How to Handle a Bee Hive in Your Yard This Spring

A bee cluster in the yard may be a temporary swarm or a colony in a cavity. Keep people and pets away, avoid disturbing the bees, and contact appropriate local help.

If you find what looks like a bee hive in your yard, keep children and pets away, give the bees a wide berth, and do not touch, spray, shake, trap, or try to remove them. A visible cluster may be a temporary swarm, while bees repeatedly entering a cavity may indicate an established colony. Leave identification and removal to an appropriate local beekeeper or qualified removal provider.

What to do right away

  1. Keep people and animals away. Close off the area or choose another route so children, pets, passersby, and livestock do not approach the bees.
  2. Do not disturb the bees. Do not spray them, shake a branch or object they are clustered on, block an opening, or try to capture or remove them. Iowa State University Extension advises staying back, and Texas A&M Honey Bee Lab says not to disturb a swarm or colony.
  3. Contact local help. For a cluster that may be a swarm, ask a local beekeeper or extension office whether someone collects swarms. If bees are entering a wall, shed, or other structure—or are near a heavily used area—ask your local extension office or relevant authorities how to find a qualified removal provider. Recommendations and provider categories vary by location.
  4. Plan for a known sting allergy. Keep anyone with a serious bee-sting allergy away from the site and follow the emergency plan provided by their clinician. Texas A&M recommends discussing a sting kit with a doctor for people who know they are allergic; that is not a substitute for individualized medical advice.

Is it a swarm or an established colony?

People often call any visible group of bees a hive, but the situation may be a temporary swarm, a colony nesting in a cavity, or bees associated with a managed hive. Appearance alone is not a reliable way for a homeowner to determine whether it is safe to approach.

A temporary swarm

A honey bee swarm forms when part of a colony leaves to establish a new one. Swarms may cluster on a tree limb, shrub, or other object while scout bees look for a nest site. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach reports that a swarm may contain several hundred to several thousand worker bees. Its article, authored by Donald Lewis, was last reviewed in May 2023: What to Do When You See a Honey Bee Swarm.

If a cluster is safely away from people and animals, leave it alone while arranging local advice. Swarms may move on; Iowa State says they can remain clustered from an hour to a few days, but there is no dependable departure time to expect.

Bees using a structure or cavity

Repeated bee traffic into and out of the same opening can indicate a nest in a wall, shed, tree cavity, or another enclosed space. A group that looks like a swarm may also be a newly established colony. UF/IFAS notes that honey bees defending a colony can be defensive. Do not inspect an opening at close range or attempt to determine the nest’s location yourself; ask qualified local help to assess it.

When to wait and when to call

What you observe Safer next step
A cluster is in a low-traffic spot, away from people and animals Keep your distance, leave it undisturbed, and contact a local beekeeper or extension office for swarm guidance.
Bees are close to a path or place used by children, pets, or livestock Keep people and animals out of the area and promptly ask local authorities, extension staff, or a qualified removal provider what response is appropriate.
Bees repeatedly enter a wall, shed, or other structure Do not block the entrance or disturb the site. Ask local extension staff or relevant authorities how to find a qualified provider for a colony in a structure.

Local rules and the kinds of providers available differ. For example, UF/IFAS describes registered beekeepers or trained pest-control operators in Florida. Texas A&M recommends a professional bee-removal service or pest-control operator and suggests contacting the state beekeepers association outside Texas. These are regional examples, not universal licensing requirements.

Preventing future nesting without disturbing active bees

Once there is no active bee activity at an opening—and after getting appropriate local advice—consider whether suitable openings should be screened. Texas A&M Honey Bee Lab recommends 1/8-inch hardware cloth for specified potential nesting openings and advises checking for bee activity during spring through fall. Possible nesting locations include cavities in trees and fences, sheds, garages, and building voids.

Do not reach into a cavity or use noisy equipment near suspected bee activity. Screening must suit the particular opening and comply with local building and ventilation requirements; hardware cloth is a prevention material, not a way to handle an active swarm or colony.
