Help your resident dog adjust by preparing separate spaces, introducing the dogs gradually, and giving your dog the choice to retreat. Keep every interaction supervised and brief at first. The goal is safe, calm coexistence—not making your dog entertain or become friends with the foster puppies.
Prepare the home before the puppies arrive
Set up two distinct spaces: a puppy-only area and a retreat where your resident dog can rest without being approached. An exercise pen, gate, or appropriately used crate can help manage access and let the dogs observe one another without direct contact. Keep the resident dog’s familiar resting place available.
Put away high-value toys, chews, and food before shared time, and plan separate feeding locations. Ask the foster organization about the puppies’ health, vaccination schedule, and known exposure to illness. Also consider whether your resident dog is comfortable around puppies and whether any past behavior makes introductions unsafe.
Introduce the dogs in small, low-pressure steps
- Choose space and timing. If practical, begin outdoors or in a neutral area with enough room for either dog to move away. Follow foster-specific advice to introduce resident dogs to the foster puppies one at a time, rather than presenting the whole group at once.
- Let them notice each other. Allow calm observation or a brief sniff; do not insist on a greeting or play. Reward relaxed behavior and give either dog room to disengage.
- Keep the first contact short. Stay close enough to intervene calmly. End the session while both dogs are still comfortable, rather than waiting for one to become overwhelmed.
- Continue behind a barrier indoors. Use the puppy area and resident dog retreat to allow protected observation. Add short supervised contact only if both dogs remain relaxed.
- Build up only at their pace. Offer breaks throughout the day. Increase direct interaction gradually, and return to more separation if either dog seems uncomfortable.
- Separate whenever you cannot actively supervise. This includes overnight and whenever you leave the home. Do not leave the puppies and resident dog together unattended during the adjustment period.
Read both dogs’ body language
Look at the whole interaction, not just whether the dogs are close or wagging their tails. The American Kennel Club describes relaxed expressions and loose, wiggly movement as encouraging signs. Turning away, a tense jaw, a low-carried tail, shaking, or raised hair can signal unease and a need for more distance. If you see these signs, pause and calmly separate the dogs; try again later only if both appear comfortable.

Puppies may repeatedly invite play while their social skills are still developing. Interrupt and redirect a puppy that jumps on, chases, or pesters the adult dog. Your resident dog should not have to tolerate rough attention or take responsibility for teaching the puppies.
A growl can be a warning that a dog needs space. Do not punish the warning; calmly create distance and manage the next interaction more carefully. If a dog is distressed, fearful, or overwhelmed, stop the session rather than trying to push through it.

Protect your resident dog’s routine and choice
Keep up the resident dog’s usual routine as much as possible, including one-on-one attention and uninterrupted rest. Make sure the dog can leave a shared area and reach its retreat without having to pass the puppies. If your dog is not interested in playing, let it decline. Peaceful sharing of a home is a successful outcome even if the dogs never become playmates.
Redirect puppy attention before the adult dog has to repeatedly fend it off. Separate the dogs for rest and quiet time, and keep meals, valued chews, and toys apart to reduce competition.

- A win-win solution: The FXW Dog Playpen is designed to bring a win-win solution to you and your lovely dog. Different from a narrow enclosure cage or kennel, the FXW dog pen provides a spacious semi-open activity area specifically for your dog. Your dog will have fun in its safe and sturdy kingdom. Meanwhile, you can take a real break and be truly relaxed without worrying about your beloved pet. Fun, Relaxation and Well-being is the orientation of the FXW team.
- Unlock your freedom, savor the moment: The stakes are designed with rounded ball tops to protect the dog's claws from injury. The rods are easily inserted into the ground for greater stability and rigidity, which won't collapse when the dog leans against them. Also, the automatic gravity-actioned locking mechanism will ensure you can open and close the door smoothly and reduces the chance of dogs unlocking by themselves. All of this is designed for absolute safety, so you can really relax.
- Super easy to assemble: It won’t take you more than 5 minutes to assemble these portable dog fences as well as pack them away due to the rod-connected design. Meanwhile, panels can be added or removed freely to give you a fully flexible area and arrange the dog pen in any shape you need.
- Multi-scenario use: The FXW dog playpen features a powder coating that will help protect against rust and extend its life, which makes it ideal for RV camping, traveling, or for use in the yard. When used indoors, we recommend placing it on a dog pad or carpet to prevent the rods from scratching the floor, or please try our new floor protectors or dog pee pad for the same purpose.
Adjust health precautions to the puppies’ circumstances
Ask the foster organization or veterinarian what contact is appropriate based on each puppy’s age, vaccination schedule, current health, and possible exposure to infectious disease. Controlled contact with a known, healthy household dog is not the same as meeting unknown dogs or visiting public areas that may be contaminated. Do not apply a fixed separation period to every foster placement; follow the individual program’s instructions and veterinary advice.

| Approach | When it can help | What to manage |
|---|---|---|
| Brief, supervised contact | Both dogs remain relaxed, the resident dog can move away, and the caregiver can stay actively present. | Keep sessions short, remove valued resources, watch both dogs, and end contact if either becomes uneasy. |
| Barrier-assisted coexistence | Either dog needs more space, direct contact is not manageable, or health guidance calls for reduced exposure. | Use a secure gate, exercise pen, or other suitable boundary, and provide separate rest and feeding areas. |
These approaches can be combined: barrier time is useful between short interactions and whenever direct supervision is not possible. A pen, gate, or crate is a management aid, not a guarantee that the dogs are compatible or a substitute for meeting their needs.

When to get professional help
Keep the dogs separated and contact the foster organization if your resident dog has a history of aggression toward puppies, is not accepting them, or you cannot safely manage contact. A qualified trainer or veterinary behavior professional can help assess the situation and plan next steps. Do not try to resolve an unsafe interaction by leaving the dogs together to work it out.
