Hiding is often a cat’s way of coping with fear, unfamiliar surroundings, or disturbance. Don’t pull your cat out or punish it for hiding. Instead, provide a quiet place it can retreat to and leave freely, keep daily life predictable, and let the cat choose when to approach. If hiding is a new or persistent change—especially alongside other changes in behavior or health—contact your veterinarian.
Why cats hide
A hidden cat is not necessarily misbehaving. Concealment can be an adaptive response when a cat feels threatened or is in an unfamiliar environment. Hiding alone does not establish that a cat is anxious, in pain, or ill, but it can be one sign that something in the cat’s surroundings or wellbeing has changed.
Make a retreat the cat can choose
Offer a quiet, stable place in a familiar area where your cat can rest undisturbed and come and go voluntarily. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) says, “Every cat needs a safe and secure place where they can retreat to, so they feel protected, or which can be used as a resting area,” in its 2026 Your Cat’s Environmental Needs: Practical Tips for Understanding the Needs of Your Cat and Their Behavior handout (FelineVMA environmental-needs handout).
Examples include a cardboard box, a carrier, a covered cat bed, or a raised perch. These are options, not required purchases: a suitable box you already have may be enough. Where possible, arrange a retreat with more than one way in and out, so the cat is not easily trapped or blocked. FelineVMA’s 2026 handout recommends entry and exit from at least two sides where feasible.

Set up a multi-cat home to reduce competition
In a home with several cats, one cat may avoid a resource or retreat if another can block access. Provide separate, appropriately placed resting, feeding, drinking, toileting, and scratching resources, and make sure each cat can reach them without being challenged.
FelineVMA’s 2026 handout recommends at least as many safe places sized for one cat as there are cats in the household. This is a guideline, not a population statistic; spread the places around rather than making one contested spot serve everyone.

Make interaction predictable and low-pressure
- Let the cat initiate contact. Avoid reaching into its hiding place, cornering it, or asking visitors to approach it.
- Keep familiar routines where you can, and reduce sudden changes in noise, smells, sights, people, and household activity.
- When a change cannot be avoided, introduce it gradually and allow the cat to retreat. Keep interaction positive and suited to the individual cat.
- Do not punish hiding or use aversive methods to make the cat come out. FelineVMA’s environmental guidance favors meeting the cat’s needs and adjusting its surroundings instead.
For a newly adopted or especially shy cat, a small, quiet room can serve as a starting area while it gets used to the home. Allow decompression before expecting social behavior; there is no universal number of minutes or days that every cat needs.

Take notice if your cat starts hiding more than usual, continues to do so, or shows other changes—for example, sleeping more or avoiding contact. Cats may conceal discomfort or illness, and a change in routine behavior can have emotional or health-related causes. Arrange a veterinary assessment rather than trying to diagnose the cause from hiding alone.

If environmental changes are not helping, ask your veterinarian whether further veterinary or qualified behavior support is appropriate.
