To keep your cat from using the dog door, combine management with redirection: limit unsupervised access where practical, reward your cat for settling somewhere away from the flap, and make indoor life engaging. A collar-activated or coded dog door can stop an unapproved pet from opening the flap, but it cannot stop a cat from slipping through after the dog opens it. No pet door can guarantee that a cat will stay in when the dog goes out, as PlexiDor explains in its FAQ.
Why is your cat going through the dog door?
Start by watching what happens before the cat heads for the flap. Cats may be curious, want to explore, follow the dog, or see the opening as an escape route. The right response depends on the individual cat; do not assume the same motivation for every household. Catster’s veterinarian-reviewed advice, updated September 15, 2026, suggests observing the cat and the dog’s behavior before choosing a management approach.

- Does the cat follow the dog as it approaches or passes through?
- Does the cat investigate the flap when the dog is elsewhere?
- Does the cat seem restless indoors or drawn to a particular view or outdoor stimulus?
These observations can help you decide whether to focus first on managing access, redirecting the cat, or adding enrichment.

1. Reward a preferred place away from the flap
Set up an appealing alternative spot—a bed, perch, or window seat away from the dog door. When the dog heads to the flap, invite or reward the cat for going to that spot instead. PetSafe’s advice describes this as redirection, not a guarantee that the cat will stop trying.
2. Add indoor play and enrichment
Offer interactive play, toys, puzzle feeders, and climbing opportunities to give your cat more to do indoors. Catster recommends these as ways to improve indoor enrichment; observe whether your cat’s interest in the dog door changes rather than assuming enrichment alone will solve the problem.

3. Manage access temporarily where it is safe
A baby gate or another suitable barrier may help keep the cat away from the flap at certain times. Treat it as a temporary household measure: check that it does not make the dog’s route unsafe or unusable, and supervise both animals after introducing it. There is no established evidence that a baby gate reliably prevents every cat from reaching or passing through a dog door.
4. Consider a deterrent cautiously
Catster lists tape or foil among possible deterrents. Their effectiveness is not established as a reliable, controlled intervention, and individual cats respond differently. If you try one, make sure it does not create a hazard, frighten either animal, or interfere with the dog’s use of the flap; stop if it causes distress.

5. Notice whether the dog is encouraging the cat
Watch whether the cat follows the dog or is drawn to the dog’s activity at the door. If the dog’s approach seems to trigger the cat, reward the cat for staying at its alternative spot while the dog uses the flap. Change one part of the routine at a time so you can see whether it helps.
6. Consider a secure catio or other supervised outdoor arrangement
If your cat is seeking outdoor access, a secure catio may provide an alternative to free passage through the dog door. Choose an arrangement that is escape-proof and appropriate for your home; an enclosure does not remove the need to consider local hazards and supervision.

An electronic dog door that reads a collar sensor or coded key can restrict which pet is authorized to open the flap. That can help if the cat is pushing the flap open independently. It does not solve tailgating: the cat may still slip through while the dog is passing or immediately after the dog triggers the door. PlexiDor explicitly notes this limitation in its manufacturer FAQ.

Before choosing a selective-access door, check how it identifies the dog, whether the settings fit your household, the opening size, and the installation requirements. Also consider the cat’s position when the dog goes through: access control on the flap is not a physical barrier between the animals.
Would a separate cat door be a better alternative?
A selective-access cat door may be useful if you want to control the cat’s own route, but it is not a fix for a cat following the dog through the dog door. Compare the way each model identifies pets, its locking modes, whether it allows timed access, and how many pet identities it can store. Features vary by product and can change, so confirm current specifications and installation fit on the manufacturer’s site.
- PetSafe’s Microchip Cat Door product page states that it reads a cat’s 15-digit microchip, supports up to 40 pets, and has four locking options. It also lists separately sold accessories for certain installations.
- SureFlap’s Microchip Pet Door page describes selective entry, curfew settings, manual locking, and memory for up to 32 pet identities. It also states that any animal can exit.
These are cat-door alternatives, not proof that a cat will stay inside when a dog door opens. For a dog door, VCA advises checking size and installation specifications and considering features such as directional sensing and sufficient memory when relevant: VCA’s pet-door guidance.

If your cat can reach the yard through a pet door, assess the actual risks in your setting before relying on electronic access. VCA recommends using an electronic pet door only when the yard is hazard-free and securely enclosed. It cautions that electric fences do not keep other animals out and suggests considering a secure physical barrier. PetMD also advises an escape-proof enclosure and calls attention to hazards such as nearby driveways or busy streets, predators, other cats, and falling ice or snow in relevant settings: PetMD’s cat-door training guidance.
If you are training your cat to use a different door
Training a cat to use a cat door is a different goal from teaching it not to use the dog’s door. If you are introducing a separate cat door, make the process gradual and positive rather than pushing the cat through. PetMD quotes Dr. Brian Glenn Collins, DVM, section chief of Community Practice Service at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine: “Don’t push the cat through the door, which may just scare them or make them leery of the door, and don’t expect the cat to use the door right away,” PetMD reports. That advice concerns familiarization with a cat door; it does not establish that a cat can be trained never to follow a dog through a dog door.
