To hold a cat properly, lift only when the cat is willing, support both its chest and hindquarters, and keep its body close and steady. If it tenses or tries to get away, lower it gently rather than tightening your grip.
How to tell whether a cat is willing to be picked up
Approach calmly and give the cat a moment to respond. Do not rush in or pick it up if it seems nervous, reluctant, or shows signs of stress. Cats Protection’s guide to picking up a cat advises avoiding a lift when a cat is particularly nervous or displaying anxious body language.

- Approach without rushing. Stay calm and give the cat room to move away.
- Support the chest and front legs. Slide one hand around the chest so it supports the front of the body.
- Support the hindquarters. Use your other hand or arm under the rear end before lifting.
- Lift smoothly and keep the body supported. Hold the cat close enough to keep it secure, without squeezing or letting its body dangle.
- Set the cat down if it resists. Lower it calmly and let it go rather than holding on more tightly.
The key is supporting both ends throughout the lift: do not carry a cat with its weight hanging from the chest alone.

What to do if the cat is nervous
If a cat is reluctant or anxious, do not force a lift. A clean, familiar household towel can be an optional comfort aid for some cats; veterinary handling guidance describes using a loose towel for security. A towel is not a reason to wrap or restrain a cat that is resisting, and no special cat towel is required.
Professional veterinary guidance also supports keeping handling gentle and avoiding heavy restraint. The 2022 AAFP/ISFM Cat Friendly Veterinary Interaction Guidelines state that cats show signs of fear-anxiety during heavy restraint and scruffing, and that these practices should be avoided to safeguard feline welfare. That is guidance for feline-friendly veterinary interactions, not an instruction for owners to perform veterinary restraint.

Never lift or carry a cat by the scruff
Do not pick up a cat by the loose skin at the back of its neck. Cats Protection’s 2025 behavior guide says not to scruff a cat or use clips for restraint. Support the body instead, and stop if the cat does not want to be held.
