are safe for dogs are not appropriate for cats, and exposure to wet medication can be dangerous. The EPA advises using a flea and tick product only on the animal specified by its label. If a cat has had contact with a dog’s flea treatment, contact a veterinarian for advice.
