Keep towels out of reach, supervise your dog around laundry, and reward a safer alternative when chewing starts. If your dog has swallowed any towel material, call your veterinarian for advice: fabric can become a dangerous foreign body, and there is no established safe amount that is guaranteed to pass.
Chewing a towel is different from swallowing it
Puppies and young adult dogs may chew household items as they explore, play, or teethe. That does not automatically mean a dog has pica. But repeatedly eating non-food material—including fabric—is called pica and merits a conversation with a veterinarian. VCA: Dogs and Destructive Chewing; AKC: Everything You Need to Know About Pica in Dogs; VCA: Pica in Dogs.
Try to notice when the behavior happens: during play, when the dog is alone, or around a particular towel or routine. Those observations can help you describe the pattern to your veterinarian, but they cannot diagnose its cause.
What to do if your dog swallowed towel fabric
Contact your veterinarian if you know or suspect your dog swallowed towel material. Fabric may pass, but a foreign body can also obstruct the digestive tract; an obstruction can be life-threatening and may require surgery. The available veterinary guidance does not establish a safe quantity of towel that will pass uneventfully. Do not rely on a home remedy in place of veterinary advice. - Store towels securely: Use a closed hamper or cupboard, and keep used towels off the floor. Close doors or use barriers to block access to laundry areas.
- Supervise around laundry: Keep your dog in sight when towels are out, especially in places where the dog has grabbed them before.
- Use a safe area when you cannot supervise: A dog-safe confined space or barrier can prevent access while you are away or occupied.
- Offer appropriate activity and rest: Provide attention and enrichment suited to your dog. A feeding toy or puzzle feeder can be one optional way to add enrichment; it is not a proven treatment for towel eating, and should be an appropriate size and used with supervision.
These steps follow veterinary guidance to restrict access to preferred non-food items and manage the dog’s environment. AKC: Everything You Need to Know About Pica in Dogs; VCA: Pica in Dogs.
Teach a safer response with rewards
Practice “leave it” and “drop it” with rewards. Begin in an easy, controlled situation, then gradually practice with more tempting items and distractions. Reward your dog for turning away from an item or releasing it; avoid making a towel into a tug game.

Why a dog may chew or eat towels
There is no single explanation for towel chewing or ingestion. A veterinarian may consider both health and behavioral factors; possibilities are not diagnoses. Medical contributors to pica can include gastrointestinal disease, parasites, anemia, malnutrition, diabetes, and other conditions. Behavioral factors may include anxiety or frustration; boredom, compulsive behavior, or learned attention-seeking may also be relevant. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the approaches fit together
| Approach | What it does |
|---|---|
| Closed storage and barriers | Prevents access to towels when you cannot actively intervene. |
| Supervision | Lets you interrupt access early and guide your dog to another activity. |
| Reward-based cues | Teaches an alternate response such as leaving or releasing an item. |
| Enrichment | Adds appropriate activity; feeding toys are one option, not a specific cure for towel eating. |
| Veterinary assessment | Helps evaluate repeated fabric ingestion and possible medical contributors. |
Access control and veterinary assessment solve different problems: one limits opportunities to swallow fabric, while the other helps investigate why ingestion is happening.
