To help a feral or extremely shy dog trust people, make human presence predictable and safe, give the dog room to retreat, and reward small steps without forcing contact. Here, “feral” describes a dog with little or no human contact; it does not reveal why the dog behaves this way, and each dog’s history and comfort level differ. There is no universal timetable: look for voluntary choices and growing ease, not a deadline.
Start with safety, space, and a quiet routine
A dog that has just arrived in a home needs time and a low-pressure place to settle before being asked to interact. Set up a quiet, low-traffic room with food, water, bedding, toys, and a comfortable resting option. Keep visitors and outings limited while the dog adjusts. Wisconsin Humane Society recommends allowing at least a week for decompression, but that is its minimum guidance—not a guarantee that every dog will be ready after seven days. (Wisconsin Humane Society)
Build a steady rhythm around meals, rest, and calm household activity. Make the dog’s resting place somewhere people will not disturb it. A crate, gate, or other barrier may help create space if the dog is comfortable with it, but do not make one mandatory if it increases fear. Cornell recommends a safe, structured environment and a predictable routine for fearful dogs. (Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine)
If attaching a leash or handling the dog is too frightening, do not force contact just to take the dog outside. Wisconsin Humane Society suggests arranging a way for the dog to eliminate without requiring that interaction while it settles in. (Wisconsin Humane Society)

Let the dog get used to your presence without pressure
Spend quiet time nearby while allowing the dog to choose whether to engage. Avoid staring, looming over the dog, quick movements, reaching a hand out to sniff, and walking straight toward it. Turn sideways and move on a curve instead of approaching head-on. Let the dog close the distance—or not. Best Friends Animal Society advises allowing shy dogs to approach voluntarily and keeping interactions gentle. (Best Friends Animal Society)
Keep daily life calm and ordinary. If the dog can move freely and safely, you can quietly go about familiar activities rather than making every appearance an attempt to interact. Do not block its exit or corner it to encourage closeness.

Build positive associations at a level the dog can handle
First notice what the dog values. Food is a common reward, but it is not universal. A dog that refuses food around a person may be too worried to eat; do not respond by moving closer or insisting. Increase distance or reduce the intensity of the situation, then try again when the dog can remain comfortable.
When the dog can notice a person without becoming distressed, pair that low-intensity exposure with something it likes. Change only one aspect at a time—for example, distance or duration—and increase exposure gradually while the dog remains at ease. The American Animal Hospital Association describes desensitization as beginning below the level that triggers a response and gradually increasing exposure; counterconditioning pairs the trigger with something the animal likes. It warns that flooding—overwhelming the animal with the feared situation—is not recommended and may worsen distress. (AAHA)

Use small, valued treats to support choice, not to lure the dog into a situation where it may feel trapped. Wisconsin Humane Society recommends tossing tiny pieces away from the person so the dog can take one and retreat, preserving its freedom to choose whether to return. (Wisconsin Humane Society)
Wait for the dog to invite touch
Taking food is not consent to be petted. Wait for the dog to approach voluntarily and solicit attention before trying brief contact. Then pause: if the dog chooses to re-engage, continue gently; if it moves away or does not ask for more, stop. Best Friends recommends brief touch followed by a pause, while Wisconsin Humane Society describes a three-second petting-and-pause routine. These are practical suggestions, not a universal test or rule. (Best Friends Animal Society; Wisconsin Humane Society)

Trust with one household member does not mean the dog will be comfortable with visitors or strangers. Ask new people to give the dog space and avoid reaching, calling it over, or initiating a greeting. Voluntary distance is a better starting point than a forced introduction.

Management and gradual training work together. Choose quieter routes or times, maintain distance from triggers, use visual barriers where appropriate, and ask other people not to approach. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior notes that management helps keep fearful dogs safe while training progresses, and that a bad encounter can set progress back. (AVSAB)
- Do not force greetings, touch, or exposure to crowded places as practice.
- Do not keep the dog in an inescapable situation or punish growling and other fear signals.
- Let the dog retreat; if it becomes distressed, make the situation easier by increasing distance or ending the exposure.
Cornell advises against forcing a dog to confront its fears and warns that punishment may exacerbate fear and contribute to other behavior issues. (Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine)
Know when to involve a veterinarian or behavior professional
Ask a veterinarian about a sudden behavior change or serious anxiety. For complex fear, difficulty managing daily life, or a safety concern, seek a qualified reward-based trainer or veterinary behavior professional who can assess the individual dog and household. Look for relevant experience with fearful dogs, methods that preserve choice and work below the dog’s fear threshold, and a clear safety plan. Online guidance cannot determine whether a particular dog is safe to handle. Best Friends and Wisconsin Humane Society both recommend seeking professional help when fear is severe or difficult to manage. (Best Friends Animal Society; Wisconsin Humane Society)
