Keep early sessions brief, stop if your dog pulls away, and build toward regular brushing at your dog’s pace. It can take days or weeks to master a step and weeks to months to establish the whole routine.
Before you begin: check that brushing is comfortable
Do not start brushing a mouth that appears painful or inflamed. Contact your veterinarian if your dog has bad breath, bleeding gums, drooling, facial or jaw swelling, or difficulty eating. Brushing inflamed gums can hurt and make a dog more reluctant to accept handling; as the AAHA’s 2019 dental-care guidance puts it, “Brushing teeth with already inflamed gingiva will cause pain and animal aversion.” Dental disease may need professional diagnosis and treatment, not home brushing.
For a healthy, comfortable mouth, choose a quiet place and a time when neither you nor your dog is rushed. A mat or towel can become a familiar signal for the routine. Pick a short cue, such as “teeth time,” and have small rewards ready. The goal at first is not to clean teeth; it is for your dog to feel safe and willing to participate.
Build acceptance one small step at a time
Move forward only while your dog remains relaxed. Reward calm participation after each step, then end the session. If your dog turns away, pulls back, stiffens, or otherwise seems uncomfortable, pause and make the next attempt easier. Do not hold your dog still or force the mouth open. Repeat a comfortable step over multiple sessions before adding a new one.

#1 Best Overall
- DENTAL DISEASE AFFECTS 30% OF DOGS — START BRUSHING EARLY: Dental disease causes daily pain and discomfort, and pets are pros at hiding it. Starting a brushing habit with puppies using this training kit reduces plaque and tartar from a young age.
- COMPLETE PUPPY DENTAL KIT — 3 ITEMS INCLUDED: This kit includes a small-breed sized dog toothbrush, a soft silicone finger toothbrush, and a 0.84 oz tube of vanilla ginger puppy toothpaste — everything needed to start a brushing routine.
- VANILLA GINGER FLAVOR — NEVER USE HUMAN TOOTHPASTE ON DOGS: This toothpaste uses a yummy vanilla ginger flavor for a positive experience. Human toothpastes may contain xylitol which is toxic to dogs — always use pet-specific toothpaste.
- PUPPY TOOTHPASTE INFUSED WITH ARM & HAMMER BAKING SODA: This toothpaste leverages Arm & Hammer Baking Soda to help clean and protect your puppy's teeth and freshen breath. Formulated specifically for puppies and small breed dogs.
- TWO TOOTHBRUSH TYPES FOR EASY TRAINING: Includes a small-breed toothbrush and a soft finger toothbrush that slips over your finger. The finger brush is ideal for puppies just getting used to brushing — gentle and easy to control.
- Pair the cue with calm handling. Say your cue, then briefly bring a hand near your dog’s head. Reward calm behavior. Over time, progress to a gentle touch on the head or muzzle, keeping each contact brief.
- Work up to lip and gum contact. When your dog is comfortable with head and muzzle touches, briefly lift a lip. Reward, then release. Gradually build toward touching the gums with a finger. If this causes your dog to withdraw, go back to a less challenging touch.
- Let your dog taste the toothpaste. Offer a small amount of dog-specific toothpaste on a finger or brush and let your dog sniff or lick it. Cornell’s February 2025 guide recommends repeating this easy introduction over multiple days before attempting to brush.
- Introduce the brush without brushing a full row. Let your dog investigate it, then briefly touch a tooth with the brush and reward. When that is comfortable, add a few gentle strokes on a tooth. Keep early brush sessions short.
- Add teeth and time gradually. As your dog accepts the brush, work on the outside surfaces and add more teeth over successive sessions. Increase duration only while your dog stays comfortable.
There is no deadline for completing these steps. Cornell notes that individual steps may take days or weeks and the overall process can take weeks to months, depending on the dog. A slower pace is preferable to turning brushing into a struggle.
Choose safe, simple equipment
- Toothbrush: Use a soft-bristled pet toothbrush. A small-headed brush may be easier for some dogs. A finger brush is another option if a handled brush is intimidating, but it still requires your dog to accept mouth handling.
- Toothpaste: Use toothpaste made for dogs. Do not use human toothpaste: pets may swallow it, and some ingredients in human products are toxic to them. See AAHA’s home-care guidance and Cornell’s periodontal disease guidance.
Turn brief practice into a regular routine
Once your dog accepts brushing, aim for a regular routine, ideally daily. The AAHA home oral-hygiene guidance recommends daily brushing, and the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) says, “Any brushing activity, used regularly, is better than no brushing activity.” If a full brushing session is not comfortable yet, keep practicing at an easier step rather than forcing completion. Choose a time that fits your household and keep the brush and toothpaste somewhere that makes the habit easy to remember.

Brushing helps remove plaque; it does not remove established calculus or replace veterinary examinations, professional cleaning, or treatment. Cornell’s 2018 veterinary tips say plaque can build up within 12 hours of cleaning. That timing describes plaque buildup, not a prediction that dental disease develops in 12 hours. The same page attributes the practical suggestion of brushing “at least once daily, for just 60 seconds” to licensed veterinary technician Bethany Wright; it is not a required duration for every dog or every training stage.

Do not force mouth handling. Ask your veterinarian about other home-care options and whether they are appropriate for your dog. Cornell lists dental diets, dental chews or treats, water additives, oral gels, and sprays. AAHA and Cornell recommend looking for products accepted by the VOHC where relevant. Check current acceptance and ask your veterinarian to consider your dog’s health and age. These products are alternatives or supplements, not guaranteed equivalents to brushing or professional care.
