Move your pet’s enclosure out of direct sun, provide continuous fresh water and ventilation, and offer a covered cool surface or wrapped frozen bottle that the animal can leave whenever it chooses. Check the housing again as the sun moves. Heat affects species differently: PDSA describes 18–20°C as the ideal living-space range for rabbits, while Blue Cross says temperatures above 25°C are too hot for rabbits; PDSA says guinea pigs may become uncomfortable above 24°C and that temperatures above 27°C could lead to heatstroke. These figures are species-specific guidance, not one universal limit for every small pet.

Watch behavior as closely as the thermometer. Reduced eating or energy, drooling, rapid shallow breaths, unusual stretching, marked lethargy, collapse or seizures can indicate heat stress. Move a suspected casualty to a cool, shaded place, start cautious cooling appropriate to the species and call a veterinarian immediately. Do not force water, immerse a rabbit in cold water or delay professional advice.

Why hot weather is dangerous for small pets

Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and other small mammals have little margin for error when their enclosure heats up. A hutch, cage, shed, conservatory or greenhouse can become much hotter than the surrounding garden, and a patch of shade can disappear as the sun travels. Heat also builds where air cannot circulate. An animal may therefore be at risk even when the outdoor temperature does not feel extreme to you.

Small pets often hide early illness. A quiet animal that is eating less may be showing heat stress rather than simply resting. Check each pet several times during a hot spell, including its breathing, posture, appetite, water intake and responsiveness. A thermometer at the animal’s level can help you understand the enclosure, but behavior and veterinary advice remain essential.

Temperature guidance by species

Do not apply a rabbit threshold to a guinea pig, hamster or another species. The available welfare guidance gives different figures and does not establish a single safe upper temperature.

Species Published guidance How to use it
Rabbits PDSA describes 18–20°C as an ideal living-space temperature. Blue Cross says temperatures above 25°C are too hot for rabbits and may increase heatstroke risk. Start improving shade, airflow and cooling well before the enclosure approaches the higher figure. Treat any illness signs as an emergency regardless of the reading.
Guinea pigs PDSA says temperatures above 24°C can be uncomfortable and temperatures above 27°C could lead to heatstroke. Move the enclosure to a cooler, ventilated location and monitor closely as it approaches or exceeds these values.
Hamsters and other small pets The cited guidance does not provide a universal temperature limit for every species. Use shade, ventilation, water and optional cool surfaces, and ask a veterinarian for a species-specific range, especially for animals with illness or thick coats.

These recommendations come mainly from UK welfare organizations. PDSA identifies its general heatstroke first-aid page as advice for UK pets, while the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) gives broader advice about shade, fresh water and heat safety. Local veterinary services may give different emergency instructions, so keep your veterinarian’s number available.

Set up a cooler enclosure before the heat arrives

Choose a location that stays shaded

Move cages, hutches and runs away from direct sunlight. Do not use a greenhouse or conservatory as housing during hot weather, and do not assume a shed is cool simply because it is indoors. Check the enclosure in the morning, around midday and later in the afternoon: the shaded area can shift or disappear.

For outdoor pets, provide dependable shade and a shelter with open, ventilated sides. A solid roof can block sun, but a closed box can trap hot air. Keep the animal able to move between shade and brighter areas so it can regulate its own position. Never place a run where fencing, walls or plastic panels prevent air movement.

Keep air moving without removing shelter

Indoor rooms need ventilation, but windows should not create a dangerous escape route or expose the enclosure to direct sun. Outdoor shelters need airflow as well as shade. In an emergency, PDSA advises creating a breeze while cooling the pet carefully; do not use airflow as a substitute for moving the animal out of a hot room.

Provide water continuously

Fresh, clean water must be available at all times and topped up during the day. Check that a bottle is dispensing and that a bowl has not tipped, become contaminated or warmed substantially. If your pet normally uses a bottle, keep that familiar option; a stable bowl can provide a second source if the enclosure allows it. Do not force water into a weak or collapsed animal, because liquid can enter the airway.

