Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Stay nearby if your presence helps, and let your dog hide or seek comfort without forcing interaction. Do not punish fearful behavior or give medication or supplements without veterinary guidance.
What to do right away
- Secure your dog first. Frightened dogs may bolt or hurt themselves trying to escape. Check doors, windows, and access to the yard, and make sure your dog’s identification details are current. Once the noise has started, avoid going outside unless necessary. If your dog needs a bathroom break, use a leash even in a fenced yard; Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises, “If you must go outside, keep them on a leash, even in a fenced-in backyard, as a precaution.”
- Set up a familiar refuge. Choose a room your dog already knows, ideally farther from the noise and with few windows. Add familiar bedding and let your dog choose where to settle or hide. Do not pull them out of a hiding place.
- Lower and mask the sound. Close windows and use white noise, television, or music at a comfortable level. Cornell notes that layering two types of sound may help cover the noise, and that calming classical music may reduce stress. These measures can make the environment more manageable, but they are not a guaranteed fix.
- Offer calm company. Stay home if you can, speak and move calmly, and comfort your dog if they seek you out. Cornell warns, “Punishment must never be used because it will only increase your dog’s distress.” Do not scold trembling, barking, pacing, hiding, or other fear responses.
- Offer a distraction only if your dog wants it. You can offer a long-lasting treat in a stuffable dog food toy, but do not insist. A dog who is too frightened to eat should not be pressured.
Should you put a scared dog in a crate?
Use a crate only if your dog already regards it as a safe, comfortable place and can be monitored. VCA veterinary behavior guidance says, “A crate can be a haven for some dogs and can be used for conditioned relaxation.” It also cautions, “However, many dogs panic and could seriously injure themselves if confined during loud noises.” If your dog tries to escape or becomes more distressed in a crate, do not confine them there; use a secure room instead.
How to tell whether fear needs professional help
A brief startle that settles is different from sustained or escalating panic. Possible signs of noise fear include trembling, vocalizing, panting, pacing, drooling, hiding, digging at doors, and attempts to escape. The immediate priority is to prevent injury or escape; contact a veterinarian if the reaction is severe, persists, or is difficult to manage.
VCA Animal Hospitals estimates that one-third of the canine population is affected by noise aversions. Its page does not identify the estimate’s underlying study or year, so treat it as VCA’s estimate rather than a separately verified prevalence figure.

What can help with recurring thunder or fireworks fear?
Ask your veterinarian about a plan tailored to your dog. It may combine environmental support with behavior work, and in some cases veterinarian-directed medication.
Gradual sound training
VCA describes desensitization as gradually increasing sound intensity to help a dog acclimate, and counterconditioning as building a more favorable emotional response to the sound. This work needs to stay gradual and controlled: exposure that is too intense can undo progress or increase fear. If training is not progressing, seek professional help rather than turning up the sound or continuing through visible distress.

Veterinary-directed medication
A veterinarian can discuss whether prescribed anti-anxiety medication is appropriate. Do not give human medication, leftover prescriptions, or therapeutic supplements on your own; VCA cautions that therapeutic products can have side effects or interact with other drugs. For predictable events, Cornell recommends discussing medication in advance, trialing any prescription on a quiet day, and giving it early enough as directed by your veterinarian.

| Option | When it may help | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Familiar quiet room and bedding | When your dog has a room where they already feel safe. | Let the dog choose whether to hide or settle; do not force them into a spot. |
| White noise, television, or music | When reducing or masking some outside sound is possible. | Keep volume comfortable. It supports the environment; it does not guarantee calm. |
| Stuffed food toy or long-lasting treat | When your dog is willing and able to eat. | Skip it if fear has taken away their appetite. |
| Anxiety wrap | VCA names wraps such as ThunderShirt as something some owners may try. | Results are not assured; VCA notes limited evidence for the effectiveness of some wraps. |
| Crate | When it is already a comfortable refuge for this dog and you can monitor them. | A dog that panics in confinement may injure themselves; use a secure room instead. |
