A Biewer Terrier is easiest to keep comfortable when grooming is routine rather than an occasional rescue job. Plan on daily brushing or combing for a long coat, bathe about weekly when the dog gets dirty, and use conservative trims on the paws, feet, ear tips, and sanitary areas. The breed has a long, straight, silky single coat with no undercoat, so missed tangles can tighten quickly. A shorter maintenance cut is also a legitimate choice if you do not want to preserve a floor-length outline.
What makes a Biewer Terrier’s coat different
The Biewer Terrier’s coat is long, straight and silky, and it has no undercoat. That single-coat structure does not make grooming optional: loose hairs and friction still form knots, especially where hair rubs against the body or collects around the ears and legs. The Biewer Terrier Club of America (BTCA) standard describes a long coat and allows the body hair to be trimmed to floor length for ease of movement. “Floor length” is a coat-length option, not a requirement that every companion dog be kept in a show-style outline.

Breed-care organizations converge on frequent maintenance. The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) gives daily brushing or combing as its breed-level advice, while the American Kennel Club describes daily or every-other-day grooming for a full long coat. The practical baseline for a long-coated pet is therefore a short daily session, with extra attention whenever the coat gets wet or dirty.
Where tangles usually start
Run your fingers over friction points each day before you pick up a brush. Behind the ears, beneath the neck, at the “armpits,” and where the legs meet the body are common trouble spots. The Biewer Club de France identifies these areas in its care advice; they are useful inspection points, not a substitute for checking the whole dog. A mat that feels small today can become tight and painful as the surrounding hair twists.

Set up the right tools
Use tools that separate hair without scraping the skin or snapping the silky strands. The BTCA’s grooming guidance recommends a pin brush with longer pins and no small balls on the tips, plus a long-toothed metal comb. It also advises a light mixture of conditioner and water so the coat is not brushed completely dry. A fine-toothed flea comb can be useful for the hair beneath the eyes, where debris collects, but it is not a replacement for the larger comb.
| Tool or supply | How to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Pin brush with unballed pins | Work through small sections of coat from the ends toward the skin. | Ball tips can pull and break the coat, according to the BTCA. |
| Long-toothed metal comb | Check each section after brushing and find knots the brush passed over. | If the comb will not pass through, the section is not finished. |
| Light conditioning spray | Use a dilute conditioner-and-water mixture to lightly dampen the section before brushing. | Do not saturate the coat; the aim is slip, not a wet bath. |
| Dog-formulated shampoo and conditioner | Clean and condition during a bath, following the product’s dilution directions. | Human shampoo can leave a dog’s skin dry, itchy or flaky; PetMD recommends dog-friendly products. |
| Towels and a non-slip bathing setup | Keep everything within reach before the dog gets wet. | A wet puppy can slip or jump, so never leave one unattended on a counter or table. |
Have treats, a stable surface and good lighting ready before you start. Short, calm sessions are safer than holding a restless dog until the coat is finished.
Daily brushing: a section-by-section routine
Brush or comb a long-coated Biewer every day. If your dog has a shorter maintenance cut, you may finish faster, but daily inspection still catches debris and new knots before they become a grooming problem.

- Inspect first. Feel behind the ears, under the neck, around the legs and through the furnishings. Separate any obvious knot with your fingers rather than dragging a brush through it.
- Lightly mist the section. Spray the conditioner-and-water mixture so the hair has some slip. The BTCA states: “Never brush a Biewer Terrier when it is completely dry due to this will damage the coat.” This is the club’s wording and recommendation; follow the same principle by avoiding forceful brushing on dry hair.
- Divide the coat into small sections. Start at a rear leg or another quiet area. Lift the upper hair out of the way and work on a narrow layer close to the skin, then release another layer.
- Brush from the ends upward. Use the pin brush with gentle strokes, beginning at the tips and gradually moving toward the roots. Support the hair near the skin with your free hand so a snag does not pull the skin.
- Comb to verify. Pass the long-toothed metal comb through the entire section, from skin to ends. The BTCA warns that knots missed by the brush can appear during combing; stop and isolate the knot instead of forcing the comb.
- Repeat around the body. Cover the chest, neck, sides, legs, tail and the hair behind each ear. Finish with a quick whole-body hand check and reward calm cooperation.
How to handle a small knot
Hold the hair above the knot to keep tension off the skin. Use your fingers to tease the outermost strands apart, adding a little conditioning spray as needed. Brush only the loosened portion, then test with the comb. Work in brief passes; repeated pulling makes a dog resent grooming and can break the coat. If the knot is tight against the skin, large, or spreading into a mat, stop and arrange professional help rather than turning a routine session into a painful de-matting session.
When brushing is not enough
A coat can look smooth on top while hiding a felted layer underneath. The comb test is your quality check. If it cannot reach the skin and slide through every section, the dog is still tangled. Mats tighten over time and may be painful to remove, so do not postpone a difficult area for several days.
Bathing: weekly when dirty, not on autopilot
The BTCA and CKC present weekly bathing as a useful breed-care routine when needed to keep the coat clean and manageable. The BTCA specifically says a dirty Biewer may be bathed weekly. Treat that as practical grooming guidance, not a medical prescription: a dog that stays clean may need baths less often, while mud, urine, feces or an oily coat may require an earlier wash.

