Put food away after each meal, bring outdoor bowls inside at night, and check for other attractants nearby. Food storage helps, but it cannot prevent rodents from entering through unsealed gaps.
Start by removing the food rodents can reach
Pet food left in a bowl or spilled on the floor is an accessible food source. Make feeding time-limited: serve the meal, then put the food away when the pet is finished. Wipe up crumbs and spills promptly, including around the feeding spot and nearby storage areas.

Do not leave pet food or water bowls outdoors overnight. If your pet eats outside, offer food during the day, then bring the bowls in at night. This reduces access to pet food, although it will not address other food sources such as garbage, bird seed, compost, or fallen fruit.
A simple after-meal routine
- Put away uneaten food as soon as the meal is over.
- Wash and dry the food bowl after each use.
- Wipe crumbs and spills from the floor and nearby surfaces.
- Bring outdoor food and water bowls inside at night.
Make the routine part of feeding rather than a task reserved for when you see a mouse or rat. The goal is to avoid leaving a predictable food source in place between meals. If food is measured or prepared away from the bowl, clean that spot too: crumbs around a cupboard, counter, or storage container can undermine otherwise careful feeding habits.

Check whether the bowl is actually empty and whether food has scattered beneath or behind it. Pick up uneaten portions rather than leaving them available until the next feeding. If several pets eat in different places, apply the same routine to each feeding spot; one bowl left out can still provide access even when the others are cleaned up.
Store dry pet food securely
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends storing food and animal feed in thick plastic or metal containers with tight lids. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) offers two practical ways to store pet food while keeping its product information available: keep it in the original bag inside a secondary container, or pour it into a clean, dry container with a snug lid.
| Storage approach | What to do | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Original bag inside a secondary container | Keep the food in its bag and place the whole bag inside a tightly lidded container. CDC recommends thick plastic or metal for food and feed storage. | The bag keeps its product details with the food. Make sure the outer container closes tightly and that the bag fits without preventing the lid from sealing. |
| Food poured into a separate container | Use a clean, dry container with a snug lid, as FDA advises. Retain the product’s UPC, lot number, product name, manufacturer, and best-by date. | The container must be clean and completely dry before use. Keep the identifying details where you can find them if you need to ask about the product or make a complaint. |
Either approach is supported by FDA storage guidance; the guidance does not establish that a particular commercial container or material is best. A tightly lidded metal container is one option. Choose a container that closes securely and suits the amount of food you store. If you decant food, do not discard the information on the original package: FDA advises keeping the identifying details available.

Keeping the original bag inside a secondary container is a straightforward choice when the bag fits and the lid can still close fully. The package remains with the food, so product details are less likely to get separated. The secondary container provides an additional barrier, and CDC’s guidance supports thick plastic or metal containers with tight lids for food and animal feed.
Pouring food into a separate container may be convenient when the bag is awkward to handle or does not fit inside the available storage container. It also makes it especially important to keep the container clean and dry before refilling it and to save the package information. FDA identifies the UPC, lot number, product name, manufacturer, and best-by date as details to retain. Keep that information somewhere accessible, such as with the food container, so it can be found if you contact the manufacturer or make a complaint.
There is no source-supported basis for naming one commercial model as the best choice. Compare practical features instead: whether the lid fits snugly, whether the container can hold the amount you need, whether it is easy to clean and dry between bags, and whether the original product details will remain available. A metal container with a tight-fitting lid is a reasonable option, not a requirement that every household must meet. No specific price or tested product performance is established here.
Keep containers ready for the next bag
Before adding another bag of food, make sure the storage container is clean and dry. This is especially important when food is poured directly into it. Close the lid after every use rather than leaving the container open during feeding or meal preparation.

