To freeze a running or jumping dog, start with a fast shutter speed—try 1/1000 second—then use continuous autofocus (AF-C), animal-eye detection if available, and burst shooting. If the photo is still soft, check whether the blur comes from movement or missed focus: the fix for one may not solve the other.
Start with a fast shutter speed
A camera can focus accurately and still record a blurred dog if the shutter stays open too long. Sony’s animal-photography examples show a sharp image at 1/800 second and motion blur at 1/100 second; Sony recommends 1/500 second or faster for animal action. For a dog running toward you or jumping, try 1/1000 second as a practical starting point, then go faster if the face, paws, or ears still blur. The faster setting is a general starting recommendation, not a manufacturer-prescribed universal value.
Use shutter-priority mode, usually marked S or Tv, to choose the shutter speed while the camera selects an aperture. If you are comfortable setting exposure yourself, use manual exposure with Auto ISO so the camera can raise sensitivity as light changes. Nikon Professional Services recommends a 1/500-second minimum shutter speed with Auto ISO for active dogs and cats in its documented camera setup. Camera controls and behavior vary by model.
In dim light, raise ISO to preserve your chosen shutter speed rather than letting the camera slow it until the dog blurs. The trade-off is increased image noise at higher ISO. Sony’s action example also uses 1/1250 second to freeze water, illustrating that fast movement may call for a faster shutter than the baseline guidance.

Keep focus tracking the dog
Set autofocus to continuous servo: AF-C on Sony and Nikon cameras, with different labels on some other brands. This lets the camera update focus as the dog changes distance. Turn on animal or eye detection if your camera offers it, but check the result rather than assuming the eye is in focus.
Eye detection can struggle when the dog’s face is small, obscured, moving excessively, or poorly lit; similar colors around the eye and face can also reduce detection performance, according to Nikon. Menu names and feature performance depend on the camera model and firmware.

Choose a focus area for the scene
A wider area gives the camera more room to keep an unpredictable dog within its focus region. Sony’s a6000-era guidance recommends a wide or zone area for animals. A smaller area can be more useful when the camera might focus on something in front of the dog instead.
- Clear view and erratic movement: Try wide-area or zone AF.
- Branches, fencing, or other foreground obstacles: Try a smaller area or single-point AF, placing it over the dog. Nikon’s sports guidance recommends single-point AF when an obstacle could attract focus.
These are starting choices, not universal rules. If the camera keeps focusing on the background or an obstacle, narrow the area; if the dog repeatedly leaves the active region, try widening it.

Use burst shooting and anticipate the moment
Select continuous drive or burst mode. Start tracking the dog or half-press the shutter to focus before the action reaches its peak, then take a short sequence around the moment you want. A burst gives you several chances to catch a sharp expression or stride; it does not compensate for a shutter speed that is too slow or focus that is on the wrong subject.

Frame the action and check the result
When practical, get near the dog’s eye level, keep its face visible, and leave space in the frame in the direction it is moving. A clean background makes the subject easier to distinguish. Favor brighter light when you can; it helps the camera maintain a fast shutter speed without relying as heavily on high ISO.

Review a few frames at a magnified view. If the dog is sharply focused but its movement is smeared, raise shutter speed. If the background is sharp but the dog is not, adjust autofocus tracking or the focus area. If the whole image looks soft, check camera movement and whether the shutter speed is sufficient for both the dog’s motion and your own handholding.

Sony’s animal-photography support page is based on a6000-era guidance, while Nikon’s active-animal shutter recommendation is documented for a Z 7/Z 6 setup; its sports focus-area guidance uses older DSLR controls. The useful principles—fast shutter, continuous focus, and an area suited to the scene—apply broadly, but menu labels, detection features, and performance vary across cameras. Neither manufacturer’s examples guarantee a particular success rate or a single best setting for every dog and lighting condition.
