How to Help Orangutans Displaced by Forest Fires

Support established teams working on fire response, orangutan care, rehabilitation, and habitat recovery. If you see an orangutan in danger, keep your distance and contact local wildlife authorities or a rescue organization.

The most useful way to help orangutans displaced by forest fires is to support established organizations that work with local wildlife authorities on firefighting, rescue, veterinary care, rehabilitation, and habitat recovery. Donate through an organization’s official channel, direct your gift toward the work you want to support, and leave all contact with wild orangutans to trained teams. If you encounter an orangutan in danger, keep your distance and contact the relevant local wildlife authority or an established rescue organization.

What help is needed when fires displace orangutans?

A fire can leave an orangutan injured, surrounded by smoke, or cut off from safer habitat. The response may involve firefighters, rescuers, veterinarians, caregivers, rehabilitation staff, and people working to protect or restore forest. These are connected but distinct needs: helping with an urgent fire response is not the same as funding an animal’s longer-term care or the recovery of its habitat.

Reports from Indonesian Borneo in September and October 2026 show what a response can involve. On September 13, the Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) and Indonesia’s Natural Resources Conservation Agency, known as BKSDA, rescued Sari, a 20-year-old mother, and her one-month-old daughter, Sara, from a wildfire in West Kotawaringin Regency, Central Kalimantan. OFI reported that its veterinarians found burns on Sari’s hands and feet. In an Associated Press report dated October 10, rescuers had evacuated orangutans found injured, stranded, or surrounded by smoke. The report described a young orangutan named Novita receiving oxygen and intravenous fluids for burns on her hands and feet before transfer to the Nyaru Menteng rehabilitation center.

The Ministry of Forestry’s tally, as reported by the Associated Press on October 10, was more than 270 wild animals in Kalimantan rescued, rehabilitated, or guided to safer habitats. That dated figure covers wild animals generally; it is not a count of orangutans, and it should not be read as an estimate of how many orangutans have been displaced or harmed.

What the reported rescues show—and what they do not

Sari and Sara’s rescue illustrates the role of coordination between an international nonprofit and an Indonesian agency. OFI reported that BKSDA worked with it on the rescue, and that veterinarians assessed Sari’s burns. The account gives a specific example from West Kotawaringin Regency; it should not be taken to mean every fire-affected orangutan is found, rescued, or treated in the same way.

Novita’s reported care shows that rescue and rehabilitation are not a single event. The Associated Press described initial treatment with oxygen and intravenous fluids, followed by transfer to Nyaru Menteng. That sequence provides a practical reason to support both field response and veterinary facilities: an animal may need urgent help at the scene and further care afterward. It does not establish Novita’s eventual outcome, nor does arrival at a rehabilitation center mean that release is certain.

The Ministry tally also needs careful interpretation. “Rescued, rehabilitated, or guided to safer habitats” describes several different actions, and the number combines wild animals rather than counting orangutans alone. It is a dated figure reported on October 10, 2026—not a live count, an estimate of all animals affected, or proof that each animal was permanently safe. Avoid using it to make claims about total orangutans displaced or killed.

Choose the kind of help you want to fund

Before donating, decide whether you want your support to go toward immediate fire response, animal care, rehabilitation, or habitat work. An organization may run more than one kind of program, but the purpose of a particular appeal matters. Read its current official campaign information for how it says donations will be used.

Need What support can cover Example in the sources
Firefighting and prevention Supplies, firefighter hiring, and firefighting equipment upgrades, according to OFI’s fire campaign. A later OFI account names water pumps, hoses, protective gear, and transportation supplies as response needs. OFI’s campaign describes support for fire response. Those named items are organizational needs, not a reader shopping list.
Rescue and veterinary care OFI says donations support medical costs, feeding, housing, and caregivers for orphaned, sick, and injured orangutans. OFI and BKSDA rescued Sari and Sara; veterinarians treated Sari’s burns.
Rehabilitation and return to forest BOS describes rescue, sanctuary rehabilitation, and reintroduction to wild forests for orangutans displaced by human activity or natural disasters. The Associated Press reported that Novita was transferred to Nyaru Menteng after initial treatment. A transfer to a rehabilitation center does not by itself establish that an animal will be released.
Forest protection and restoration OFI lists reforestation and forest protection among its programs. It says restoration requires funding for staff, agronomists, transport, and nurseries. Habitat work addresses conditions that make future displacement more likely; it is different from emergency rescue or treatment.

