Prepare a quiet, safe home base
Before your dog arrives, choose a calm area where it can rest without being in the middle of household traffic. Set out water and comfortable bedding, and make sure the space is free of hazards. A quiet room, a bed in a low-traffic corner or a comfortable crate can all serve as a retreat; a crate is optional, not a requirement. If confinement seems to frighten your dog, do not force it into one.
Secure cords and chewable items, check doors and windows, and use a pet gate if it helps keep the dog in a prepared area. A gate can support gradual exploration, but it does not replace supervision or attention to whether your dog is comfortable. Ask the rescue or shelter about the dog’s usual routine, known sensitivities, health needs and experience with children or other animals. These details can help you make sensible choices about the first days in your home.

Keep the first days calm and predictable
Keep household activity and visitors to a manageable level while your dog gets used to unfamiliar sights, sounds and smells. Use a simple, steady routine and calmly show the dog where to find water, food and its resting place. Let it approach people when it is ready, and allow it to retreat without following or coaxing it out.
ASPCA’s advice is direct: “Don’t force interactions with people or other pets.” That means no required greetings, handling, cuddles or play. Give the dog time and space to watch from a comfortable distance. Early shyness is not enough to define the dog’s lasting personality (ASPCA, Adoption Tips).

Protect rest and supervise children
Make sure the dog’s retreat remains a place where it will not be disturbed. Do not reach for a dog that is resting or try to take away a valued item; VCA advises giving dogs space in these situations (VCA, Moving with Your Dog). Teach children to let the dog rest and to avoid approaching it when it has gone to its safe spot.
Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog, even a dog that seems gentle. The AVMA’s dog-bite prevention guidance emphasizes that any dog can bite, and VCA offers additional advice for managing interactions between children and pets (AVMA, Any Dog Can Bite; VCA, Children and Pets).

Expand access and introduce other pets gradually
When your dog seems at ease in its initial space, let it explore another safe area at a time. Stay nearby and keep newly accessible rooms free of hazards. If the dog seems overwhelmed, give it the option to return to its retreat rather than pushing it to explore further.
For a resident dog, plan introductions that are gradual and managed, with room for each dog to rest separately. Put away especially valuable toys and chews during early interactions to reduce competition over resources. Use the 3-3-3 guideline as a rough expectation, not a deadline
ASPCA presents the 3-3-3 framework as a guideline: it describes adjustment in terms of three days, three weeks and three months. It can help you remember that settling in may be gradual, but it is not a clinical assessment, a measured outcome or a promise that every dog will follow the same schedule. Dogs differ, so respond to the individual animal rather than treating a date on the calendar as a test of progress (ASPCA, Adoption Tips).

Contact a veterinarian if your dog remains very fearful or cannot comfortably share space with household members. If there is growling, snapping or another safety concern, seek help from an experienced, qualified behavior professional as well. Do not punish growling or other warning signals, and do not force contact. Instead, create distance and prevent situations that make the dog feel unsafe while you arrange appropriate guidance.
