There is no safe, one-size-fits-all weight target or calorie amount for a Great Pyrenees. Start with your veterinarian, who can assess your dog’s body and muscle condition, set an individual goal, and help you build a measured food-and-activity plan. General canine weight-loss guidance does not establish a special formula for this breed.
Start with a veterinary assessment
Ask your veterinarian to assess body condition score (BCS) and muscle condition score (MCS), review your dog’s health, and set a target weight and daily calorie allowance. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) calls nutritional assessment—including BCS and MCS—the starting point for nutritional care. On the commonly used nine-point BCS scale, a score of 4–5 is considered ideal by Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s summary of AAHA guidance.
Bring the food packaging and a record of what your dog eats. Include measured meal amounts, treats, chews, food used for training, table scraps, toppers, supplements, medications, and any opportunity to eat another pet’s food. AAHA’s assessment approach also considers the dog’s environment, activity, weight, and health history.
Ask for the calorie target, how to divide it among meals, and when to check in. The target should be based on your dog’s ideal weight and adjusted for individual intake and lifestyle—not inferred from a breed-average weight or a general online calculator. AAHA reports a mean intake of 63 ± 10.2 kcal/kg0.75 during a 12-week weight-loss period in dogs; that is a group result cited in its 2021 guidance, not a prescription for an individual Great Pyrenees.

Set portions and account for every extra
Measure the full daily allowance accurately, then budget from it for meals, rewards, chews, and other edible extras. Dr. Aly Cohen, an extension veterinarian at Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center, notes: “Once you determine the amount your dog should eat per feeding, correctly measuring its food is crucial.” A heaping scoop can quietly add calories.
Cornell advises keeping treats to about 10% of daily calories; Merck Veterinary Manual advises less than 10% to help avoid nutrient imbalance. Follow your veterinarian’s specific allowance. An easy way to stay within it is to reserve part of the measured daily food for training rewards rather than adding extra treats.

Ask before changing food or sharply reducing it
Do not simply cut the amount of your dog’s usual maintenance food without veterinary advice. Restricting an ordinary diet too far can leave a dog short of essential nutrients. Your veterinarian may recommend a diet formulated for weight loss, which is designed to provide appropriate nutrition at a reduced calorie intake.
Discuss options in terms of nutritional adequacy at the prescribed calorie level, calories per measured portion, satiety, your dog’s medical needs and acceptance, and whether the response can be monitored. Cornell’s owner guidance mentions around 300 calories per cup as context for a weight-loss diet; it is not a universal requirement or a stand-alone way to choose food.

Add activity gradually and comfortably
Exercise can support weight loss, but it should be part of a plan that also manages food intake. Ask your veterinarian what your dog can comfortably do, especially if mobility is limited or the dog has been inactive. Cornell recommends gradual conditioning and identifies low-impact walking or swimming as possible options. AAHA advises matching activity to current fitness; a veterinary rehabilitation practitioner may help design a suitable plan.
There is no established Great Pyrenees-specific ranking of exercise types for weight loss. Choose an activity based on your dog’s comfort, mobility, fitness, and tolerance for the conditions—not on breed assumptions. Increase duration or intensity gradually rather than expecting an inactive dog to sustain a demanding routine immediately.

Track progress and adjust with your veterinary team
Weigh your dog at least every two weeks and share the results with the veterinary team. Cornell says dogs may safely lose 1–2% of body weight per week; Merck describes about 1% per week as a reasonable goal. These are general guides, not targets to pursue by cutting food more aggressively. The veterinarian can determine whether your dog’s rate is appropriate and adjust the plan.
If weight is falling unusually quickly, contact the veterinary team rather than continuing unchanged; the restriction may be excessive or another concern may need attention. If progress is slower than expected, review portions and extras together and ask whether the calorie target or plan needs adjustment.

Why a health review matters
Excess weight can worsen arthritis and affect other body systems. Veterinary review is particularly important if weight gain is unexplained or movement is difficult, because health and mobility can shape both the plan and the kind of activity that is appropriate.
Cornell notes that each BCS point away from ideal corresponds approximately to 10% of a dog’s current weight. That is a rough scoring aid, not a method for calculating your Great Pyrenees’ target weight; use the veterinarian’s individual assessment instead.
