If they must not reach trees during the day, use a suitably secure run with an overhead barrier. A coop routine can encourage birds to sleep indoors, but it is not a guaranteed way to stop daytime climbing.
Why chickens climb and roost in trees
Perching in trees at night is consistent with chickens’ natural behavior. Virginia Tech Extension explains that jungle fowl perch in trees and that modern chickens retain many of the same motivations. Trees can also provide overhead cover, shelter from weather, and protection from aerial predators. That combination can make a tree more appealing than an exposed yard—or a coop without an inviting perch.

This helps explain why scolding alone is unlikely to solve the problem: it does not provide an alternative roost or replace the cover the tree offers. The Extension discussion addresses ranging behavior in several settings; it is not a controlled backyard trial showing that a particular intervention will keep every chicken out of trees. How to encourage chickens to roost in the coop
Provide an accessible, suitable perch
Place a stable wooden roost inside the enclosed coop, separate from the nest boxes. Oregon State University Extension recommends 1- to 2-inch-square lumber with rounded top edges and a general allowance of 5 to 10 inches of roost pole per bird. Treat these as starting guidance: breed, bird size, and coop layout matter, and silkies may need lower roosts. Maryland Extension notes that hens tend to favor the highest point in the house, so perch placement and height can influence which spot they choose.

Make sure birds can reach the perch and that the coop is secure and comfortable. Build a predictable evening return routine
NC State Extension suggests letting hens out within the hour before sunset; they will naturally return as the sun goes down, after which you can close the coop door. CSU Extension also recommends training birds to return each evening and locking them inside at night. Birds raised in the coop naturally return there to lay and roost after daytime ranging. NC State cautions that hens are difficult to herd, so a consistent routine is more practical than expecting to drive a flock indoors at the last minute.

How to prevent access to trees during the day
If the birds need to stay out of trees while ranging, physical containment is the dependable option. Enclose the coop in a poultry run and consider overhead netting or wire to close off the route out. Choose and maintain fencing and cover with both bird containment and local predator risks in mind. Mesh, height, anchoring, and any buried perimeter barrier depend on the site and predators; the Extension guidance does not prescribe one design for every yard.

Provide usable space and suitable shelter inside the enclosure. Since overhead vegetation can be attractive for cover, a barren run may not meet the same needs as a tree. A run limits access while birds are enclosed; it does not necessarily erase their preference to perch or range. Which approach fits your flock?
| Approach | Best suited to | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Coop roost and evening routine | Flocks that can safely range during the day and return to housing at night | Does not necessarily prevent access to trees during daytime ranging. |
| Fenced run with an overhead barrier | Yards where chickens must be kept away from trees or free-ranging is unsuitable | Needs appropriate design, upkeep, and predator-aware materials. |
| Both together | Owners who need daytime containment as well as predictable nighttime housing | Requires suitable coop and run capacity, plus routine maintenance. |
These options reflect Extension husbandry guidance, not a head-to-head trial of tree-deterrence methods. Roost measurements are recommendations rather than proven efficacy thresholds, and individual birds may respond differently.

What not to count on
The Extension sources cited here do not establish that wing clipping, decoys, scents, sounds, or any single training trick will reliably stop chickens from climbing trees. Avoid treating an unverified deterrent as a substitute for a usable coop perch, an evening routine, or containment when access must be restricted.
