For a necessary drive in warm weather, run the air conditioning, bring fresh water, and give your dog frequent chances to drink. Plan stops so your dog is never left alone in a parked car—not even briefly, in the shade, with the windows cracked, or with the engine and air conditioning running. If you think your dog is overheating, move them somewhere cooler, start cooling them with water and airflow, and contact a veterinarian immediately.
Why a short stop in a parked car is unsafe
A parked car can heat up quickly, so a brief errand is not a safe exception. The American Veterinary Medical Association advises never leaving a pet in a car, even in the shade or with the windows cracked: AVMA guidance on pets in vehicles. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine gives an example of how quickly conditions can change: at 70°F outdoors, the temperature inside a car can rise by 40°F in an hour, with most of that rise occurring in the first 15–30 minutes. That example is not a forecast for every vehicle or a safe-time calculation. Cornell also warns that leaving a dog unattended in a running car with air conditioning is unsafe: Cornell’s hot-weather safety guidance.

How to plan a necessary drive
- Skip optional trips during extreme heat. If your dog does not need to come, leave them at home in a comfortable environment.
- Use the air conditioning while the car is moving. Bring fresh water and offer frequent opportunities to drink. A collapsible bowl can make supervised breaks easier; it does not cool the car or make unattended waiting safe.
- Secure your dog for the journey. Use appropriate restraint or confinement so your dog cannot roam into the driver’s space or interfere with driving.
- Plan stops around supervision. Have a person stay with the dog, take turns leaving the vehicle, or leave the dog at home. Do not leave the dog alone in a parked car, even if the stop is short.
Cornell’s broader warm-weather advice also recommends water and a collapsible bowl for outings. For a car trip, the bowl is a convenience for offering water—not a cooling treatment.

Which dogs need extra caution?
Any dog can overheat. Some are at greater risk, including short-muzzled dogs such as pugs and bulldogs; overweight or elderly dogs; dogs with heart or breathing problems; and dogs with thick or dark coats. Heat, humidity, poor ventilation, confinement, and lack of acclimatization can add to the risk. These factors call for extra care, not a reason to assume that other dogs are safe in a hot car. Signs your dog may be overheating
Watch for heavy or persistent panting, excessive drooling, agitation, whining, seeking shade, reluctance to move or play, excessive thirst, noisy or difficult breathing, a fast heart or breathing rate, and wobbliness. Vomiting or diarrhea, weakness, confusion, seizures, and collapse are serious warning signs. Heat illness can worsen quickly; do not wait for collapse before seeking help. Cornell lists heat-related signs in dogs, and UC Davis describes heatstroke symptoms and response.

What to do if you suspect heat illness
- Stop the exposure. Move your dog out of the heat into a cooler, shaded or air-conditioned place.
- Begin cooling. UC Davis recommends room-temperature water and a fan. Do not use ice water or cover your dog with wet blankets.
- Contact a veterinarian immediately. Follow the veterinarian’s instructions and do not delay emergency care.
- Arrange cooled transport if you need to travel. RSPCA guidance for England and Wales advises cooling the dog first, then transporting them in a cooled, well-ventilated vehicle, and calling the veterinary practice ahead. Local emergency procedures may differ; follow your veterinarian’s directions. See RSPCA heatstroke advice.
