Yes—you can use collected dog fur to make a small needle-felted pet replica. The fur needs to be clean and dry, and it may not felt exactly like wool, so results depend on the coat and the design. The project below explains what to gather, how to build a simple 3D figure, and when a wool-only kit or custom maker may be a better fit.
What to know before you start
Dog fur can be felted into a small sculpture, but it is not interchangeable with sheep’s wool. In her Make: project, Brookelynn Morris describes it as “Well, not exactly like wool, but close enough!” That is a practical project observation, not a controlled comparison, and it does not establish that every coat or species will felt equally well.
Think of the first attempt as a recognizable miniature rather than a guaranteed exact portrait. A basic body shape is a manageable starting point; the face, markings and proportions are harder to capture and take practice.
Gather clean fur and the right tools
Prepare the fur
Brush your dog and save the loose fibers as grooming continues. Pick out dirt and debris, then keep the fur clean and dry until you use it. Fur quantity depends on the sculpture: Make: estimates about five large, dense handfuls for its project, while a 2026 specialist tutorial says roughly two handfuls is enough to get started. These are estimates for different projects, not a universal requirement.

Set up your work area
- Felting needle: A medium-gauge needle is one option for a small sculpture. Needles are sharp; work deliberately and keep fingers clear of the point.
- Foam pad or suitable felting mat: Place the work on this surface so the needle can pass through the fibers without striking a tabletop.
- Scissors: Useful for trimming fibers and shaping details.
- Reference photos: Choose clear views of your pet, especially the face, ears and distinctive markings.
- Optional materials: Core wool can help build a form, while glass or other craft eyes, black or brown wool, and pipe cleaner or wire may be used for features or support. Whether to add them depends on your design.
Build a simple 3D pet figure
The specialist tutorial’s approach is to make the basic form first and add the surface coat afterward. Follow the instructions that come with your needle and materials, and keep the needle moving straight into the work rather than levering it sideways.
- Make a compact body core. Gather the fur—or optional core wool—into the rough shape of the body. Repeatedly poke the fibers with the needle on the foam pad to bind and firm them. Work gradually; a small, dense form is easier to handle than loose fibers.
- Shape and attach the head. Form a separate head, then felt it to the body. Check the proportions against your reference photos before adding details.
- Add the face and ears. Build the muzzle and ears with small amounts of fiber. Compare eye spacing, ear shape and facial markings with the photos as you work. These details have a large effect on whether the figure looks like your individual pet.
- Add the coat. Lay small tufts of loose fur over the surface and attach them with light pokes. The tutorial advises not felting these tufts completely flat; retaining some texture helps create a coat-like finish.
- Refine carefully. Trim stray fibers with scissors and adjust the outline in small increments. Stop to compare the sculpture with the reference rather than adding detail for its own sake.
Felting needles can puncture skin. Craftsy’s 2D cat-portrait tutorial specifically warns that its size 40 triangle needle can cause a serious puncture. That tutorial uses wool felt and batting for a flat portrait, not a pet-fur 3D sculpture; its materials and method should not be mistaken for the project above.

A separate miniature Schnauzer-head project from Ashford uses a pet photo, 36-, 38- and 40-gauge needles, glass eyes and a foam or rice mat. It is classified as experienced beginner to early intermediate, a useful reminder that even a small likeness can involve more than a first-time craft project.

If likeness matters more than the making process, ask a custom studio directly whether it accepts supplied fur and how it uses it. Wool Felted Pet states that actual pet fur can be incorporated on request, but that is this maker’s policy, not a standard across studios. The maker also cautions that screen differences, wool texture and technical limits mean a 100% exact match may not be possible. Ask what photos are needed, whether you can review the design, and what revisions—if any—the commission includes.
