The safest way to water a pig is to provide continuous access to clean, palatable drinking water through a working drinker that every animal can reach. Match the drinker, placement and flow to the pigs’ age, size and production stage; keep a separate drinking point when a wet-dry feeder or liquid-feeding system is present; inspect automatic equipment at least daily; and test private or newly changed sources with qualified help.

Water that looks clear is not automatically safe. A dependable setup must also prevent contamination, blocked access and competition, and it needs a backup plan for interruptions. The figures below are guidance rather than a universal legal standard, so apply the rules for your jurisdiction and housing system.

What safe pig watering requires

International animal-welfare guidance says pigs should receive adequate drinkable water that meets their physiological needs and is free from contaminants hazardous to health. The UK code of practice specifies continuous access to sufficient fresh drinking water for pigs older than two weeks. In practice, that means water must be available throughout the day, not only when feed is delivered.

Availability has three parts:

  • Reach: every pig, including a subordinate, sick or injured animal, must be able to get to a drinker.
  • Delivery: the device must release enough water at a rate the pigs can use without undue effort or competition.
  • Condition: water and the delivery equipment must remain hygienic and free of hazardous contamination.

Assess the volume, flow, delivery method, accessibility, likely increases in demand during hot weather or illness, and the hygiene of the complete system. A drinker that works for one group may be unsuitable after pigs grow, are regrouped or begin lactating.

How much water does a pig need?

Water demand changes with body weight, age, pregnancy, lactation, feed and environmental conditions. The following figures are from the UK Defra code of practice and are a planning guide, not a universal requirement or a substitute for local law.

Pig category UK guidance for daily water intake How to use the figure
Newly weaned pigs 1.0–1.5 litres per day Use the higher end when conditions or health increase demand.
Pigs up to 20 kg 1.5–2.0 litres per day Reassess as body weight and group size change.
Pigs at 20–40 kg 2.0–5.0 litres per day The broad range reflects changing size and management conditions.
Finishing pigs up to 100 kg 5.0–6.0 litres per day Do not treat this as a fixed maximum in hot weather or illness.
Pre-service or in-pig sows and gilts 5.0–8.0 litres per day Provide access without competition from other pigs.
Lactating sows 15–30 litres per day Lactation can create the greatest demand in the table.
Boars 5.0–8.0 litres per day Check that the drinker remains accessible to the individual boar.

These are UK code values and should be labelled as such when used in records or staff instructions. Other jurisdictions may set different figures, and the amount a pig drinks can rise with heat, illness, dry feed or other management factors. If consumption suddenly changes, investigate the water system and consult a veterinarian when an animal appears unwell.

Flow matters as well as daily volume

A bucket can contain enough water for a group and still fail if pigs cannot obtain it quickly enough. The UK code gives suggested minimum nipple-flow rates ranging from 0.3 litres per minute for newly weaned pigs to 2.0 litres per minute for sows and boars. Those are code guidance figures, not universal engineering specifications. Test the actual outlet in the pen and select a setting appropriate to the animals using it.

Very low flow can lengthen drinking time and increase queuing. Excessive flow can create splashing, wet flooring and contamination. Adjust the system so pigs can drink normally while the pen stays as dry and clean as the housing design allows.

Choose a drinker pigs can use

Nipple and bowl drinkers are both covered by livestock-welfare guidance. The right choice depends on the pigs, pen design, water pressure and how easily staff can inspect and clean the equipment. Compare each option against the same five questions: can every pig reach it, is the flow suitable, can it be kept clean, can staff check it easily, and is there a backup if it fails?

Nipple drinkers

A nipple drinker releases water when a pig activates the valve. Set its height and orientation for the pigs in that pen, and verify that the valve opens reliably. Young pigs may need a lower or differently positioned outlet than larger animals. As pigs grow, recheck access rather than assuming the original setting remains suitable.

Measure the delivered flow at the outlet, not only at the pump or pipe. A blocked filter, kinked line, low pressure or mineral buildup can reduce flow even when the supply tank is full.

Bowl drinkers

A bowl makes water visible and can be straightforward to check, but standing water and feed or manure contamination must be managed. Position the bowl where pigs can approach it without being trapped or pushed away, and keep the surrounding area from becoming persistently wet. Inspect the bowl itself as well as the incoming line.

Multiple drinkers and separate access

Number and placement should allow pigs to drink without undue competition. Watch the pen after introducing pigs or changing equipment: a dominant animal, a narrow passage or a drinker beside a busy feeding point can block access for others. Provide a separate drinking point when a liquid-feeding system or wet-dry feeder is used. The UK code specifically warns that a wet-dry feeder connection must not be counted as the only drinking supply because pigs at the feeder can obstruct it.

Set up fresh water step by step

  1. Identify the users. Record the pigs’ age, approximate weight, number, pregnancy or lactation status and any special needs. A newly weaned group and a lactating sow do not have the same demand or suitable flow.
  2. Map access. Walk the pen and identify where each pig can stand, turn and drink. Check likely access for a subordinate pig and for an animal that is weak, injured or reluctant to cross a busy area.
  3. Select and position the drinker. Choose a nipple, bowl or another approved delivery method that fits the housing. Set the height and orientation for the current group, leaving enough approach space to limit pushing and queuing.
  4. Test the outlet. Activate every nipple or fill every bowl. Confirm that water is fresh, the flow is steady and the device does not leak continuously. If you measure flow, record the result and the pigs for which the setting is intended.
  5. Flush and inspect the line. Remove visible sediment or debris according to the equipment maker’s procedure. Check valves, filters, connectors, tanks and hoses for blockage, leaks or damage.
  6. Provide an independent drinking point. If feed is delivered through a wet-dry feeder or liquid system, install or retain a separate source that pigs can reach when the feeder is occupied.
  7. Protect the source. Keep storage tanks, hoses and access points protected from manure, chemicals and other contaminants. Do not add treatment chemicals unless they are appropriate for the system and approved for the intended use.
  8. Make a failure plan. Decide how staff will supply water if a pump, float, pipe or power source fails, and keep the necessary containers or connection ready. The backup must be able to reach the pigs, not merely exist in storage.
  9. Observe the group. After installation or adjustment, watch pigs drink. Look for repeated queuing, fighting, pigs unable to activate a nipple, or animals avoiding the outlet. Correct the cause before relying on the setup.

