To earn a kitten’s trust, make it feel safe, keep your visits calm and predictable, reward voluntary approaches, and invite play without forcing contact. Hiding or avoiding touch is communication—not defiance. Let the kitten’s comfort and body language guide the pace.
1. Give your kitten a safe place to retreat
Set up a quiet, kitten-proofed space with a hideaway—a cardboard box or covered bed can work—where your kitten can rest or watch you from a protected spot. A hiding place can help a kitten feel secure, so do not pull it out to socialize it.

2. Be predictable and low-pressure
Visit at regular times, keep interactions short and pleasant, and sit quietly nearby. Speak softly and let your kitten decide whether to approach. If it is too nervous to eat while you are present, leave the food and step away rather than moving closer or insisting it eat near you.

3. Reward small, voluntary steps
Offer a preferred treat or a small amount of food your kitten likes, and reward relaxed behaviors such as looking toward you, moving closer, or choosing to stay nearby. The kitten should control the pace: do not lure it close with food and then force a touch.

4. Use play to connect, then respect signals
A wand toy lets you interact while leaving space between you and your kitten. Begin with slow, small, prey-like movements. If your kitten retreats or seems overwhelmed, stop and give it room. Let your kitten initiate petting where possible. Pause if it becomes tense, walks away, or otherwise signals it has had enough. Relaxed body language and a voluntary approach are more useful signs of progress than a fixed schedule.
How to tell whether your kitten is becoming more comfortable
Look for small choices, not a deadline: your kitten may watch you, remain nearby, approach for food or play, or accept a brief touch. Progress varies from kitten to kitten; there is no established number of days by which a kitten should trust you. Some kittens may never enjoy being held, and trust does not require picking them up.