These categories are useful when comparing appeals because they describe different time horizons and types of work. Firefighting and evacuation address immediate danger. Veterinary care, feeding, housing, and caregiving support animals after they have been found. Rehabilitation may continue beyond the initial emergency, while forest protection and restoration focus on habitat conditions. None substitutes for all the others, and a contribution to one category should not be described as paying for a different one unless the organization says that is how the funds are used.

1. Support an organization’s fire response

If your priority is preventing a fire from spreading or helping response teams reach affected areas, look for an appeal that specifically describes firefighting or fire prevention. OFI’s campaign says donations support supplies, hiring firefighters, and upgrading firefighting equipment. In a later account, OFI identified water pumps, hoses, protective gear, and transportation supplies as needs for its response.

Use those details to understand the kind of work a contribution may support, not as instructions to buy and ship equipment yourself. Fire teams need appropriate gear and supplies coordinated for the site. Unsolicited deliveries may not match local needs, and the sources do not establish a process for readers to send equipment directly. Give through the organization’s official channel and follow its current instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The equipment examples are not a complete specification for what a particular team needs. The published information does not provide model numbers, quantities, delivery addresses, or a standardized list for donors. Nor does it establish that every listed item is needed at every location or at the same time. That is why the practical action is to fund the response through its official channel, rather than to choose equipment independently. If an organization publishes changed priorities or a new appeal, use those current details instead of assuming the needs remain unchanged.

Fire prevention and active response are related, but they are not identical. An appeal that says it supports fire response may cover supplies, staff, or equipment upgrades; another may focus on prevention. Read the description to see which is named. If the wording is broad, do not assume it promises a particular intervention at a particular site.

2. Help pay for rescue and veterinary care

Rescue is only one stage of helping an animal in danger. OFI says donations can support medical costs, feeding, housing, and caregivers for orphaned, sick, and injured orangutans. The 2026 reports illustrate why specialized care matters: Sari had burns, while the Associated Press described Novita receiving oxygen and intravenous fluids before transfer for further care. These cases support funding trained responders and veterinary facilities; they are not a basis for trying to treat an animal yourself.

If an appeal is tied to a named rescue or treatment program, check what the organization says it will fund and whether the gift is restricted to that effort or supports broader work. Do not assume a contribution pays for one specific animal’s treatment unless the organization explicitly says so.

When considering a medical-care appeal, distinguish the services named from outcomes that have not been promised. Funding medical costs, feeding, housing, and caregivers can support care, but it cannot guarantee that an animal will survive, recover fully, or be released. Novita’s reported treatment gives an example of the kind of veterinary support that may be involved; it is not a price list or a standard treatment plan for every orangutan.

The cited campaign information does not give a verified cost per rescue, day of care, or animal. If you need a budget figure before giving, consult the organization’s current official materials or ask it directly. Avoid relying on a dollar amount from an unrelated appeal or calculating a cost for a named animal when the organization has not published one.

3. Fund rehabilitation and possible return to forest

Some rescued orangutans may need continued care rather than an immediate return to the wild. The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS) describes work that includes rescue, rehabilitation in sanctuaries, and reintroduction to wild forests. That sequence takes time; a donation can support the work, but it does not guarantee that a particular orangutan will be released.

Outcomes are assessed individually. The Associated Press report noted that rehabilitation and an animal’s ability to survive in the wild are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. It quoted BOS Foundation chairman Jamartin Sihite saying, of Novita, “We have previously released orangutans missing several fingers and they were still able to survive in the forest, so we remain hopeful that Novita can eventually return to the wild.” His comment expresses hope about one animal, not a general promise that every fire-affected orangutan can be released.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For donors, the distinction between rehabilitation and release matters. A center transfer is an important step in a reported response, but it is not evidence that an individual is already ready for the forest. BOS describes reintroduction as part of broader work; the available information does not set a universal timetable for rehabilitation or criteria that readers can apply to an individual animal. Leave those judgments to the teams assessing and caring for the orangutan.