Keep water clean and the equipment working

Clean, palatable water is a management task, not a one-time installation decision. Victoria’s guidance says automatic watering systems should be checked daily. A practical inspection should include the source, tank or header, pipework, filters, valves, nipples or bowls and the floor around each drinker.

Daily inspection points

  • Activate each nipple and confirm that water flows; check that bowls refill and are not empty, overflowing or fouled.
  • Look for leaks, blocked outlets, damaged fittings, unusual pressure changes and wet areas that suggest a fault.
  • Check that no gate, partition, bedding, feed or other object prevents a pig from approaching.
  • Observe whether all pigs can drink, rather than checking only that one outlet works.
  • Record faults and the time they were corrected, especially in larger units with multiple rooms or water circuits.

Inspect more often when weather is hot, animals are ill, groups have just been moved, or demand is otherwise elevated. A system that passed yesterday’s check can fail after a valve sticks or a line becomes blocked.

Cleaning and contamination control

Remove feed, manure, algae, sediment and other visible contamination using a cleaning method suitable for the drinker and water system. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions for disassembly and any approved sanitation product, and prevent cleaning chemicals from reaching pigs until the system has been thoroughly rinsed and is safe to use.

Keep drinking points away from obvious manure accumulation and repair persistent leaks that turn the pen into a contaminated wet area. Palatability matters: an odour, taste or temperature change can discourage drinking even when water is technically present.

Assess wells and other non-mains sources

Mains water is not the only possible source, but a private well, spring, hauled supply or newly altered source requires a suitability assessment. The UK code calls for assessing non-mains sources and arranging appropriate regular testing. Victoria advises testing a new piggery or new water source for mineral content and microbiological contamination, with advice from a qualified testing laboratory or adviser.

Ontario’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness recommends annual water-quality testing for pigs (2025 guidance). Treat that as an Ontario recommendation, not a rule that automatically applies elsewhere.

What to do when a source is new or changed

  1. Identify the source and any recent change, such as a new well, flood, construction work, storage tank or altered plumbing.
  2. Ask a qualified laboratory or livestock-water adviser which samples and tests fit the source and the pigs’ use.
  3. Test for the mineral and microbiological factors the adviser specifies; do not rely on colour, odour or visual clarity alone.
  4. Keep the laboratory report with the date, sample location and interpretation, and act on any recommendation before making the source the routine supply.
  5. Repeat testing at the interval required by local guidance, the laboratory’s advice or a change in source conditions.

If results are abnormal or uncertain, obtain professional interpretation. Do not assume that a household water-treatment method is suitable for pigs or that a clear sample is free of contaminants hazardous to animal health.

Plan for interruptions and emergencies

Water interruption can become urgent quickly, particularly for lactating sows, pigs in hot conditions and animals already unwell. A contingency plan should name who checks the system, where replacement water comes from, how it is transported and how pigs will access it while repairs are under way.

  • Keep a serviceable backup container or connection that can deliver drinking water, not just wash-down water.
  • Know how to isolate a leaking line without removing water from the rest of the building.
  • Check tanks, pumps and power-dependent components after outages or maintenance.
  • When contamination is suspected, stop using the affected source and obtain qualified advice on safe replacement water and system cleaning.
  • Document the outage, the affected pens, the temporary supply and the corrective action.

After restoring the system, verify flow at every outlet and watch the pigs drink. Do not assume that pressure has returned uniformly throughout the building.

Recognize access and dehydration problems

Water-related trouble often appears first as a group-management problem: pigs queue for one outlet, a smaller pig is repeatedly displaced, a bowl is empty, or the floor around a drinker is wet while the device delivers little water. Treat these observations as prompts to inspect the system immediately.

The sources used for this guide do not establish an individual diagnosis or treatment protocol. A pig that appears weak, dehydrated, unable to drink, or otherwise ill should be assessed promptly by a veterinarian. Continue offering safe, accessible water while arranging professional help, unless a veterinarian directs otherwise.

Apply the rules for your jurisdiction

Welfare codes differ by location. The UK code’s requirement for continuous access for pigs over two weeks old, its intake figures and its nipple-flow suggestions are UK guidance. Ontario’s annual testing recommendation is specific to that province’s advice, and Victoria’s daily automatic-system check comes from Victorian guidance. Use the code, regulations and veterinary or livestock adviser applicable to your farm’s jurisdiction rather than presenting any one table as universal law.

Regardless of location, the practical standard is consistent: pigs need drinkable water that meets their physiological needs, remains free of hazardous contamination, and can be reached and consumed by every animal in the group.

Printable water-safety checklist

  • Every pig has continuous access to a separate drinking supply.
  • The source is clean, palatable and protected from contamination.
  • Drinker type, height, number, placement and flow fit the current pigs.
  • Animals that are subordinate, sick or injured can reach water.
  • A wet-dry feeder or liquid-feeding connection is not the sole drinking point.
  • Automatic systems are checked daily, with more frequent checks when demand rises.
  • Private or newly changed sources have been assessed and tested with qualified help.
  • Testing records, maintenance actions and faults are documented.
  • A workable backup supply is ready for equipment failure or contamination.
  • A veterinarian is contacted when a pig appears ill or dehydrated.
