To help a kitten stay calmer in the car, teach it to feel safe in its carrier at home, then introduce handling, the parked car and short drives in gradual steps. Keep the kitten secured in a stable carrier for every trip; never let it roam in a moving vehicle. Practice can reduce avoidable stress, but it cannot guarantee that every kitten will enjoy travel.
Why the carrier comes first
A carrier protects both kitten and driver: a loose kitten can distract the driver or move into an unsafe place. VCA advises that cats in cars should always be in a carrier, and the American Association of Feline Practitioners likewise recommends transporting cats secured in motor vehicles. Choose a carrier that can be kept stable in your particular vehicle and gives you practical access to your kitten. Veterinary guidance favors a top- or front-opening carrier, or one with a removable top, because it can make handling easier.
Carrier styles involve trade-offs rather than a universal best choice. Hard-sided carriers are easier to clean; soft mesh carriers are lighter. Whichever you choose, make sure the kitten can settle comfortably with familiar bedding and that you can secure the carrier in the vehicle. The cited guidance does not establish crash-test ratings for ordinary carriers, so do not assume a carrier is crash-tested unless its manufacturer provides relevant evidence.
Teach your kitten that the carrier is a safe place
Make it familiar before you need it
Set the open carrier in a quiet, familiar part of your home with a soft blanket or bedding the kitten already knows. Leave it available as a resting place rather than bringing it out only before a trip. Let your kitten investigate at its own pace; reward voluntary approaches and entry with food, treats or a toy. Do not force the kitten inside as a training method.

Build up to a calm, closed carrier
If your kitten is comfortable approaching the carrier, offer food near it and gradually move the food inside. When it can enter without pressure, practice brief, calm closures. Open the carrier again before the kitten becomes distressed, and reward quiet participation. Increase the closed time gradually. A closed door should not always predict a car trip; occasionally practice at home and then let the kitten out.
Progress from home practice to short drives
Move forward only while your kitten remains reasonably settled. If it becomes distressed, go back to an easier step and build up more slowly.

- Try a very short drive. When the parked-car sessions go well, take a brief drive, return home and reward calm participation.
- Increase the duration gradually. Extend trips in small steps rather than beginning with a long journey. Keep some outings short and pleasant so travel does not predict only a veterinary visit.
VCA recommends aiming for at least 10 positive car trips for every one that may be somewhat scary. Treat this as a training target, not a guarantee or a required schedule: adapt the pace to your kitten and seek veterinary advice if distress persists.
Prepare the carrier and car for the trip
- Use familiar bedding. A known blanket can make the carrier feel more familiar. An absorbent travel pad is an optional liner that may help with accidents.
- Keep the ride steady and quiet. Secure the carrier so it stays stable and as level as practical. Drive smoothly and keep noise low; calm, unhurried handling can also help.
- Avoid direct airflow. Do not aim a heater or air conditioner directly into the carrier. A light cover may help some kittens feel less exposed, but it must not block ventilation.
- Consider pheromone spray only as an optional aid. If you use a synthetic feline pheromone spray, follow its label. VCA and International Cat Care describe it as a possible comfort aid, not a guaranteed solution. Apply it to the carrier or bedding and allow it to dry before placing your kitten inside.
- Never leave the kitten alone in a parked car. Keep the kitten secured in its carrier throughout travel.
Recognize possible motion sickness or persistent distress
Travel distress is not always just fear. VCA lists excessive drooling, lethargy or inactivity, vomiting and defecation among signs associated with motion sickness in cats. If these signs recur, or your kitten’s distress is severe or ongoing, contact your veterinarian for an individual plan. A veterinarian can assess whether motion sickness or another issue may be involved and advise whether medication is appropriate. Medication may sometimes support training, but it does not replace gradual carrier and car familiarization; do not give your kitten medication or supplements without veterinary advice.