  • 【Multipurpose Usage】Protect furniture from scratching and pet hair. Cute and lovely paw print design. No pilling, skin-friendly, perfect for the couch, sofa, bed and pet carrier.

It is also possible for different rescued animals to need different paths. The reports identify a mother and infant rescued together, and a separate young orangutan receiving treatment and transfer. They do not establish identical needs or outcomes for those animals. Support the program and its stated work rather than expecting every rescue story to end with an immediate return to the wild.

4. Support habitat protection and restoration

Fire response addresses immediate danger; forest protection and restoration address longer-term habitat needs. OFI lists forest protection and reforestation among its programs and says restoration requires staff, agronomists, transport, and nurseries. Consider this work if you want to support conditions that can reduce future displacement rather than focus only on emergency response.

The pressures on habitat are not limited to fires. WWF’s Sumatran orangutan information describes fire and conversion of forest to oil palm and other agriculture as significant pressures on Sumatran orangutan habitat. This is context about Sumatran habitat, not evidence that the same specific conditions apply to every affected site in Indonesian Borneo. When choosing a habitat program, check its stated geographic focus as well as the work it funds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restoration has its own practical requirements. OFI names staff, agronomists, transport, and nurseries as funding needs. That means habitat recovery is not simply a matter of planting trees: it also requires people and logistical support, according to the organization’s description. The campaign information does not provide a per-hectare price, a promised planting count, or a timeline for a particular restoration project, so do not infer one from the list of needs.

For a reader choosing between urgent and long-term support, the choice is about purpose, not a claim that one kind of work is more valuable. A fire response appeal is oriented toward active danger and response capacity; habitat protection and restoration address forest conditions over a longer period. Check whether an organization’s program actually covers the place and activity you want to support. A Sumatran habitat program and a Central Kalimantan rescue are not interchangeable just because both concern orangutans.

How to decide where to donate

The available information establishes different kinds of work, but it does not provide comparative independent charity ratings or a basis for ranking organizations by cost-effectiveness. Rather than treating one organization as a universal best choice, compare each appeal against your priorities and the location you want to support.

  1. Start with the organization’s own site. Find its current campaign or program page and confirm that it is the official channel before donating.
  2. Match the purpose to your priority. Look for a clear description of whether a gift supports firefighting, rescue and veterinary care, rehabilitation, habitat protection, or restoration.
  3. Check the geographic focus. Confirm whether the work concerns Borneo or Sumatra and, where stated, the relevant local area. A program focused on one island or region should not be treated as a response to every fire.
  4. Look for named local partners and a clear use of funds. OFI’s report on Sari and Sara names BKSDA as a rescue partner. That is a concrete example of a local agency partnership; check the current details of the appeal you are considering rather than assuming every program has the same partners.
  5. Read the appeal’s terms. Check whether the contribution is for a named campaign or broader organizational work, and review any explanation of how funds are used. Campaign descriptions and needs can change.

You can also compare the information each appeal makes explicit: its intended work, the area it covers, whether a local partner is named, and how the organization describes use of funds. These are practical checks, not a scoring system. The cited sources do not establish a universally best organization or show that one appeal accomplishes more per donation than another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No verified cost comparison is available here. OFI identifies categories of need, including supplies, firefighter hiring, equipment upgrades, medical costs, feeding, housing, caregivers, and restoration resources, but the cited material does not give comparable prices for those activities. Do not treat a list of expenses as a published budget, and do not infer that a larger or more specific-sounding amount is necessarily more effective. If exact budget details are important to your decision, look for current information from the organization itself.

If you see an orangutan in danger

Do not approach, feed, capture, or attempt to treat the animal. Move to a safe distance and contact the relevant local wildlife authority or an established rescue organization. Fire zones and smoke can endanger people as well as wildlife, and an untrained intervention can put both the person and the orangutan at greater risk.