Inspect the enclosure’s hottest surfaces

Run your hand over floors, platforms and hideouts, and compare the temperature in the sleeping area with the exercise area. Remove materials that hold heat and reposition beds or hides so the pet can choose a cooler spot. Keep bedding dry and make sure cooling items cannot block the only exit from a shelter.

Cooling aids that let the animal choose

Cooling products are optional aids, not replacements for shade, ventilation and water. Every cold item should be covered, stable and placed so the pet can move away from it.

Cooling aid Practical use Important limitation
Cool ceramic tile Blue Cross names a ceramic cooling tile as an option. Put it in a shaded area as a surface the pet can choose to sit on or leave. A tile cannot cool an overheated enclosure by itself. Check that it is secure, unbroken and not the only resting surface.
Partly filled frozen plastic bottle The RSPCA recommends freezing a partly filled bottle and wrapping it in a towel. It can be left in rabbit and guinea-pig exercise areas. Inspect for leaks and chewing. For small rodents, place it outside the enclosure so a leak cannot soak the bedding or expose the animal to cold plastic.
Wrapped cold pack or bottle A towel-covered cold item can provide a cool contact point when the animal can approach and leave it freely. Do not place an uncovered frozen item directly against the body. Remove it if the covering becomes wet, damaged or heavily chewed.

How to use a ceramic tile safely

  1. Put the tile in shade, away from the water bowl and the enclosure entrance.
  2. Check for sharp edges, cracks or a surface that becomes excessively cold.
  3. Leave an ordinary dry resting area beside it.
  4. Observe whether the pet chooses it; never pin the animal against the tile or place it inside a sealed hide.

How to prepare a frozen bottle

  1. Use a sound plastic bottle and fill it only partly, leaving room for the water to expand as it freezes.
  2. Freeze it, then wrap it completely in a towel so the animal does not contact the frozen plastic directly.
  3. Place it where the pet can lean near it or move away, without narrowing an exit or tipping the enclosure.
  4. For rabbits and guinea pigs, the RSPCA says it can be left in an exercise area. For small rodents, keep it outside the enclosure and check for condensation or leaks.
  5. Replace or remove it when the towel is wet, the bottle is damaged or the animal begins chewing it.

Grooming and coat management

Regular grooming removes dead hair and helps you notice a coat that is becoming matted. The RSPCA recommends routine grooming for small pets, and Blue Cross specifically recommends regular brushing for rabbits. Extra or matted rabbit fur can also contribute to flystrike risk, so keep the rear end clean and seek veterinary advice for persistent mats rather than cutting close to the skin yourself.

Do not shave a coat solely because a forecast is hot unless a veterinarian or qualified groomer has advised it for that individual. A sudden coat change can remove natural protection and create skin problems. Focus first on shade, airflow, water and a voluntary cool surface.

How to recognize heat stress

One sign alone can be significant, particularly if it appears suddenly. Compare the pet with its normal behavior and act promptly if several signs occur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Drooling or a wet chin.
  • Eating less, refusing food or showing reduced energy.
  • Short, rapid breaths or visibly labored breathing.
  • Lying stretched out or flat on the belly in an unusual posture.
  • Sleepiness, marked lethargy, weakness, confusion or wobbliness.
  • Hot, red ears in rabbits.
  • Open-mouth breathing in rabbits.
  • Shaking, tremors, collapse, unconsciousness or fits.
  • Blood from the mouth, nose or anus, or blood in the stool in a rabbit.

Heatstroke can progress rapidly. Do not wait for a pet to become unconscious before calling. If you are unsure whether the signs are caused by heat, treat the situation as urgent and speak to a veterinarian.

What to do if heatstroke is suspected

  1. Move the pet immediately. Take it to a cool, shaded, well-ventilated room or area. Keep handling calm and support the body securely.
  2. Call a veterinarian. Tell the clinic the species, symptoms, current location and any temperature reading. Arrange transport while following the clinic’s first-aid directions.
  3. Begin cautious cooling. Use cool, not extreme, water and avoid chilling the animal. Do not immerse a rabbit in cold water and do not advise swimming as a cooling method.
  4. Offer, never force, a drink. Put water within reach if the pet is alert. Never syringe or pour water into the mouth of a weak, confused or collapsed animal.
  5. Keep checking breathing and responsiveness. Be ready to report changes to the veterinarian. Do not leave the pet unattended with a leaking bottle, loose towel or other cooling item.
  6. Travel promptly. Continue only the cooling measures your veterinarian recommends and do not delay the journey while trying to normalize the temperature at home.

