Keep introductions gradual, supervised, and optional for the dog. For a person greeting your dog, ask first and give your dog room to approach or move away. For two dogs, start with scent familiarization and a leashed meeting outdoors on neutral territory, with a separate handler for each. If either dog seems uneasy, create distance or end the interaction; no greeting is worth pushing through fear.
First, let the dog choose whether to engage
Social exposure works best when it is controlled and gradual. A dog should not be forced to stay near a person or another dog when showing fear or discomfort. The ASPCA advises letting a dog progress at its own pace, while the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) advises removing an uneasy dog from the situation to reduce bite risk.
Watch the whole dog rather than relying on one signal. A wagging tail by itself does not prove that a dog is friendly or comfortable. Consider the dog’s overall posture and behavior; if the dog appears tense, fearful, or aggressive, do not approach or continue the greeting. When in doubt, give more space.
How to greet a dog you don’t know
- Ask the person responsible for the dog. Do not approach or pet an unfamiliar dog without permission.
- Give the dog room. Avoid reaching toward the dog or moving in close. Let the dog decide whether to approach.
- Pay attention to the response. Look at overall posture and behavior, not just the tail. If the dog seems uncomfortable, stop and move away.
These steps apply whether you are greeting someone else’s dog or helping your own dog meet a visitor. A greeting is not a test the dog has to endure. If your dog becomes uneasy, increase distance or end the interaction.

How to introduce two dogs
Prepare before they meet
Give each dog a separate safe retreat and an opportunity to become familiar with the other dog’s scent before arranging face-to-face contact. RSPCA Australia recommends these measures when introducing a new dog to a resident dog.
Choose a neutral outdoor place
Plan the first meeting outdoors on neutral territory rather than in the resident dog’s home. Have a separate handler for each dog, and keep both dogs leashed. A neutral setting and close supervision are also recommended by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Keep the interaction gradual and supervised
Allow the dogs to experience one another without forcing contact. There is no universal meeting duration or guaranteed sequence that works for every pair. If either dog seems uncomfortable, calmly create distance and end the session instead of pressing on.
Manage their time together at home
Keep separate retreats available and supervise interactions as the dogs adjust. Follow their responses rather than assuming that one successful meeting means they are ready to share space without oversight.

When to pause, end the meeting, or get help
- Pause and create distance if a dog seems uneasy. If the discomfort continues, end the interaction and give the dog space.
- Stop casual introductions if aggression, fear, or reactivity makes a meeting difficult to manage safely. Do not try to solve a persistent problem by repeatedly putting the dog into greetings.
- Seek qualified support for ongoing behavior concerns. The ASPCA identifies a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, a veterinary behaviorist, or a qualified Certified Professional Dog Trainer as possible sources of help.
- Contact a veterinarian if behavior changes or seems unprovoked; pain or illness can affect behavior.
For a dog that overreacts when visitors arrive, the ASPCA suggests keeping the dog in another room when visitors arrive and working with a qualified professional to help the dog become more comfortable.
Use humane, reward-based training
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) says aversive methods—including electronic collars, prong collars, choke chains, leash corrections, and physical or psychological punishment—should not be used. Choose reward-based support, and use management such as distance and separation to keep encounters controlled while you work on the behavior.

The AVMA’s dog bite prevention guidance recommends removing an uneasy dog from a situation and using a leash in public. The ASPCA’s dog bite prevention guidance covers gradual socialization, greetings, body language, and managing visitor-related reactions. For dog-to-dog introductions, see RSPCA Australia’s introduction guidance and the AKC’s advice on introducing dogs. For training methods, consult the AVSAB position statements and public handouts.
