To help a cat use a cat tree, make it stable, put it where the cat already spends time, and invite exploration with familiar bedding, treats, or play. Let your cat approach at its own pace; avoid placing it on the tree or punishing it for scratching elsewhere. Cats differ in what they like, and some may prefer another scratching surface or an easier route to a perch.
1. Check that the tree suits your cat
A tree is more inviting when it feels steady and is easy for your cat to use. Check that it does not wobble or tip when touched. For a scratching surface, Cornell recommends a post that stays upright and is tall enough for a full-body stretch: Cornell Feline Health Center’s guidance on scratching.

Look at what your cat already scratches. Some cats prefer vertical surfaces; others scratch horizontally. Texture matters, too. A tree with several levels can offer options, but multiple platforms or a particular height are not requirements for every cat. Choose for your cat’s demonstrated preferences, age, and mobility.

Try placing your cat’s usual blanket or bed on or beside the tree. Familiar bedding may make the area feel more inviting, but it is an optional experiment—not a proven requirement. If your cat ignores it, remove it and try another approach.

3. Put the tree in your cat’s territory
Start near a favorite sleeping spot, a well-used part of the home, or a place where your cat already scratches. A tree tucked away in an unfamiliar corner may be less appealing than one in an area the cat already considers part of its territory.
If you are redirecting scratching, place the tree or a suitable scratcher right beside the chosen spot. Once your cat uses it reliably, you can move it gradually toward a more convenient location. Cornell’s scratching advice and the AAFP behavior toolkit support offering an acceptable alternative near the problem area.

4. Try catnip only if your cat likes it
If your cat responds to catnip, sprinkle a small amount on a platform or nearby scratching surface. Some cats do not respond, so catnip is not necessary and should not be treated as a guaranteed lure. See Merck Veterinary Manual’s overview of normal cat behavior for general context on feline preferences and behavior.
5. Reward voluntary investigation
When your cat sniffs, paws, scratches, or climbs onto the tree, offer something it enjoys: a small treat, its usual food, praise, or petting if it welcomes touch. Give the reward promptly so it follows the behavior you want to encourage. The AAFP toolkit recommends rewarding cats after redirecting them to an appropriate scratcher.

Do not lift or place your cat on the tree to make it use the structure. Let the cat choose whether to approach. Avoid scolding or punishment for scratching elsewhere: punishment can harm the relationship and may provoke fear or aggression. Instead, make an acceptable surface available and reward its use. See Merck Veterinary Manual for guidance on feline behavior and the risks of punishment.
6. Make play an invitation
Use a familiar interactive toy near the tree, then gradually bring play alongside its lower areas or platforms. A dangling toy can invite a cat to investigate without requiring it to climb. Follow the cat’s lead: if it stays on the floor or walks away, do not use the toy to force contact or movement onto the tree.

If your cat still avoids the tree
Check stability, placement, and surface
First consider whether the tree wobbles, sits away from places your cat uses, or has a surface unlike the cat’s preferred scratching material or orientation. Cornell emphasizes matching a scratcher to a cat’s preferences, while Merck Veterinary Manual also identifies factors such as location, height, stability, material, shape, and size. If your cat scratches horizontally, try a horizontal cardboard scratcher or another stable surface in that orientation rather than insisting on a vertical post.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMake access easier for an older or less mobile cat
If your cat seems unable to get onto the tree comfortably, consider a ramp or positioning the tree beside furniture that makes a lower, easier route. Avoid assuming that reluctance alone means your cat is in pain. If climbing or jumping appears difficult, or you notice other changes in movement, ask a veterinarian whether pain or mobility could be involved.

Watch for competition in a multi-cat home
Notice whether another cat blocks access to the tree or contests its use. Merck notes that cats may avoid sharing important resources, and separated resources can help reduce competition. That general guidance does not establish the cause of avoidance in any particular household; observe how your cats interact and consider providing more than one resting or scratching option.
What to expect
Scratching and climbing are normal feline behaviors, but individual cats do not all prefer the same surfaces, locations, or heights. A cat tree can provide a place to perch, rest, play, or scratch, but there is no guarantee that every cat will use one. Give your cat time to explore and adjust the setup according to what it actually chooses.
