Give your cat a warm, comfortable, draft-free place to rest, with a soft bed or blanket if it suits the spot your cat already chooses. Most indoor cats do not automatically need a heated bed or a specific thermostat setting. Watch for signs of cold stress, and contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat seems weak, unsteady, or unusually unresponsive.

Make a comfortable resting place

Start with a quiet spot away from drafts. A soft blanket or washable bed can make a resting place more comfortable, but let your cat choose where to settle and keep access to its usual indoor spaces. Cats vary in their needs, so avoid forcing a cat to stay in one warm spot.

Cats Protection says there is generally no need to turn on the heating just for a cat unless the indoor temperature falls to 7°C (45°F) or below. Treat that as the organization’s rule of thumb, not a universal medical cutoff or a guarantee that a room is comfortable for every cat. The right conditions can vary with a cat’s coat, body condition, age, health, and individual circumstances.

Dr. M.A. Crist of Texas A&M University says the temperature that is too cold for a pet depends on factors including fur thickness and length and body mass, making an exact danger point difficult to set. That guidance applies to pets generally, not specifically to healthy indoor cats. Texas A&M’s cold-weather guidance does not establish a universal indoor-cat thermostat setting.

Choose bedding and heat safely

A blanket or bed is an optional comfort item, not a requirement. Choose something that fits the place your cat likes to rest and follow its washing instructions. If considering an electric heated bed or pad for ordinary comfort, check the product’s safety directions and keep cords where your cat cannot chew them. Heated products can pose cord-chewing and burn risks, according to PetMD’s hypothermia guidance.

Cats Protection mentions heat pads or beds over radiators as possible comfort options. That is different from first aid: do not use a heating pad to warm a cat when hypothermia is suspected. In that situation, gradual warming and veterinary care are the priorities.

Weakness, difficulty walking, slow or shallow breathing, pale gums, collapse, or unresponsiveness are more serious warning signs. Collapse or unresponsiveness warrants emergency veterinary help. What to do if hypothermia is possible

  1. Bring your cat indoors. If the cat is wet, dry it gently.
  2. Warm it gradually. Wrap the cat in warm, dry towels or blankets; body heat can also help. Do not use hot water, a heating pad, or a hair dryer, and do not force food or water.
  3. Contact a veterinarian promptly. Do not wait to see whether serious signs pass. The American Animal Hospital Association’s cold-weather advice likewise recommends bringing a suspected hypothermic pet indoors, wrapping it in warm blankets, and seeking veterinary care promptly.

Indoor warmth is different from outdoor winter protection

Keeping a cat indoors is the best way to avoid cold-weather dangers such as hypothermia and frostbite, according to the Cornell Feline Health Center. Its advice about outdoor shelter, bedding, food, and water is for cats that cannot be kept inside; it is not a checklist every indoor cat needs. A cat that lives indoors still needs a comfortable place to rest and prompt veterinary attention if it shows concerning symptoms.
