Contact the shelter promptly, explain what happened during the trial, and follow its return and care instructions. A return can be a major change for a dog, but you cannot know from the return alone exactly how the dog feels or how long adjustment will take. Honest observations give shelter staff the information they need to assess the dog and plan appropriate care.
What to do when the trial ends
- Call or message the shelter as soon as you can. Ask how and when to return the dog and whether the organization can offer support or other options. Return procedures and services vary, so follow the shelter’s instructions rather than arranging a handoff on your own.
- Give a factual account of the stay. Share what the dog ate or avoided, how the dog slept, what activities or interactions went well, what was difficult, and what you tried. Describe specific incidents and circumstances instead of guessing at motives or diagnosing the dog.
- Flag health or safety concerns clearly. Report any injury, notable health change, persistent refusal to eat, or behavior that could put someone at risk. Shelter staff can decide whether veterinary assessment or help from a qualified behavior professional is needed.
- Prepare the return as directed. Ask whether to bring food, medication, records, or familiar items, and how to handle the trip and transfer. Do not assume that an item or activity is appropriate for this dog; check with staff.
Will the dog be sad or traumatized?
You cannot reliably infer a dog’s internal state from the fact of a return. The Tufts Collaborative for Shelter Dogs says, “For most dogs, being relinquished to an animal shelter is a drastic change and a stressful experience.” Separation, confinement, and noise can contribute to stress, and dogs do not all show it the same way. That makes a return worth handling thoughtfully, but it does not establish that you have traumatized the dog.
Possible stress signs include hiding, reduced activity or appetite, vocalizing, destructive or repetitive behavior, and stress-related aggression. These are observations to share with the shelter, not a diagnosis by themselves. A dog may show subtle signs, show different signs, or not display an obvious change.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you about adjustment
Studies describe particular groups of adopters and dogs; they do not predict what will happen to an individual dog after a failed trial. In a 2022 study at one South Carolina shelter, researchers surveyed 132 dog adopters. Twenty-nine dogs were returned within three months, and the median time in the home among those returners was eight days. Those figures describe that study, not a universal return rate or timeline. Two-thirds of surveyed adopters reported behavioral problems after adoption; some measures, including training difficulty and nonsocial fear, decreased over follow-up, but that does not guarantee improvement for any particular dog.

A 2023 follow-up study tracked 99 adopted dogs from five Ohio shelters, collecting owner behavior surveys at 7, 30, 90, and 180 days. Its authors note that a fuller picture of behavior may take weeks or months to emerge as a dog acclimates. This is not a fixed adjustment schedule: it does not mean every dog needs a prescribed number of days, nor does it guarantee that a particular behavior will change.
An interview study of 78 people who had adopted and returned dogs or cats to a Midwestern U.S. shelter found that return reasons often arose after adoption, including behavior and compatibility with other pets or children. A placement that proves unsafe or unsustainable can be a legitimate reason to use the shelter’s return process; sharing what happened can help inform what comes next.

How to support the dog after return
Ask shelter staff what routine and activities fit this dog and the organization’s care plan. A predictable, low-pressure environment may help avoid adding unnecessary demands during a transition. Staff can advise whether familiar objects or activities from the home are safe and useful. Do not force interactions or introduce extra novelty just to try to make the dog settle.
Keep staff informed about changes you observed, including appetite, sleep, activity, and interactions. If a concerning sign appears or persists, the shelter can assess it and determine whether veterinary care or qualified behavior support is appropriate. A stressful transition is not itself a diagnosis, and a single behavior observation should be understood in context.

If another placement is considered
Use the observations from the trial as practical information, not as a verdict on the dog. The shelter can consider the dog’s health and behavior history alongside the prospective household’s circumstances and what support it can provide.
- Household fit: Be candid about resident pets, children, routines, and any safety concerns.
- Manageable care: Discuss the dog’s known needs and whether the household can meet them consistently.
- Supported introductions: Plan introductions to resident pets and children carefully, using the shelter’s guidance rather than rushing contact.
- Ongoing communication: Ask what advice or follow-up the shelter can provide if new questions arise.
The Association of Shelter Veterinarians’ 2022 guidelines say adopters and foster caregivers must receive counseling on “safe, gradual, and controlled introductions of shelter animals to children and resident pets.” That guidance supports individualized preparation; it is not a promise that a later placement will succeed. There is no established number of decompression days that guarantees a good outcome.
