To reduce tear stains safely, first make sure excess tearing is not being caused by an eye problem. If your dog has uncomplicated staining, gently wipe the fur around the eyes with a warm, wet cloth or dog eye-cleaning wipes, then dry it. Keep nearby hair trimmed, and never use peroxide or put a cleanser or drops into the eye without veterinary advice.
Why do white dogs get tear stains?
The reddish-brown color is associated with iron-containing pigments called porphyrins in tears. It shows up more clearly on white or light-colored fur. When tears spill over the eyelids instead of draining normally through the tear ducts, the damp facial hair can become stained. Eyelid shape and tear-drainage anatomy play a part; short noses, flat faces, or prominent eyes can also make overflow more likely. VCA Animal Hospitals explains tear-stain causes and anatomy.
Staining can be cosmetic, but tearing may also be a sign of a problem that needs treatment. Possible causes include irritation, allergies, conjunctivitis, infection, an eye injury, abnormal eyelashes or eyelids, a blocked tear duct, corneal ulcers, and glaucoma. Cleaning fur will not resolve the cause of excessive tearing; a veterinarian can assess whether treatment is needed. When should you take your dog to the vet?
Arrange a veterinary assessment if the staining or tearing is new, suddenly getting worse, persistent, or more pronounced than usual. Seek care as well if you notice any of these signs:

- Unusual, thick, or increased eye discharge
- Redness or swelling around the eye
- Squinting, frequent blinking, or keeping an eye closed
- Rubbing the face or pawing at the eye
These signs can indicate irritation, infection, injury, or a drainage problem. Don’t try to manage them with stain removers or treat the area as a cosmetic issue; ask your veterinarian what is causing the tearing. VCA recommends veterinary attention for new tear-staining problems, and the American Kennel Club also discusses sudden worsening and possible causes.
How to clean uncomplicated tear stains safely
If your veterinarian has ruled out a cause that needs treatment, clean only the fur around the eyes:

- Moisten a clean, soft washcloth with warm water, or use a pet-friendly eye-cleaning wipe or pad. Wipe gently around the eye; do not scrub or wipe across the eye itself.
- Use a clean towel to dry the area afterward. VCA advises: “After washing around your pet’s eyes, always dry the area with a clean towel.” Read VCA’s guidance on tear staining.
- Keep hair around the eyes trimmed so it does not hold debris or rub against the eye. If you are unsure how to trim safely, ask a groomer to do it.
- Introduce face handling gradually and keep your dog comfortable. Stop if your dog struggles or the eye looks irritated.
Eye-cleaning wipes or pads are an optional convenience for cleaning the surrounding fur. They do not treat whatever may be causing excess tears.

Do not use hydrogen peroxide near the eyes. VCA warns that peroxide-containing products can cause severe damage if they splash into an eye. Don’t put wipes, cleansers, or drops directly into the eye unless your veterinarian has directed you to do so, and ask before trying a new product. VCA’s tear-stain guidance covers peroxide and eye-area safety; its puppy tear-stain advice also cautions against using cleansers or drops in the eye without veterinary guidance.
