Keep your dog cool by offering fresh water and shade, limiting exercise to cooler hours, and avoiding hot pavement and enclosed spaces. Learn the signs of overheating, too: if your dog may have heatstroke, move them out of the heat, begin cooling with water and airflow, and get urgent veterinary care.

Prevent overheating before you go out

Plan walks and exercise around the heat

Take walks and exercise during the coolest parts of the day. Avoid strenuous activity in hot or humid weather, and choose shaded routes with cool walking surfaces. Hot pavement and other heated surfaces can pose a risk to paws; if a route offers no cooler option, shorten or skip the walk.

The RSPCA reports that dogs are 10 times more likely to suffer heat-related illness from exercising in hot weather than from overheating in cars. The page does not state a publication year, and this is the RSPCA’s comparison rather than a prediction for an individual dog or outing. RSPCA: Dogs Die On Hot Walks.

Provide water, shade, and a cool place to rest

Keep fresh water available and make sure your dog can rest in a shaded, cool, well-ventilated area. Bring a portable water dispenser on hot-weather outings, as the RSPCA recommends. At home, a paddling pool or frozen toy may offer extra relief if your dog enjoys it; supervise these activities and do not rely on equipment in place of shade, rest, or reduced exertion. Keep dogs out of hot enclosed spaces

Never leave a dog in a parked car, even in the shade or with the windows cracked. Avoid other hot enclosed spaces, including conservatories and outbuildings. The RSPCA warns that when it is 22°C (76°F) outside, a vehicle or similar enclosed environment can reach 47°C (117°F) inside quickly; the page does not give a publication year, and the example is not a universal heating rate for every vehicle or set of conditions. RSPCA: Keeping Your Dog Safe in Summer.

Which dogs need extra care in hot weather?

Be especially cautious with short-nosed breeds, overweight dogs, dogs with thick coats, and dogs with heart or respiratory conditions. Very young and senior dogs may also need extra care. Ask your veterinarian about a suitable exercise routine and warm-weather precautions for your individual dog. AVMA: Warm Weather Pet Safety.

How to tell if your dog is overheating

Watch for excessive panting, drooling, restlessness, or unusual tiredness. More serious warning signs include weakness, unsteady or confused movement, vomiting, abnormal gum or tongue color, seizures, or collapse. Heatstroke can become an emergency; do not wait for severe symptoms to resolve on their own. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine: Heatstroke: A medical emergency.

What to do if your dog may have heatstroke

  1. Stop activity and move your dog out of the heat. Get them to a cooler, shaded place.
  2. Start cooling promptly. Wet the body with water cooler than your dog and provide airflow. Avoid pouring water over the head. Lauren Bennett, a dog welfare expert at the RSPCA, says: “Contrary to popular belief, cold water rarely causes shock in over-heating dogs – dousing or immersing the over-heated dog in cold water is vital to their recovery.” This advice accompanies the RSPCA’s instructions to cool promptly and seek veterinary care. RSPCA: How to Recognise & Treat Heatstroke in Dogs.
  3. Contact a veterinarian and travel for urgent care. Call ahead if possible, then transport your dog in a cool, ventilated vehicle. Cooling at home is not a substitute for veterinary treatment; Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine identifies heatstroke as a medical emergency. Choosing optional cooling aids

There is no measured product comparison here. If you use a water bottle, travel dispenser, paddling pool, or frozen toy, consider whether your dog will use it, whether it provides drinking water or a cool retreat, and whether it is practical to carry or clean. Supervise water-based activities. These aids are optional: they do not replace access to shade and water, rest, reduced exertion, or prompt veterinary care when heatstroke is suspected.