Before the bath
- Brush and comb out loose tangles first. Water can tighten existing knots.
- Put dog shampoo, dog conditioner, towels and a non-slip mat within reach.
- Use lukewarm water and a secure basin or tub. Keep a hand on a puppy and never leave it alone on a counter or table.
- Plan how you will keep shampoo away from the eyes. A tearless dog shampoo is appropriate around the head, as the BTCA advises.
Washing steps
- Wet the coat thoroughly. Long hair can repel water on the surface, so take time to reach the skin without spraying directly into the face or ears.
- Apply dog-formulated shampoo. Massage in the direction of hair growth rather than scrubbing the coat into tangles. Follow the bottle’s dilution and contact instructions.
- Rinse completely. Move your fingers through the coat while rinsing until no slippery or foamy residue remains. The BTCA emphasizes careful rinsing after shampooing and conditioning.
- Condition and rinse again. Apply a dog conditioner if the product calls for it, then rinse thoroughly. Residue can weigh down the silky coat and irritate skin.
- Blot and dry calmly. Wrap the dog in a towel and press rather than vigorously rubbing. Keep the dog secure until the coat is dry and combable, then check the high-friction areas again.
Do not substitute human shampoo. PetMD notes that human formulas may cause dry, itchy or flaky skin in dogs and recommends dog-friendly shampoo and conditioner. If bathing repeatedly triggers redness, persistent scratching or another skin change, ask a veterinarian whether the product or bathing frequency should change.
Trimming: routine maintenance versus a new style
Home trimming should be limited to areas that need hygiene or safe movement. The BTCA grooming page calls out the hair under the paw pads, the feet, the upper third of the ears and hair around the rectum. The BTCA standard says feet should be trimmed neatly and the hair around the anus trimmed. The CKC’s breed interview also lists paw pads, ear tips, private areas and feet as tasks an owner can address.
Maintenance areas
- Paw pads and feet: Keep excess hair from bunching under the pads or obscuring the foot’s neat outline. Work only where you can clearly see the skin and stop if the dog is moving.
- Upper ear tips: Remove only the overgrowth identified in the breed-care guidance. Ears are delicate and easy to nick, so do not improvise a deep ear trim.
- Sanitary area: Keep hair around the rectum and private areas clean and manageable. If fecal material is stuck in a mat, have a groomer remove it safely rather than pulling.
These sources support limited maintenance trims, not a universal schedule or a detailed clipper tutorial. They do not establish blade numbers, clipper settings, scissor angles or a single correct length. If you are unsure how to expose the skin safely, use a professional groomer.

Choosing between a long coat and a shorter cut
A shorter cut can reduce the amount of coat you must brush at home. PetMD notes that a professional groomer can cut the coat short for this purpose, while also stressing that brushing and bathing remain necessary. The BTCA standard separately permits a floor-length body trim for ease of movement. Neither source requires one particular companion-dog style.
| Consideration | Long or floor-length outline | Shorter maintenance cut |
|---|---|---|
| Brushing demand | Daily brushing or combing is the practical baseline; the AKC describes daily or every-other-day grooming for a full coat. | Usually less hair to work through, but inspect and brush regularly so the remaining coat does not mat. |
| Tangle risk | More length means more opportunities for friction, debris and hidden knots. | Shorter hair can be easier to keep clear, but legs, ears and sanitary areas still need checking. |
| Breed outline | Maintains the long appearance described by the standard, including a floor-length option. | Prioritizes convenience; a particular short style is not prescribed by the cited standards. |
| Who should do the cut | Routine pad, foot, ear-tip and sanitary tidying may be manageable with confidence. | A substantial change in length is best planned with a professional groomer. |
There is no controlled study showing exactly how much time one style saves. The difference depends on coat length, texture, lifestyle and the dog’s tolerance for grooming. Choose the length you can maintain consistently, not the length that creates the most work between appointments.

|---|---|---|
| Every day for a long coat | Light conditioning mist, pin-brush sections, then metal-comb check. | The comb reaches the skin and passes through without catching. |

| As growth requires | Conservative trimming of pads, feet, upper ear tips and sanitary hair. | Hair no longer interferes with clean movement or hygiene, without changing the whole style. |
| Whenever a style change is wanted | Book a professional groomer for a shorter cut or substantial reshaping. | The groomer understands the desired length and the dog’s tolerance. |
Common problems and how to respond
The coat mats immediately after bathing
Most often, tangles were present before washing or the coat was rubbed aggressively while wet. Brush and comb before the next bath, use the light conditioning mixture during detangling, and blot rather than scrub. If the comb cannot pass through after drying, do not keep pulling; ask a groomer to assess the mat.
Your dog fights the brush
Reduce the session to one small section and reward stillness after each few strokes. Check that pin tips are not scraping the skin and that you are not brushing dry hair. Start with easy areas and leave sensitive feet or ears for later. A groomer can demonstrate handling if resistance continues.
You find a tight mat against the skin
Do not yank it, soak it and hope it falls out, or cut blindly into it. Skin can be pulled into a mat, and a frightened dog can move suddenly. Stop home work and use a qualified groomer; seek veterinary advice if the skin underneath is red, swollen, bleeding or painful.
The dog is dirty again a few days after bathing
Spot-cleaning may be more appropriate than repeating a full bath immediately. Remove the source of dirt, brush once the coat is dry enough to handle safely, and reassess the dog’s normal bathing interval. Weekly bathing is a breed-care option when the dog gets dirty, not an obligation to bathe on a fixed day regardless of coat condition.
When professional grooming is the safer choice
Arrange professional help when the coat is severely matted, the dog cannot remain still for work around the feet or ears, or you want a substantial reduction in length. The available breed guidance does not provide a universal clipper setting or step-by-step home haircut method, so copying a generic clipper tutorial can produce an uneven cut or an injury. Tell the groomer whether you want to preserve a long outline or maintain a shorter companion cut, and mention any areas the dog protects.
At home, success is not measured by how long the coat is. It is measured by a combable, clean coat, comfortable skin and a dog that can cooperate with the next session. Daily inspection, gentle detangling, need-based weekly bathing and limited maintenance trimming cover the routine supported by the BTCA, CKC, AKC and PetMD guidance.
