Make your puppy’s first bath gentle, brief, and predictable: prepare everything first, let the puppy get used to the bathing area, use lukewarm water and puppy-appropriate dog shampoo, rinse thoroughly, and dry your puppy fully. For a very young or unwell puppy—or if skin needs or treatments make shampoo choice uncertain—ask your veterinarian before bathing.

Before you start: prepare the space and supplies

Gather towels, a washcloth, and shampoo formulated for dogs that is appropriate for your puppy’s age and needs. Keep supplies within reach so you do not have to leave the puppy unattended. A nonslip surface can help your puppy feel steadier.

If the tub or shower is unfamiliar, let your puppy investigate it while it is empty and dry before bath time. Move slowly and speak calmly. Treats and praise can help build a positive association with the bathing area. VCA Animal Hospitals describes bathing as something that should be a relaxing experience, and recommends getting puppies comfortable with the bathing area.

How to give a puppy its first bath

  1. Start gently. If your puppy is very young, a warm, damp washcloth may be enough to clean a small dirty area. For a bath, begin only when the puppy is settled and you have everything ready.
  2. Use lukewarm water. Wet the coat with a gentle flow, not a forceful spray. Keep water away from the eyes, nose, and ear canals.
  3. Apply puppy-appropriate shampoo carefully. Follow the product directions and work gently over the coat, avoiding the face. Use a washcloth to clean the face rather than pouring water or shampoo over it.
  4. Rinse until the coat is free of product. Shampoo left behind may irritate the skin, so rinse thoroughly while continuing to keep water out of the face and ears.
  5. Dry your puppy and keep them warm. Use towels to absorb water and dry the coat fully. Keep the puppy in a warm, comfortable place as they dry.

These steps reflect general guidance from the American Kennel Club’s puppy-bathing guide, the AKC’s shampoo guidance, the ASPCA’s dog-grooming tips, and VCA’s puppy hygiene guidance.

What shampoo is safe for a puppy?

Choose a shampoo made for dogs and suitable for puppies; human shampoo is not a substitute. Product suitability can depend on your puppy’s age, skin, and any topical treatment they use. If your puppy has a skin problem, is receiving a topical medication, or you are unsure which product is appropriate, ask your veterinarian before shampooing. The AKC and ASPCA both advise using dog shampoo and getting veterinary advice when needed.

How old should a puppy be before its first bath?

There is no universal minimum bathing age established by the guidance cited here. The AKC puppy-bathing guide says a warm washcloth may be sufficient for very young puppies and suggests introducing shampoo and conditioner once a puppy is at least three months old. That is the AKC guide’s advice, not a universal veterinary cutoff. VCA recommends approved puppy shampoo but does not state a universal minimum age. For a very young puppy, or one that is unwell, check with your veterinarian about whether and how to bathe them.

How often should you bathe a puppy?

Recommendations differ, so do not treat one interval as right for every puppy. The AKC puppy guide suggests monthly bathing; the ASPCA recommends bathing at least once every three months, with more frequent bathing potentially needed for dogs that spend substantial time outdoors or have skin problems. Your puppy’s coat, activity, and skin needs matter; ask your veterinarian for advice if skin concerns are part of the question.