When the container is open, keep the food attended and close it again as soon as you have taken out the portion you need. Check that the lid is seated after closing; a container that is merely covered or has a loose lid does not meet the practical aim of tight storage. If you use the original bag inside the container, arrange it so it does not interfere with the lid’s seal.
Clean bowls and the area around them
Cleaning removes food residue that could otherwise remain available to rodents. FDA advises washing and drying food bowls after each use and washing water bowls daily. Clean the floor and nearby surfaces when food is spilled, and check cupboards or other places where pet food is stored for escaped kibble or crumbs.
Build the cleanup into feeding rather than waiting for visible signs of rodents. A bowl may look empty while crumbs remain underneath it or along the edge of a nearby cupboard. Pay particular attention to the area where food is measured, opened, or stored.
Keep food bowls and water bowls on different cleaning schedules: food bowls should be washed and dried after every use, while water bowls should be washed daily. Drying the food bowl is part of FDA’s advice, not an optional substitute for washing. If a spill occurs between meals, remove it promptly rather than waiting for the scheduled bowl wash.

Include the route between the food bag and the bowl in the cleanup. Look for kibble that fell while pouring or measuring, crumbs near the container, and food in nearby cupboards or on adjacent surfaces. Sanitation does not replace secure storage or sealing entry points, but removing these small food sources helps avoid leaving easy access around the feeding station.
Adjust the routine for outdoor feeding
Outdoor feeding requires extra attention because bowls left outside overnight remain accessible. Feed during the day when possible, limit how long food is available, and bring food and water bowls inside at night. Clean up any spilled food around the feeding place.
Pet food may not be the only attractant. Check the surrounding area for garbage, bird seed, compost, and fallen fruit; leaving those sources in place can keep food available even after the pet’s bowl is removed. The University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program and Ventura County Resource Management Agency both include outdoor food sources in their rat-prevention guidance.

A useful outdoor sequence is to put out only the food needed for the meal, supervise or check the feeding period, then remove the bowls and any leftovers. Bring the water bowl inside too rather than leaving it outside overnight. Afterward, look around the feeding area for spilled kibble. This limits the time pet food is available, though it does not guarantee that rodents will stay away if other outdoor food sources remain.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Look beyond the immediate bowl when reviewing an outdoor feeding spot. Garbage, bird seed, compost, and fallen fruit can continue to attract rodents after pet food is gone. The UC Statewide IPM Program’s “Rats: Home and Landscape” guidance and Ventura County Resource Management Agency’s “Prevent and Control Rats” both address outdoor food sources, so consider the surroundings as part of the routine rather than treating the bowl in isolation.
Inspect and seal possible entry points
Rodent-proofing the feeding area also means checking how rodents could reach it. The CDC says mice can fit through a hole about 1/4 inch (6 mm) in diameter. Treat that figure as a practical inspection guideline: look closely for small gaps as well as larger openings.
The CDC’s figure concerns mice and hole size; it is not a statistic about how many rodents are present, nor does it mean that storage alone will solve an access problem. A tightly closed food container removes one reward, while exclusion addresses routes into the building. Both parts matter when rodents can enter freely.
Where to look
- Around doors and their frames
- Where pipes, utility lines, or other services pass through walls
- Along foundations and around vents
- In nearby cupboards, storage spaces, and other areas adjoining the feeding or food-storage area
Inspect the area around the feeding station as well as the exterior and interior of the building. Gaps can be easy to overlook where a pipe or utility line enters a wall, around a vent, or near a door. A nearby cupboard or storage area is worth checking for both crumbs and possible openings. Follow likely routes rather than assuming rodents must enter through the room where the bowl sits.
Choose a repair suited to the opening
For small holes, CDC suggests filling the opening with steel wool and securing it with caulk. For larger openings, it identifies materials such as lath screen, metal, cement, hardware cloth, or metal sheeting. Match the repair to the size and location of the gap rather than relying on a food container to solve an entry problem.
Steel wool and caulk are repair materials for small holes, not general-purpose purchases to scatter around a feeding area. Likewise, the larger-opening materials are options for sealing actual gaps. The CDC guidance does not identify a universal material or repair that fits every opening, so consider the location and size before choosing a fix. If a repair is beyond your skills, qualified help is a sensible next step.

