Help a newly adopted dog settle by keeping the first days quiet, offering a safe place to rest, and following a predictable routine. Let the dog approach people and explore at their own pace; build up walks, visitors, and introductions gradually. There is no universal settling timetable: some dogs adjust quickly, while others need weeks or months.
Before your dog comes home
Ask the rescue about your dog’s usual food and routine, preferences, veterinary history, and any ongoing health or behaviour needs. Knowing what is familiar can make the first days less disruptive. Prepare a quiet resting spot and the basics: appropriate food, food and water bowls, a bed or blanket, collar and ID tag, lead, toys, and suitable cleaning supplies. A crate is optional, not a requirement.
For the journey, secure your dog in a travel crate or with a suitable harness. A blanket that smells familiar may be reassuring. Some dogs vocalize, toilet, or vomit during travel. Stay patient rather than scolding; if you need to clean up, stop somewhere safe. On arrival, take your dog out to toilet and praise them for going.
Make the first days calm and low-pressure
Give your dog space to settle
Keep the home quiet and limit visitors and exciting outings at first. Allow your dog to explore when ready, without forcing cuddles, greetings, or removal from a hiding place. A comfortable bed in a quiet area, a blanket under a table, or another sheltered spot can work as a retreat. If you offer a crate, leave its door open and let your dog choose whether to enter and leave. Dogs Trust recommends calm, quiet time and interaction at the dog’s own pace (Dogs Trust; RSPCA South Australia).

The reinforced knurled bolts provide added strength compared to traditional wire crates, but due to their collapsible design, they may not be suitable for dogs prone to anxiety or destructive behavior.
Keep early outings familiar
Start with short walks in the same nearby area so your dog can gradually learn the surroundings. Hold off on busy or stimulating destinations such as beaches and dog parks until your dog seems comfortable with everyday life at home. Increase activity and social contact in response to your dog’s behaviour, not to a fixed calendar.
Establish a simple routine
Keep feeding, toilet breaks, walks, play, rest, and bedtime reasonably predictable. If the rescue can tell you what your dog is used to, preserve familiar routines and preferences where practical. Make household rules consistent so the dog is not asked to navigate changing expectations. Accidents or unfamiliar behaviour during adjustment do not, on their own, identify a medical or behavioural cause. The RSPCA puts the value of routine plainly: “Set out a good routine from the beginning – this will help your dog settle in by knowing what’s going to happen and when” (RSPCA, Getting ready for your RSPCA rescue dog).

Build confidence over the following weeks
Let your dog’s comfort guide how quickly you add new experiences. When the dog appears relaxed, you can gradually broaden walks, introduce more of the household, or invite calm visitors. If they seem overwhelmed, reduce the pressure and give them room to rest. Keep a short diary of appetite, drinking, toileting, sleep, preferences, and behaviour; notes can help you spot patterns or changes and explain them clearly to the rescue or veterinarian.
Contact the rescue to ask about post-adoption support if available, especially if you are unsure how to meet a need or the situation is becoming difficult to manage. Adjustment varies by individual, and the familiar “3-3-3 rule” should be treated as an expectations framework, not a promise or research-backed average. The American Animal Hospital Association describes it as a way to think about the first 3 days, 3 weeks, and 3 months—not a schedule every dog follows (AAHA, published February 10, 2026).

Introduce a resident dog gradually
Give both dogs separate places to retreat and keep food, treats, and valued toys out of shared areas at first. If practical, exchange scents before arranging direct contact. The RSPCA recommends gradual, supervised introductions, beginning on neutral ground, rewarding calm behaviour, and pausing or increasing distance if either dog appears overwhelmed (RSPCA Australia).
Continue supervising their time together. Do not leave them alone together until you are confident they are comfortable with one another. If conflict persists, seek advice from your veterinarian or a veterinary behaviourist rather than expecting the dogs to work it out unaided.

Know when to contact a veterinarian or behaviour professional
Register with a local veterinarian and review the dog’s medical history and ongoing care needs. A major change can affect appetite or drinking, but AAHA advises contacting a veterinarian if an initial reluctance to eat or drink persists for more than a day or two. If your dog is unwell or you are worried about a change in their health, contact your veterinarian for individual advice.
House-soiling can have medical causes, so do not assume it is simply a training problem. If you suspect separation-related distress, the ASPCA advises a veterinary assessment to rule out medical causes before behaviour modification. For a tailored behaviour plan, work with an appropriately qualified professional (ASPCA).