The documented responses involve specialist teams and veterinarians, including OFI working with BKSDA in Central Kalimantan. The available sources do not establish one public emergency phone number for every location. Contact details depend on the site and local jurisdiction, so seek the appropriate authority or established organization for where you are rather than relying on a single number for all of Indonesia.

Do not enter a fire zone to search for an animal, attempt to move it, offer food or water, or try to give first aid. A distressed or injured orangutan needs assessment by trained responders, and approaching may expose you to smoke and other fire hazards as well as create further risk for the animal. The safe action is to report what you observed from a safe location and follow directions from local wildlife authorities or an established rescue organization.

If you are not in the affected area, do not travel there to volunteer unless an established organization specifically asks for that kind of help and provides instructions. The cited information identifies rescue and fire response work by specialist teams; it does not describe a general public deployment program. Financial support through an official channel is a practical way to help without adding uncoordinated activity at an emergency site.

What a donation can—and cannot—do

A donation can help fund organizational work such as fire response, animal care, rehabilitation, or habitat programs, according to the appeal’s stated purpose. It cannot guarantee that a particular animal survives, recovers, or returns to the wild. Rescue, treatment, rehabilitation, and release are separate stages, and the outcome for an individual orangutan depends on assessment by the teams responsible for its care.

Current fire conditions and campaign needs are changeable. For the most relevant information, check an organization’s current official appeal before giving; use dated reports for incident details rather than treating them as a live status update.

Likewise, a single reported rescue or official tally should not be mistaken for a complete picture of the fires’ impact. The September 13 OFI account concerns Sari and Sara in West Kotawaringin Regency. The October 10 Associated Press report describes evacuations and treatment and reports a Ministry tally for wild animals in Kalimantan. Each provides a dated snapshot of particular activity, not an all-location inventory of orangutans or a forecast of what will happen next.

When sharing information with others, retain those dates and distinctions. Say that the Ministry tally reported by the Associated Press was more than 270 wild animals in Kalimantan as of October 10, 2026, rather than saying that 270 orangutans were rescued. Describe Novita’s transfer to Nyaru Menteng as a transfer for rehabilitation, not as a confirmed release. Precise wording helps people understand both the urgent need and the limits of what is known about any individual outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I help orangutans affected by fires if I am outside Indonesia?

Support an established organization through its official donation channel. Choose whether you want to fund firefighting, rescue and veterinary care, rehabilitation, or habitat protection, and check the appeal’s geographic focus and stated use of funds. Do not send equipment unless an organization specifically coordinates that need.

Where can I donate to help orangutans after forest fires?

Check the current campaign pages of established organizations such as OFI or BOS, using each organization’s official site. Read whether the appeal covers fire response, animal care, rehabilitation, or habitat work. The cited sources do not provide a basis to rank organizations or compare their cost-effectiveness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I buy and send firefighting equipment or supplies?

Not unless the organization specifically requests and coordinates it. OFI has named water pumps, hoses, protective gear, and transportation supplies as response needs, but those are organizational needs, not a public shopping list. Donate through an official channel and follow current instructions.

What should I do if I see an orangutan near a fire?

Do not approach, feed, capture, or attempt to treat it, and do not enter the fire zone. Keep a safe distance and contact the relevant local wildlife authority or an established rescue organization. There is no single public emergency number established for every location in the cited information.

Will a rescued orangutan be released back into the forest?

Not necessarily. BOS describes a process that may include rescue, sanctuary rehabilitation, and reintroduction, while the Associated Press reported that rehabilitation and ability to survive in the wild are assessed individually. A transfer to a rehabilitation center does not mean release is guaranteed.

How much does it cost to rescue or care for an orangutan?

The cited campaign information does not provide a verified cost per rescue, day of care, or animal. OFI names categories supported by donations, including medical costs, feeding, housing, and caregivers. Check an organization’s current official materials for any budget details it publishes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Help by funding established teams through official channels, choosing clearly described work in the relevant part of Borneo or Sumatra. Fire response, veterinary care, rehabilitation, and habitat recovery serve different needs; none guarantees an individual outcome. If you encounter an orangutan in danger, keep away and contact local wildlife authorities or an established rescue organization.
