How to Help a Dog With Separation Anxiety When You Leave Home

Help a dog cope with your departure by checking for lookalike causes, avoiding panic-triggering absences, and building calm tolerance in small steps.

To help a dog with separation anxiety, first confirm the problem is linked to being alone, then prevent avoidable panic and build tolerance through very short, calm departures. Do not leave a distressed dog to “get used to it”: if even a brief absence triggers panic or practice is making the reaction worse, pause and contact a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist.

Check that being alone is the cause

Barking, destruction, or toileting while you are away can be signs of separation-related distress, but they do not prove separation anxiety. Confinement anxiety, incomplete housetraining, outside noises, and other causes can look similar. AVSAB suggests observing whether the dog shows the same problem outside a crate; a veterinarian can also help assess possible medical contributors. AVSAB’s guidance on lookalike behaviors and the Merck Veterinary Manual overview of dog behavior problems describe why observation matters.

Note what happens around departure cues and during a short absence: when the dog first becomes unsettled, what they do, and whether the response occurs only when confined. If watching requires leaving the dog distressed for a prolonged period, stop rather than extending the absence to gather more evidence.

Reduce absences that trigger panic

While you work on the behavior plan, try to avoid leaving your dog alone longer than they can manage calmly. Repeated anxious episodes can make the response harder to change. Depending on the dog’s comfort and your circumstances, a sitter, dog walker, daycare, boarding, or help from a trusted person may bridge the gap. No single arrangement suits every dog; choose one the dog can tolerate.

This management step does not teach the dog to be alone. It reduces opportunities for panic while you work on gradual training. AVSAB discusses a dog walker as one possible option in its guidance on separation anxiety treatment; veterinary guidance also describes temporary care options.

Build calm independence at home

A predictable routine and a comfortable place to settle can support retraining. Reward your dog for relaxed independent behavior, such as resting on a mat or in a designated relaxation area. Practice settling while you are still at home before expecting the dog to cope with your departure.

Some dogs may enjoy a suitable chew, food enrichment, or puzzle feeder in that space. These are optional activities, not a cure. A dog in panic may not eat or engage with a toy, so do not treat apparent access to enrichment as proof that the absence is comfortable. Choose items the dog can use safely.

Practice departures in tiny, calm steps

Desensitization means introducing departure cues and absences at an intensity low enough to keep the dog calm, then gradually increasing it. Counterconditioning pairs those cues or absences with positive experiences. The aim is to change how the dog feels, not merely to suppress barking or other visible behavior. Use reward-based methods; AVSAB recommends reward-based training for behavior treatment in its public position statements and handouts.

  1. Choose an easy starting point. Begin with an absence so brief your dog remains relaxed; for some dogs, that may mean only a few seconds. If departure cues alone cause distress, start with a tolerable version of those cues rather than going straight to a full departure.
  2. Observe what happens. If possible, use a camera to check whether your dog stays calm after you leave. Video is an observation aid, not a treatment or a required brand of equipment. Merck recommends monitoring simulated absences to help assess whether the dog stays below the anxiety threshold.
  3. Return before distress begins. Keep each practice absence within the dog’s current tolerance. Increase duration only after the current step is comfortable; there is no universal schedule, and progress varies by dog.
  4. If your dog becomes distressed, make the next attempt easier. End the exercise rather than waiting for the dog to stop. Return to a shorter absence or an easier departure cue. Pushing exposure past the dog’s limit can worsen the response.
  5. Get help when progress is not safe or practical. If your dog cannot tolerate even a minimal departure, or reactions are worsening, stop independent departure practice and consult a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist.

VCA and Merck describe short, below-threshold practice and veterinary behavior support when minimal departures are not tolerated. See VCA’s guidance on separation anxiety in dogs and the Merck Veterinary Manual.

Discuss medication and treatment with a veterinarian

A veterinarian can evaluate the dog, consider contributing health issues, and discuss whether medication may help. Veterinary sources describe medication as an adjunct to behavior modification and environmental changes, not a replacement for them. Whether a particular medicine is approved or available depends on location and can change, so do not use a medication, dose, or stopping plan without veterinary direction. VCA explains the role of veterinary assessment and combined treatment in its separation anxiety guidance.

When to seek professional support

  • Even a very brief departure causes distress.
  • Your dog’s reaction is becoming more intense or practice is making it worse.
  • You are unsure whether the behavior is related to separation, confinement, a medical issue, or another trigger.

Start with your veterinarian, who can assess the dog and discuss treatment options. Ask about a veterinary behaviorist if the dog cannot tolerate short absences or needs specialist help with a behavior plan. Avoid continuing exercises that repeatedly provoke panic while waiting for support.
