A light ball floating in a bird bath can help keep a small patch of water ice-free when a breeze moves it. It is a simple, low-cost trick—not a way to guarantee that the whole bath stays open in freezing weather. If it is still icing over, refresh the water with hot (not boiling) water or consider a purpose-made heated bath or bird-bath heater.
How the floating-ball trick works
Place a light ball on the water’s surface. When a gentle breeze moves it, the ball disturbs the water and may leave a small amount ice-free. The RSPB recommends this approach, but does not specify a particular ball, bath size, temperature limit or guaranteed result. Its guidance is about a small open area, not keeping the entire bath unfrozen. RSPB’s bird-bath guidance describes the method.

Choose a lightweight object that floats freely rather than one that wedges against the edge. A table-tennis ball is one possible example of a light floating ball, but the RSPB does not endorse a particular model. The method depends on air movement; in still or especially cold conditions, the water may freeze despite the ball.
What to do if the bath still freezes
Refresh it with hot water
RSPB suggests pouring hot water onto ice to reopen the bath. Do not use boiling water: a sudden temperature change can crack some baths. Replace the water as needed rather than treating the ball as a substitute for checking the bath.

Use a heated bath or water heater
A purpose-made heated bird bath or commercial bird-bath water heater is another option when manual thawing and a floating ball are not enough. Audubon notes that birds can benefit from a heated bath when other water sources are frozen or covered, and Cornell’s winter-care guidance also describes heated baths and commercial water heaters as ways to prevent freezing. These sources do not compare heater designs or provide installation instructions, so follow the product maker’s directions and safety requirements. Audubon’s winter bird-care advice and Cornell Lab’s winter-care guidance (PDF, 2019) discuss heated water options.
Consider a solar-powered bath
RSPB names the Solar Sipper as a solar-powered bird bath intended to help prevent freezing. The cited guidance does not establish its specifications, present availability or performance in particular weather, so check current product information before relying on it.

Keep winter bath water safe
- Never add chemicals. Do not put antifreeze, glycerine, salt or other additives in bird-bath water. RSPB warns that these can damage feather waterproofing or poison birds; Audubon also advises against chemicals to prevent freezing.
- Refresh the water daily. RSPB recommends replacing the bath water every day and filling it with tap water.
- Clean the bath weekly. Regular washing helps reduce disease risk, according to RSPB’s bath-care guidance.
- Check it regularly in cold weather. Birds need access to water when natural sources freeze, and a floating ball may keep only a small patch open. Make sure the bath has usable water rather than assuming it has stayed ice-free.
Which option should you choose?
| Option | What it offers | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Light floating ball | Simple, passive attempt to keep a small area open when moved by a breeze. | Weather-dependent; no stated temperature threshold or guarantee for the whole bath. |
| Hot-water refresh | Can reopen icy water when you are able to attend to the bath. | Requires repeat attention as it freezes; avoid boiling water to reduce the risk of cracking the bath. |
| Heated bath or commercial heater | Dedicated option for maintaining unfrozen water; supported as a category by Audubon and Cornell. | Requires a suitable product and use according to its instructions; the cited guidance does not compare models or installation methods. |
| Solar-powered bath | RSPB names Solar Sipper as an example intended to help prevent freezing. | Specifications, current availability and performance are not established by the cited guidance. |
