Keep bath water and shampoo away from your dog’s ear openings: wash around the head with a damp washcloth, direct water away from the ears, and avoid aiming a spray or pouring water toward the canals. A loose piece of cotton at the opening is optional, not waterproof protection. If an ear gets wet, dry only the parts you can see and ask your veterinarian whether an ear cleaner is appropriate.
How to bathe your dog without getting water in the ears
- Prepare first. Set out a soft washcloth and towel so you can clean and dry your dog’s head without reaching for supplies mid-bath.
- Wash around the ears. Use the washcloth on the head and around the ear flaps. Keep the head positioned so water runs away from the ear openings; do not aim a shower spray or pour water into them. Merck Veterinary Manual’s guidance for dog owners is to “Avoid getting water in the ears during bathing” (Merck Veterinary Manual).
- Dry the outside gently. When the bath is over, pat the visible outer ear dry with a towel. Do not put a swab, tissue, or other object into the canal.
This is a cautious way to apply the veterinary advice to keep water out; it is not a guarantee that no moisture will enter the ear.
Can you put cotton balls in a dog’s ears for a bath?
You may place a small, loose piece of cotton at the outer opening if it is easy to remove. Never pack it into the ear canal, and take it out as soon as bathing ends. Cotton is an optional physical aid—not a watertight seal—and the available guidance does not establish that it reliably blocks water.
What to do if water gets in your dog’s ear
Gently dry the visible outer ear with a towel. Do not try to flush the ear, insert cotton swabs, use a wax remover, or apply medication or a home remedy. Ask your veterinarian whether an ear-cleaning solution is suitable for your dog, particularly if your dog has had ear problems before. Cornell advises that healthy ears generally do not need routine cleaning unless dirt or debris is present, and that overcleaning can irritate them (Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine).

Why keeping the ear canal dry matters
Moisture that remains in the canal can contribute to bacterial or yeast overgrowth, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. Water in an ear does not, by itself, mean an infection has developed. Dogs with recurrent ear infections, allergies, floppy ears, previous ear surgery, or current symptoms may need individualized bathing and aftercare instructions from their veterinarian.
When to contact your veterinarian
Contact a veterinarian if you notice redness, persistent scratching or itching, repeated head shaking, discharge or unusually increased wax, an unusual odor, or discomfort when the ear is touched. These signs can have causes other than infection—including allergic ear disease—and an examination is needed to identify the problem. Stop cleaning if your dog shows pain.

What not to put in your dog’s ears
- Cotton swabs: Do not use them in the ear canal.