Rabbit-specific cooling instructions

PDSA’s rabbit guidance advises gradually wetting the ears and body with cold tap water while avoiding the nose and mouth, offering but not forcing a drink, and placing the rabbit on a cold wet towel before going to the nearest veterinarian. Blue Cross advises dampening the fur and ears with cool water and seeking veterinary attention immediately, while warning not to submerge a rabbit in cold water.

PDSA’s general first-aid guidance also says not to cover a pet with a wet towel. Because these instructions differ in detail and the general page is written for UK pets, ask your local veterinarian which method to use for your rabbit. Do not wrap a wet towel tightly around the body, pour water over the face or attempt immersion.

Guinea pigs, hamsters and other species

The signs of heat stress can overlap across small mammals, but emergency cooling technique and safe handling vary. Move the animal to shade or a cool room, contact a veterinarian and follow species-specific instructions. Do not assume that a method suitable for a rabbit is suitable for a hamster, gerbil, bird or reptile.

A daily hot-weather check

A short routine catches failures before they become emergencies. Increase the frequency during a heatwave, after moving an enclosure or whenever the animal is recovering from illness.

  • Check the temperature at the pet’s resting level, not only on a wall or windowsill.
  • Confirm that shade still covers the enclosure at the current time of day.
  • Check ventilation and make sure a shelter is not trapping hot air.
  • Top up clean water and test bottle flow.
  • Inspect ceramic tiles, bottles, towels and fasteners for damage, leaks or chewing.
  • Look at breathing, posture, alertness, appetite and droppings.
  • Brush as appropriate for the species and remove dead or matted hair.
  • Record unusual behavior so you can describe its onset to the veterinarian.

Common mistakes to avoid

Leaving a cage in a sunny room

Sunlight can reach an enclosure after you leave, and the hottest part of the day may be hours later. Move the housing rather than relying on a temporary patch of shade.

Using a closed shelter as the only refuge

A dark box without airflow can become a heat trap. Offer a shaded shelter with ventilation and a second area that allows the pet to move away.

Relying on one frozen bottle

A bottle warms, leaks or becomes inaccessible. Treat it as one optional contact point while maintaining a cool location, airflow and multiple checks of the water supply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Putting cold items directly on skin

Cover frozen bottles and cold packs. The pet must be able to choose contact and retreat, and the covering must be checked for chewing and dampness.

Forcing water or cooling a collapsed pet at home

Forced drinking can be dangerous, and prolonged home treatment wastes time when veterinary care is needed. Call first and follow the clinic’s instructions.

Waiting for a precise temperature cutoff

Species, humidity, ventilation, age, illness and enclosure design all affect risk. The published figures are useful context, not permission to ignore rapid breathing, weakness or other warning signs.

Planning for transport and veterinary help

Keep the nearest clinic’s phone number, an out-of-hours number and a suitable carrier ready before hot weather arrives. During transport, keep the carrier shaded and ventilated, secure it so it cannot slide, and avoid leaving the animal in a parked vehicle. Tell the clinic about any cooling already attempted, water offered and changes in breathing or consciousness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your pet has a chronic disease, is very young or old, is overweight, has a dense coat or has previously suffered heat stress, ask the veterinarian for an individualized hot-weather plan. A clinic can also advise on the safest enclosure temperature and cooling method for a species not covered by the published rabbit and guinea-pig figures.

What a safe setup looks like

Before the hottest part of the day, the pet should have shade that will remain available, air that can circulate, fresh water that is actually flowing or accessible, and at least one dry resting area away from any cold aid. A ceramic tile or wrapped bottle is positioned as an optional surface, never as a restraint. The enclosure is checked again when the sun moves, and everyone who cares for the animal knows the emergency signs and the veterinarian’s number.
