Help a dog settle into a new home by making the first days safe, quiet, and predictable: prepare a low-traffic retreat, keep familiar routines, let the dog choose when to explore, and add new experiences gradually. There is no reliable deadline for feeling at home; pace the plan to the individual dog, whether it is a puppy, an adopted adult, or a familiar dog adjusting after a move.
Prepare the home before the dog arrives
Set up a quiet, low-traffic home base where the dog can rest without being approached constantly. A dog-proof room, pen, or crate may work, depending on the dog’s comfort with confinement and your ability to supervise. Provide water, familiar bedding or a blanket, and a few safe toys. Cornell recommends a secure quiet room during a move, and the ASPCA advises keeping pets in a closed quiet room or with a familiar caregiver while doors are open and movers are coming and going (Cornell; ASPCA).
- Secure doors, gates, and exits so the dog cannot slip out during arrival or unpacking.
- Put away electrical cords, chemicals, medicines, small objects, and anything unsafe to chew or swallow.
- Have a leash and properly fitted collar or harness ready for bathroom trips and supervised movement.
- Agree who will handle meals, bathroom breaks, walks, rest, and training, and decide on household rules before arrival.
- If the dog will travel in a crate, introduce it positively and gradually before the trip rather than making travel its first crate experience (Cornell).
A familiar dog bed or blanket is a broadly useful comfort item. A safety gate can help manage access, but only use one that is secure and suitable for the dog and home.
Make arrival low-key and let the dog set the pace
Offer a calm bathroom opportunity, then give the dog time to sniff and orient in the home base or a manageable portion of the house. Avoid a crowd, a parade of introductions, or opening every room at once. Wisconsin Humane Society recommends a low-key arrival, exploration at the dog’s pace, and a return to the safe space if the dog appears stressed (Wisconsin Humane Society).

If the dog hides, stays in its bed, or chooses not to greet people, allow that choice. Do not drag it from a hiding place or force contact. Sit nearby quietly, speak gently if helpful, and let the dog initiate interaction. Keep children and visitors from crowding the retreat.
Keep the first days predictable
Where possible, preserve the dog’s familiar meal, bathroom, sleep, and interaction rhythms. Keep outings and visitors limited while it learns the new environment, and make room for plenty of quiet rest. Predictability helps the dog understand what happens next without requiring constant attention or stimulation.

Some dogs hide or eat little at first. AAHA describes the “3-3-3 rule”—three days, three weeks, and three months—as a popular framework for setting expectations, not a scientifically guaranteed adjustment schedule. Dogs vary, and no dog is assured to be fully settled by a particular point. Contact a veterinarian if reduced eating or drinking continues beyond a day or two, or sooner if there is an acute health concern (AAHA).
Expand access and alone time in small steps
Let confidence guide home exploration
Begin with the home base, then offer access to additional rooms as the dog shows comfort. Keep exits secured and supervise exploration so you can prevent chewing, swallowing hazards, or accidental escapes. If the dog retreats or seems overwhelmed, reduce the space and stimulation again rather than coaxing it through.

Practice brief separations
Build alone time gradually. Start with very short absences and increase them only as the dog remains comfortable. A trusted sitter, neighbor, or schedule that keeps someone present can be a better interim option than a long separation. AAHA attributes this advice to dog behavior consultant Emma Judson: “adopted adult dogs need time to explore and build a relationship with their new family consistently over weeks, not days, before being left alone” (AAHA).
Choose a safe area the dog can tolerate
A crate is an option, not a requirement. When positively introduced and comfortable for the dog, a crate can provide a resting place and can be useful for travel, house training, or emergency preparedness. Cornell notes that wire crates are durable and relatively easy to fold for storage, but the right choice depends on the dog and situation (Cornell).

Do not leave a dog confined while it is showing marked distress such as excessive barking or vocalizing, pacing, panting, drooling, or eliminating. Use a pen or dog-proof room if appropriate, arrange supervision, or seek veterinary or qualified training guidance. A room or pen is not automatically safe either: account for escape attempts, chewing or ingestion risks, and whether the dog can be monitored.

When both pets are dogs
When practical, start with a controlled meeting in a neutral area and give the dogs enough distance to remain comfortable. Remove food, valued toys, and other potential competition; supervise continuously. Stiff posture or prolonged staring can signal discomfort. VCA recommends interrupting and separating dogs when signs of unease appear, and keeping them apart when nobody can supervise safely. Feed them separately during early adjustment (VCA).

When the resident pet is a cat
Give the cat a dog-free retreat and use secure separation, such as a barrier, to make early exposure gradual. Do not rely on an earlier successful introduction or a dog’s shelter history as proof that the pairing will be safe in this home. Some dogs with a strong prey instinct may never be safe around cats; seek veterinary behavior guidance if chasing or another serious safety concern arises (VCA; Wisconsin Humane Society).
Adjust the plan to what you observe
Pay attention to eating, drinking, elimination, rest, and the dog’s response to people, spaces, and separation. Hiding or temporary appetite changes can be part of an adjustment, but persistent reduction in food or water intake warrants a veterinarian’s advice. For confinement distress, unsafe interactions, or difficulty with gradual alone time, change the management plan rather than forcing exposure; a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional can help assess the next step.
