Introduce a rescue pet gradually: start with a secure, quiet space apart from resident animals, then progress through scent and barrier-based exposure to supervised contact only when everyone appears comfortable. Don’t force a greeting or follow a fixed deadline. The clearest step-by-step guidance available here is for cat-to-cat introductions; pairings involving dogs or other species need more individualized caution.

Prepare your home before the rescue pet arrives

Ask the shelter or rescue what is known about the newcomer’s behavior and whether it may suit your household. Adoption organizations can help assess a match. Set up a quiet, secure area where the new animal can retreat, and plan how to prevent accidental access to resident pets. A pet gate or baby gate can help control access, but choose a barrier that is secure for the animals and workable in your space. Keep resident pets’ toys separate at first. For an adopted pet, arrange veterinary care shortly after adoption; the ASPCA’s general preventive-care advice does not set a special introduction schedule.

If you are fostering through the ASPCA, its guidance asks that resident animals be current on vaccinations and that the foster animal have a separate area. This is program guidance, not a replacement for advice from your veterinarian.

How do I introduce a new rescue cat to my resident cat?

For cats, use a series of small, reversible steps. Move forward only when both cats can handle the current stage calmly; if they cannot, return to more distance or separation.

1. Let the new cat settle separately

Bring the newcomer to its prepared room and allow it to adjust without a forced greeting. The ASPCA notes that the first days in a new home can be overwhelming and advises patience, routine, time, and space. Let resident cats approach the room boundary only while they remain calm.

2. Exchange scents and allow controlled exploration

Swap blankets or pillows that carry each cat’s scent. The Humane Society describes keeping the newcomer in a small area, such as a bathroom, for up to a week as one example—not a required waiting period. When appropriate, let the new cat explore other rooms while the resident cat is elsewhere, with access controlled so neither cat is overwhelmed.

3. Let them see each other through a barrier

Try a partly opened door or a baby gate, starting at a distance where both cats appear comfortable. Pair the view with meals. Gradually reduce the distance or open the barrier further only as they tolerate it. The barrier lets them gather information about each other without requiring direct contact.

4. Move to supervised physical meetings

Once both cats tolerate seeing one another, try a short, supervised meeting. A harness or leash may be useful in some situations. Keep treats or toys available to encourage positive associations or redirect attention. If either cat stops coping, end the session and return to an earlier stage rather than trying to push through it.

5. Extend access gradually and manage resources

If meetings go well, allow the cats to interact while people are home, then gradually increase brief periods apart. The Humane Society guide suggests beginning with only a few minutes and adding time if all is going well. Provide one litter box per cat plus one extra, and spread out bowls, beds, and scratching posts. Vertical resting places and individual playtime give cats more ways to retreat and reduce pressure around shared resources. The goal can be peaceful coexistence; the cats do not have to become friends.

What if the rescue pet is a dog, or the pets are different species?

Separation, barriers, gradual exposure, and avoiding forced contact are useful broad principles, but the cat-to-cat sequence above is not a complete protocol for dog-to-cat, dog-to-dog, or other pairings. Arrange close contact only when you can control it safely for the animals involved. If there is a safety concern, ask the shelter or rescue for individualized guidance; the ASPCA notes that its behavior team may arrange dog meet-and-greets in some foster situations. The available guidance here does not establish a step-by-step protocol for birds, reptiles, rabbits, or other small animals.

How long should I keep a new pet separate?

There is no universal number of days. The ASPCA’s 3-3-3 guideline describes broad adjustment periods across the first days, following weeks, and first months, not a guarantee that animal introductions will be complete on that schedule. Some pets adjust faster, while others need longer. Likewise, the Humane Society’s example of keeping a new cat in a small area for up to a week is not a required countdown. Base each next step on how the animals handle the current one.

When should I pause or get help?

Pause and increase distance or return to separation if an animal is not coping. Seek help from the shelter or rescue, your veterinarian, or a qualified animal behavior professional if aggression persists, an animal fixates intensely, anyone is injured, or you cannot keep the animals safely apart. Do not leave them together unsupervised until their interactions have been reliably safe and calm.

Barrier setup: what to look for

A barrier is useful only if it prevents direct contact without trapping an animal or blocking its retreat. Choose one that suits the animals’ size and ability, installs securely, allows visibility when needed, and is easy for people to open and close. No particular brand or barrier design is endorsed by the guidance cited here.
