To get rid of garden moles, first confirm that moles—not voles—are causing the damage. Moles leave raised soil ridges and mounds; when their tunneling is causing unacceptable disruption, university extension guidance most consistently supports trapping an active runway. If damage is minor, waiting may be reasonable. Grub treatments, sonic devices, and household remedies are not reliable fixes.
How to tell moles from voles
Moles are insect-eating mammals, not rodents, and generally do not eat plants. Look for shallow, raised ridges where a mole has tunneled near the surface, along with mounds of soil pushed up from deeper tunnels. UF/IFAS describes mole mounds as saucer-sized, with holes roughly 2–4 inches across; those measurements describe the signs in its guidance and may not fit every yard. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions: Moles
Voles are rodents. They can travel through mole tunnels and injure plants by eating or gnawing roots, bulbs, seeds, or stems. Clipped vegetation and visible surface runways are clues to vole activity rather than proof that moles are eating your plants. University of Maryland Extension: Moles
Decide whether the damage calls for control
Mole tunneling can disrupt roots and dry turf, but it also aerates and mixes soil. Moles eat earthworms, insect larvae, and other soil invertebrates, including some garden pests. If the disturbance is limited or appears seasonal, pressing the soil back down and waiting can be a reasonable choice; Maryland Extension notes that activity may stop on its own in some cases. How to trap an active mole runway
- Find a tunnel that is still in use. Press down several sections of a suspected runway and check them the next day. A section pushed back up is active and is a better trap location than a mound or an inactive, meandering surface tunnel. Penn State Extension: Moles
- Set a trap on the active run. Choose a relatively straight section and place the trap in line with the runway, following the directions for that specific trap. Do not set it on the mound itself. UC Statewide IPM Program: Moles
- Plan for a lethal trap. UF/IFAS notes that most mole traps are lethal. Before setting one, understand its operation and plan for safe handling and disposal in accordance with its instructions and local requirements. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions: Moles
- Check and adjust as needed. Trapping takes patience and persistence; if a trap is not working, Iowa State says moving it may be necessary. Follow the trap label rather than relying on a single setup rule for every design. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach: How do I get rid of moles in my yard?
Compare the main control options
| Option | Best fit | What to expect | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trapping | Active mole tunnels across a lawn or garden | The most consistently supported method for removing active moles in the cited extension guidance. | Requires correct placement, patience, and persistence; many traps are lethal. Follow the trap instructions and check local rules. Penn State Extension |
| Buried hardware cloth or sheet metal | A small garden bed or other limited area | Can deter moles from entering a protected space. | Whole-yard exclusion is impractical. Installation dimensions differ among university guides, so consult local extension guidance for design specifics. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions Penn State Extension |
| Castor-oil repellents | People considering a repellent rather than removal | Evidence is mixed: the sources report differing findings. | Do not count on reliable or lasting control. Use any product only as its label directs. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach UC Statewide IPM Program |
| Sonic or vibration devices | No situation in which dependable control is established by these sources | Penn State and UC IPM report that these devices have not been proven effective. | Do not treat a device as a reliable alternative to trapping. Penn State Extension UC Statewide IPM Program |
| Grub treatment, poison bait, or fumigation | Not a dependable mole-control plan | Grubs are only part of a mole’s diet; baits often fail because moles primarily eat invertebrates, and fumigants are often ineffective. | Insecticides do not control earthworms and may be inefficient or harmful. Never use pesticides outside their labels. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Penn State Extension |
Why common quick fixes disappoint
- Removing grubs will not remove all mole food. Moles also eat earthworms and other soil invertebrates, so treating grubs does not necessarily make them leave. Iowa State says insecticides do not control earthworms; UF/IFAS cautions that insecticide use can be inefficient or harmful. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions
- Household remedies lack reliable support. Iowa State and UC IPM do not find dependable evidence for methods such as chewing gum or household irritants. Avoid putting hazardous materials into burrows. UC Statewide IPM Program
- Poison bait and fumigation are poor bets. A diet centered on invertebrates makes many baits unattractive, and Penn State says fumigants are often ineffective and can pose risks. Pesticides must be used only as their labels direct. Penn State Extension
Check local rules before trapping or hiring help
Rules for trapping, relocation, and professional wildlife control can vary by location; the cited guidance does not establish one nationwide rule. Check with your local wildlife authority before trapping or relocating an animal, and verify any applicable licensing requirements before hiring a wildlife-control professional. Follow product labels and local requirements.