The CDC page “How to Seal Up to Prevent Rodents,” updated and reviewed April 8, 2024, gives the 1/4-inch (6 mm) mouse-opening guideline and these repair examples. Use the measurement to decide where to inspect closely, not as a reason to ignore bigger openings or other possible routes.

Putting food away, cleaning, and sealing openings are prevention measures, not a diagnosis or a guarantee that an established infestation will end. If you are concerned about an infestation, CDC recommends contacting local or state health authorities. If rodents have entered inaccessible areas that need cleanup, CDC suggests consulting a pest professional.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the response proportional to the signs you find. A spill calls for cleanup and a review of storage and feeding habits. Evidence that rodents are present in a space you cannot safely or practically access calls for local public-health or pest-control help rather than relying on bowl cleanup alone.
Local escalation options vary, so contact the relevant local or state health authority for direction if you are concerned. A pest professional may be appropriate when rodents are in an inaccessible space that requires cleanup. Do not treat an improved feeding routine as proof that an established problem has been resolved.
A practical prevention checklist
- Put away pet food after each meal and clean spills promptly.
- Store dry food in its original bag inside a tightly lidded container, or use a clean, dry container with a snug lid and retain the product details.
- Wash and dry food bowls after each use; wash water bowls daily.
- Bring outdoor bowls inside at night and check nearby areas for other food sources.
- Inspect the building for gaps, including small holes around pipes, doors, vents, and utility lines, and seal openings with an appropriate material.
- Contact local or state health authorities about an infestation; use a pest professional when rodents have entered inaccessible areas requiring cleanup.
This combined approach follows guidance from the CDC and FDA, with additional sanitation and outdoor-attractant advice from Cornell University, the UC Statewide IPM Program, and Ventura County Resource Management Agency.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I keep mice and rats out of my pet’s food?
Put food away after each meal, clean spills promptly, and store dry food in the original bag inside a tightly lidded container or in a clean, dry container with a snug lid. Also inspect and seal entry points; food storage alone will not prevent rodents from entering.
Should I leave my pet’s food bowl outside overnight?
No. Bring outdoor food and water bowls inside at night. If outdoor feeding is necessary, offer food during the day, remove it after the meal, and clean up spills.

How often should I clean pet food and water bowls?
FDA advises washing and drying food bowls after each use and washing water bowls daily. Clean spilled food from the surrounding floor and surfaces promptly.
Is it better to keep pet food in its bag or pour it into a container?
Both approaches are supported by FDA guidance. You can keep the whole original bag inside a tightly lidded secondary container, or transfer food to a clean, dry container with a snug lid. If you transfer it, retain the UPC, lot number, product name, manufacturer, and best-by date.
What size hole can a mouse fit through?
The CDC says mice can fit through a hole about 1/4 inch (6 mm) in diameter. Use that as a guideline when inspecting gaps around doors, pipes, foundations, vents, and utility lines.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What can I use to seal a rodent entry hole?
For small holes, CDC suggests steel wool secured with caulk. For larger openings, it lists lath screen, metal, cement, hardware cloth, or metal sheeting. The suitable repair depends on the opening and its location.
What should I do if rodents are already in the house?
Routine food storage and cleanup may not be enough for an established infestation. CDC recommends contacting local or state health authorities if you are concerned, and suggests a pest professional when rodents have entered inaccessible areas that need cleanup.
Will a sealed pet-food container solve a rodent problem?
A tightly lidded container helps keep dry food less accessible, but it cannot block entry into a building or remove other food sources. Combine secure storage and sanitation with inspection and sealing of openings, and seek local or professional help for an infestation.
The Bottom Line
Keep meals time-limited, clean bowls and spills, store dry food behind a snug lid, and bring outdoor bowls inside at night. Then inspect and seal likely entry points: the CDC notes that mice can fit through openings about 1/4 inch (6 mm) wide. If rodents are present in inaccessible areas or you are concerned about an infestation, contact local or state health authorities or a qualified pest professional.
